[00:00:06.740]University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Ronnie Greene,
[00:00:08.690]to see what's been happening on campus.
[00:00:10.570]My goodness this Fall sport season is getting away from us.
[00:00:13.840]Huskers have just three games left,
[00:00:15.410]two of them at home.
[00:00:16.340]Husker Volleyball five matches left,
[00:00:18.465]three of them at home.
[00:00:19.799]This is a fun time of year now you got some basketball
[00:00:21.637]even cranked up.
[00:00:23.100]It's kind of hard to believe that basketball season
[00:00:25.480]has already kicked into gear you know and that we're
[00:00:27.440]almost to Thanksgiving and the Fall season is winding down.
[00:00:31.228]But it's here you know?
[00:00:34.301]The opportunity now with a lot of fan interest
[00:00:37.980]and basketball that's kicked off this past week.
[00:00:40.555]It'll be fun to see what Fred Hoiberg does with
[00:00:44.700]his new team and new coaching style

[00:00:50.060]And Amy now in her multiple years invested in Nebraska,
[00:00:53.242]exciting year ahead for them.
[00:00:55.914]So a lot to look forward to in this next season,
[00:00:59.929]but we got this big football with Wisconsin today.
[00:01:03.569]The other side of the field a lot of respect
[00:01:05.830]between our two institutions including that guy
[00:01:08.630]named Barry Alvarez who we all remember so well
[00:01:10.778]in Nebraska.
[00:01:12.510]So looking for to our team showing their grit today
[00:01:14.574]against a really worthy opponent.
[00:01:17.327]It's also been a big weekend for the new
[00:01:19.530]Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts.
[00:01:22.370]We've talked quite a bit about that program
[00:01:24.020]throughout the Fall,
[00:01:24.853]but for those who still aren't quite sure what it is
[00:01:26.910]tell us a little bit about the center
[00:01:28.150]and what does this dedication that we had
[00:01:30.010]this week mean for this?
[00:01:31.450]Well the Johnny Carson Center for the Emerging Arts
[00:01:34.280]we have talked about it a lot this Fall because
[00:01:36.350]it officially opened in August.
[00:01:38.500]This is it's first full semester and in the University.
[00:01:42.060]It's been underway and underdevelopment for about
[00:01:45.080]five years from when the official gift was announced
[00:01:49.003]by the Johnny Carson foundation.
[00:01:51.880]I think many Nebraskans know Johnny Carson
[00:01:54.500]was a Nebraska alum.
[00:01:56.120]Grew up in Norfolk, Nebraska.
[00:01:58.200]Was very fond of his alma mater and the institution
[00:02:02.171]here at the University of Nebraska
[00:02:03.004]where he graduated in 1949.
[00:02:05.500]And that foundation invested five years ago in standing up
[00:02:10.062]this Johnny Carson Center for the Emerging Media Arts,
[00:02:13.218]been working on it every since and excited to dedicate
[00:02:16.810]the facility and to dedicate the program.
[00:02:19.081]Actually tomorrow will be the official dedication.
[00:02:23.371]In it's formation under the leadership of Megan Elliott,
[00:02:26.880]the director of the center,
[00:02:28.150]who we hired a couple of years ago has hit the ground
[00:02:30.870]running with great programming and development.
[00:02:34.637]They just earned recently a Hewlett Packard Educause
[00:02:38.225]Campus of the Future designation.
[00:02:39.369]The first program in the Big 10 to receive
[00:02:40.202]that designation by a Fortune hundred global cooperation.
[00:02:48.002]That allows us to receive the highest tech equipment
[00:02:51.720]to use in the new center.
[00:02:54.239]With the likes of other Educause members like MIT,
[00:02:58.434]and Yale and Dartmouth,
[00:03:01.170]puts us in pretty fine company we think as part of
[00:03:03.840]this new designation.
[00:03:06.400]I mentioned this has been five years in the making,
[00:03:08.860]it also has had a lot of advice in that process.
[00:03:12.510]Part of the formal dedication activities this weekend
[00:03:16.090]we gathered some of the leading experts in the field,
[00:03:19.800]from technology based industries for a discussion
[00:03:23.450]about how the Carson Center can address workforce
[00:03:26.120]needs for this new digital economy that we're in.
[00:03:30.020]All of the participants in this think tank serve on the
[00:03:33.700]Carson Center's advisory council.
[00:03:35.850]I know I think we talked earlier in the season
[00:03:37.830]about what an impressive group of leaders from
[00:03:40.280]around the world have been assembled into that group.
[00:03:43.240]So really exciting with the members of their board
[00:03:47.050]here this weekend they're here with us today for the game.
[00:03:49.840]They've become big Husker fans even though
[00:03:51.630]they're from Southern California.
[00:03:53.345]And to be able to see this now come to the reality
[00:03:56.466]with our first 33 students in the new
[00:03:59.420]Johnny Carson Center for the Emerging Media Arts.
[00:04:01.930]What a wonderful part addition to the University as well.
[00:04:05.030]Well we talk a lot about land grant universities
[00:04:08.080]and what a big component research is.
[00:04:10.610]Last week was an especially big week on campus
[00:04:13.460]with research focused events.
[00:04:15.200]What can you tell us about research days?
[00:04:18.050]Well Greg we are a land grant university that has
[00:04:22.370]as one of our primary missions research and innovation
[00:04:25.660]and creative activity that leads to better quality of life.
[00:04:29.403]This has been a great year for us this past year,
[00:04:33.170]a record setting year for our research programs
[00:04:37.025]across the university.
[00:04:38.620]Where we broke all of our records
[00:04:40.590]for research expenditures,
[00:04:42.190]for sponsored research that comes to the university
[00:04:45.040]to support that research.
[00:04:46.270]A fourteen percent increase over our previous year.
[00:04:48.993]We're 320 million dollars in research expenditures
[00:04:53.460]across the university.
[00:04:54.860]In everything from areas where we lead like
[00:04:57.280]agriculture natural resources,
[00:04:59.010]water and food security to the life sciences
[00:05:01.074]to the social and behavioral sciences research areas
[00:05:04.780]to brain biology and behavior to early childhood education,
[00:05:08.440]to physics and nano science and material science,
[00:05:10.526]engineering sciences,
[00:05:12.930]kind of across the landscape.
[00:05:14.860]And every year we take pause and we have a research week.
[00:05:19.750]A research fair so to speak.
[00:05:22.130]That was last week on campus.
[00:05:24.250]The last game that we were together where the campus
[00:05:27.556]community celebrated the research accomplishments
[00:05:31.770]of our faculty and scholars across the campus
[00:05:34.860]through that research week.
[00:05:37.410]It celebrated innovation in US patents
[00:05:40.180]that our faculty have received through our
[00:05:42.500]innovator recognition ceremony during that week.
[00:05:45.928]One of the most engaging events every year of research fair
[00:05:49.950]is the Science Slam where our post doctoral research
[00:05:53.690]fellows deliver informal five minute kind of elevator
[00:05:56.650]pitches about their work.
[00:05:58.526]And awards are given to those that do that the best.
[00:06:02.310]This year for the second year in a row we had
[00:06:05.990]a faculty connector slam activity that's similar
[00:06:09.890]for our researchers not just the post doctoral fellows,
[00:06:12.470]but now our researchers and scholars to deliver fun
[00:06:15.040]and engaging talks as well.
[00:06:17.300]So big week in recognizing research and the impact
[00:06:20.578]of that research across our world leading faculty,
[00:06:23.650]across so many different disciplines.

[00:06:29.230]that leads to patents.
[00:06:30.340]Recent news about a new program at UNL to
[00:06:33.160]encourage even more faculty, staff, and student
[00:06:35.260]to think like entrepreneurs.
[00:06:37.260]What can you tell us about that?
[00:06:38.720]Well Greg we do have a new program at UNL
[00:06:41.750]that just started this year.
[00:06:43.650]It's called Nebraska's Introduction to Customer Discovery.
[00:06:46.800]It's part of our work within you tech ventures,
[00:06:49.570]which is our commercial transfer kind of commercialization
[00:06:53.240]arm of the university that takes research and turns it
[00:06:56.949]into a commercial product.
[00:06:57.901]And we launces this Fall with 19 teams representing
[00:07:02.775]different departments across the campus.
[00:07:05.000]This new kind of introduction to customer discovery.
[00:07:08.060]And what it does is provides an opportunity for
[00:07:11.260]aspiring entrepreneurs who are in our faculty to
[00:07:14.360]gain new perspective on the commercialization
[00:07:17.230]of the research that they're doing.
[00:07:19.090]Kind of a commercialization boot camp if you want
[00:07:22.480]to think of it as that.
[00:07:25.624]Included opportunites for them weekly to be working
[00:07:28.160]within new tech ventures,
[00:07:29.530]with the Nebraska Center for Entrepreneurship
[00:07:31.770]and our College of Business.
[00:07:33.400]With Invest Nebraska which is an angel investment group
[00:07:37.060]that invests in new commercialization ventures
[00:07:39.401]as well as the Nebraska Business Development Center
[00:07:42.714]at the university.
[00:07:44.440]So exciting to kind of see this new program
[00:07:47.260]with these first 19 teams going through this introduction
[00:07:50.570]to customer discovery for commercialization of
[00:07:52.920]research for the university as well.
