- [00:00:00.488](upbeat music)
- [00:00:02.180]I'm Richard Moberly.
- [00:00:03.340]I'm the Interim Executive Vice Chancellor
- [00:00:05.230]and normally I'm the dean of the law school.
- [00:00:07.260]I'm excited about the Peace and Civility Week
- [00:00:09.330]'cause those are topics that are really important to me.
- [00:00:14.190]With 30,000 students, faculty and staff on campus,
- [00:00:17.330]it's inevitable that we won't all agree.
- [00:00:20.200]And in fact, the First Amendment will protect us
- [00:00:22.730]when we voice those disagreements.
- [00:00:24.620]So it's not really whether we disagree;
- [00:00:26.460]what matters is how we disagree with each other.
- [00:00:29.680]We need to figure out how to maintain relationships
- [00:00:32.440]even when we disagree,
- [00:00:34.190]so if we can approach those with whom we disagree
- [00:00:36.780]with a sense of humility
- [00:00:38.340]and if we can disagree respectfully,
- [00:00:40.730]we may even learn something ourselves.
- [00:00:44.450]I think the number one way
- [00:00:45.540]is to demonstrate civility through respect,
- [00:00:48.320]respect for other people and respect for their opinions.
- [00:00:51.430]I always try and remember and try and encourage
- [00:00:53.720]everyone I work with to simply assume good faith.
- [00:00:57.370]When we're put off my someone else's statement or an email,
- [00:01:01.050]is there a way to interpret someone's words and actions
- [00:01:04.240]from a place of understanding?
- [00:01:06.040]Asking questions and listening graciously
- [00:01:08.350]rather than making statements
- [00:01:10.000]is a great way to develop that understanding.
- [00:01:14.250]There are many ways that students, faculty and staff
- [00:01:16.560]can be involved in promoting peace and civility on campus.
- [00:01:20.710]There are opportunities for leadership development,
- [00:01:22.640]workshops for professionals and students,
- [00:01:25.520]there's a panel discussion
- [00:01:26.740]with several of our state senators.
- [00:01:29.230]And beyond this week, there are other opportunities
- [00:01:31.250]on campus that encourage civil interaction and dialogue.
- [00:01:35.090]Oasis hosts a weekly Dish It Up! event
- [00:01:38.330]where it's a safe space to discuss current events
- [00:01:40.780]here and around the world.
- [00:01:42.780]Mondays and Thursdays, Student Involvement hosts
- [00:01:45.360]Coffee Talks for international and domestic students
- [00:01:48.110]to talk about differences in their culture.
- [00:01:51.130]If you can't find an opportunity that suits you,
- [00:01:53.080]create your own event.
- [00:01:55.800]From my perspective as Dean of the College of Law,
- [00:01:58.510]students at the law school are trained
- [00:02:00.420]in civil discourse and productive disagreement.
- [00:02:03.470]We believe lawyers should be equipped to facilitate dialogue
- [00:02:06.280]and find common ground,
- [00:02:07.850]and at the College of Law,
- [00:02:09.070]our students discuss important current legal issues
- [00:02:11.760]and we expect them to do that
- [00:02:13.070]in a respectful and thoughtful manner
- [00:02:15.150]because that's essential
- [00:02:16.870]to getting things done in the world.
- [00:02:19.550]Our society's gonna always have disagreements,
- [00:02:22.300]but the way for us to solve real problems
- [00:02:24.840]that are facing us as a society
- [00:02:27.270]is to come together and think about solutions.
- [00:02:29.620]So if we can figure out how to disagree
- [00:02:32.010]in a way that furthers the conversation,
- [00:02:34.140]I think we'll make real progress.
