- [00:00:00.110]Hi everyone.
- [00:00:01.020]My name's Rachel Ayalon,
- [00:00:02.520]I'm an International Student Success Navigator here at UNL.
- [00:00:05.930]Hello everybody,
- [00:00:07.050]I'm Naisargee Patel.
- [00:00:08.710]Today we are going to take a tour around campus
- [00:00:11.700]and we're going to see where students
- [00:00:13.210]live, learn and eat at UNL.
- [00:00:15.725](upbeat music)
- [00:00:18.610]What made you decide to come to UNL?
- [00:00:21.080]Great scholarship opportunities,
- [00:00:23.210]and I always wanted to do research,
- [00:00:25.770]and UNL offers ample opportunities
- [00:00:28.920]to undergrad to do research.
- [00:00:31.590]A lot of international students that I've met with
- [00:00:34.290]they tell me that one of their favorite things
- [00:00:36.440]about living on campus is they get paired sometimes
- [00:00:39.390]with domestic students, or other international students,
- [00:00:42.630]and it kinda makes them feel more connected
- [00:00:45.160]to campus right away.
- [00:00:46.560]What has been your experience with that?
- [00:00:48.470]When you're paired up with domestic students
- [00:00:50.550]you are actually bridging that gap
- [00:00:52.630]from being an international student,
- [00:00:54.950]and you are trying to engage with the American culture,
- [00:00:58.910]so definitely yes.
- [00:01:00.144](upbeat music)
- [00:01:01.970]Hey Rachel, so you talk about that you are
- [00:01:04.460]an international student at Gator here in UNL.
- [00:01:07.270]Can you talk more about that?
- [00:01:08.770]Like, how can you help international students
- [00:01:11.250]to become successful?
- [00:01:12.540]That's a great question.
- [00:01:13.920]So my role here at UNL is to design cultural
- [00:01:16.970]and co-curricular programs.
- [00:01:19.360]So for example, the first week that students
- [00:01:21.930]are on campus we offer a lunch and learn session
- [00:01:24.750]where we talk about an introduction
- [00:01:26.830]to the United States higher ED system.
- [00:01:29.470]So kind of gives international students a little taste
- [00:01:32.640]of what to expect for their first year.
- [00:01:34.740]On top of that we offer cultural programming.
- [00:01:37.520]So we'll take students to the zoo.
- [00:01:40.250]We do a welcome ice cream social
- [00:01:42.920]at the very beginning as well.
- [00:01:44.620]We have a website that lists all of our upcoming events.
- [00:01:50.210]Lincoln is one of the top safest cities
- [00:01:52.710]in the United States, so can you talk about your experience
- [00:01:56.130]with that, and what have you felt being on campus?
- [00:01:59.770]I think Lincoln is indeed
- [00:02:02.000]really one of the safest place I have ever been to.
- [00:02:05.590]I am a person who studies late in libraries and stuff,
- [00:02:10.270]so I have walked alone at one thirty am.
- [00:02:13.860]I never felt unsafe about it,
- [00:02:15.640]and if you are not even comfortable to walk alone
- [00:02:18.430]we have police around who can drop you to your home.
- [00:02:21.330]So it's super super safe and super super nice.
- [00:02:25.340]So you've been in Lincoln now for a couple of years.
- [00:02:28.640]Tell me, what are the things you like to do in Lincoln?
- [00:02:31.220]I like to read,
- [00:02:32.620]and UNL has really really great library stuff.
- [00:02:36.770]I like dancing and we have gym.
- [00:02:39.460]We have recreation center, which is really really cool.
- [00:02:42.160]You should check it out for sure.
- [00:02:44.100]And then, the downtown.
- [00:02:45.870]One good thing about this UNL city campus
- [00:02:48.670]is downtown is just five to 10 minutes walk.
- [00:02:52.510]So whenever I'm free, and when I feel like I want
- [00:02:55.370]to have some, let's say, Mexican food or American food,
- [00:02:58.660]I just always walk to downtown and have some great food.
- [00:03:03.342]So what have been your favorite classes,
- [00:03:05.820]or favorite professors that you've connected with?
- [00:03:08.080]I love chemistry and I would just like to tell you
- [00:03:10.490]that I'm a TA this semester for Gen Chem, Chem 109.
- [00:03:15.010]So all the students who have to take
- [00:03:17.130]the introductory class of chemistry, they're my students.
- [00:03:21.070]So I'm super excited to be TA.
- [00:03:22.940]And even the chemistry department,
- [00:03:24.630]we do have resource center where you can come up
- [00:03:27.660]with your assignments, so that's also good resource to do.
- [00:03:30.335](upbeat music)
- [00:03:33.030]What other resources are there for international students
- [00:03:36.040]to succeed academically?
- [00:03:37.443]A student who needs help can come in here
- [00:03:39.680]and find resources like other TA's,
- [00:03:42.130]which here's one of my TA's right here.
- [00:03:44.670]He TA's Chem 251 for me this semester.
- [00:03:48.970]He schedules office hours.
- [00:03:50.420]I make myself present on a weekly basis in here,
- [00:03:53.890]two to three days a week, couple hours a day.
- [00:03:56.660]If that doesn't work then I try to encourage students
- [00:03:58.910]to email me and interact that way
- [00:04:00.730]to set up a time that is suitable for the both of us.
- [00:04:05.660]That way it doesn't have to be so formal.
- [00:04:07.550]Thank you all so much for riding around with us on campus.
- [00:04:10.250]We hope this was helpful.
- [00:04:11.600]If you have any questions please contact us.
- [00:04:13.540]See ya.
- [00:04:15.065](upbeat music)
