- [00:00:00.000]So, now we're talking about
- [00:00:01.130]how to take a horses heart rate.
- [00:00:02.980]The normal heart rate for a resting horse
- [00:00:04.830]should be somewhere between 30
- [00:00:05.897]and 40 beats per minute.
- [00:00:07.630]You can actually only take it for 15 seconds
- [00:00:09.600]and then multiply that number times four
- [00:00:11.770]to get your heart rate for the minute.
- [00:00:14.100]Now, there's a variety of different things
- [00:00:15.420]that can elevate a horses heart rate such as;
- [00:00:17.840]if he's in any kind of pain that will elevate it,
- [00:00:20.720]any time you work him,
- [00:00:21.720]get him excited,
- [00:00:22.553]and those types of things,
- [00:00:23.620]and also if the horse potentially is some kind of sickness.
- [00:00:27.180]Now, where can you take the horses heart rate?
- [00:00:29.470]If you happen to have a stethoscope,
- [00:00:31.360]you can take that actually sternally
- [00:00:33.770]down in this location here.
- [00:00:35.730]All right.
- [00:00:37.920]Be aware
- [00:00:38.900]that the heart is very deep in the horses body cavity,
- [00:00:42.430]so it's gonna be,
- [00:00:43.580]unless you have really high quality stethoscope,
- [00:00:45.660]it's gonna be fairly subtle,
- [00:00:47.300]fairly deep sounding,
- [00:00:48.210]but just a very subtle lub-dub, lub-dub.
- [00:00:50.840]If you don't have a stethoscope,
- [00:00:51.880]the other places you can take their heart rate
- [00:00:53.750]are here, underneath the jaw,
- [00:00:55.970]you can feel with the veins there,
- [00:00:57.790]or you can also come down here
- [00:01:00.070]into the horses fetlock
- [00:01:01.370]and feel it there,
- [00:01:02.620]to the inside of his fetlock.
