- [00:00:00.000]Today's Horse World, many horse owners choose
- [00:00:02.620]to vaccinate their horses themselves,
- [00:00:04.810]which is perfectly fine but it's very important
- [00:00:07.120]that you understand what you're gonna give,
- [00:00:09.600]when it needs to be given,
- [00:00:11.310]the location that it needs to be given
- [00:00:13.220]and if consulted with your veterinarian
- [00:00:14.760]and make sure you do everything correctly.
- [00:00:16.840]So, most of our vaccinations are either going to be given
- [00:00:20.260]in the horse's neck or in their nostril
- [00:00:22.300]and it's absolutely critical that you know
- [00:00:23.980]the right method of administration.
- [00:00:26.150]So, if we're gonna give it a vaccine in the neck,
- [00:00:28.400]generally what we wanna do is make sure
- [00:00:30.410]that you don't make the horse's neck sore.
- [00:00:32.460]So, what you wanna do is draw an imaginary line
- [00:00:34.550]in front of their shoulder, down here and through here,
- [00:00:38.720]and you're gonna go to a spot
- [00:00:39.820]right in the center of the horse's neck.
- [00:00:42.140]Now, the method that I have used a lot
- [00:00:44.340]that works fairly well for me
- [00:00:46.040]is that I pinch the horse's neck here,
- [00:00:48.250]I'll lay the needle on the side of it,
- [00:00:50.650]pull it up so I'm at a 90 degree angle,
- [00:00:52.767]put the needle into the horse's neck,
- [00:00:55.770]pull back the plunger just a little bit
- [00:00:57.590]to make sure that I don't have any blood,
- [00:00:59.470]and then go ahead and depress
- [00:01:00.800]and push the vaccine into the horse's neck.
- [00:01:03.400]Then I'll pull the needle out and go ahead
- [00:01:06.250]and then just rub the horse's neck just a little bit.
- [00:01:09.550]The other method of administration for some vaccines
- [00:01:11.760]for horses now is to give it intra nasally.
- [00:01:14.430]Most of your strangles vaccines are given that way
- [00:01:16.670]and some influenza vaccines are given intra nasally.
- [00:01:19.520]So, basically, the medication's
- [00:01:21.350]gonna be pulled up in this syringe
- [00:01:22.740]and then you have the soft little catheter
- [00:01:24.480]that just slides into the horse's nostril.
- [00:01:26.680]So, basically, after you have this all put together,
- [00:01:29.050]you'll come to the horse
- [00:01:30.520]and we'll just slide it into her nose
- [00:01:32.560]as so and depress the plunger.
