- [00:00:01.820]So now we're gonna talk about
- [00:00:02.890]taking the temperature of a horse.
- [00:00:04.410]The horse's normal temperature at rest if he's healthy
- [00:00:06.640]should be right around 100 degrees fahrenheit.
- [00:00:09.280]Different things can elevate their temperature.
- [00:00:10.928]Naturally, the first one is gonna be if they're sick.
- [00:00:13.650]And if their temperature gets to be 103, 104, 105,
- [00:00:17.520]you really should start to become somewhat concerned.
- [00:00:20.680]Hot weather, a lot of work,
- [00:00:22.280]those things can also elevate their temperature,
- [00:00:24.220]but it's really not gonna be much more than
- [00:00:25.740]a 101, maybe up to 102.
- [00:00:28.530]So what's a safe way to take a horse's temperature?
- [00:00:30.840]Well, first you're gonna stand as I am here
- [00:00:33.250]with my shoulder facing the horse's hip.
- [00:00:35.510]Next, I'm going to lubricate my thermometer
- [00:00:38.500]and the simplest thing that most people in the industry do
- [00:00:40.770]is just use a little bit of saliva.
- [00:00:42.551]So, I'll put some saliva on my hand
- [00:00:44.930]and just rub the thermometer into that.
- [00:00:48.140]Then we'll take the horse's tail
- [00:00:49.900]and pull it over to me
- [00:00:51.490]and I'll go up here
- [00:00:53.070]and in the rectum
- [00:00:54.550]go ahead and just gently move
- [00:00:56.700]and place that thermometer in the horse's rectum.
- [00:00:59.380]I'll hold it there until it beeps
- [00:01:02.000]and then that let's me know that it's reached temperature.
- [00:01:04.210]And as I pull it out, okay,
- [00:01:06.600]we'll go ahead and wipe it off from the tail head
- [00:01:09.360]and read what their temperature is.
