- [00:00:01.270]Welcome back, Countdown to Kickoff here
- [00:00:02.740]on the Husker Sports Network,
- [00:00:03.890]and as we do each and every week,
- [00:00:04.930]a chance to sit down with the chancellor
- [00:00:05.946]from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:08.350]We haven't done this for two weeks,
- [00:00:10.020]because of a rare bye week.
- [00:00:11.750]We didn't have one of these a year ago.
- [00:00:13.570]Were you able to push back and enjoy yourself last week?
- [00:00:16.320]What?
- [00:00:17.300](laughs)
- [00:00:18.133]No.
- [00:00:19.071]The bye week was great,
- [00:00:20.130]and I know the team enjoyed having that bye week to recover.
- [00:00:23.820]But a lot going on on campus,
- [00:00:26.298]and a lot happening at the university, of course.
- [00:00:29.210]And a lot this week, indeed.
- [00:00:31.510]Monday and Tuesday were Fall Break.
- [00:00:33.100]I really enjoyed your tweet to the students:
- [00:00:35.010]Enjoy yourself, refresh,
- [00:00:36.490]and be ready to come back and get after it.
- [00:00:38.180]To get a rompin' stompin' Fall
- [00:00:39.680]and get done with great success.
- [00:00:41.200]So the students did have a couple of days off.
- [00:00:43.520]And they needed that refresher
- [00:00:45.040]in the middle of the semester, as well.
- [00:00:46.490]Now they're back on the run to the holidays.
- [00:00:49.580]Will be here before we know it.
- [00:00:52.320]Yesterday was a Board of Regents meeting,
- [00:00:54.170]and I love when you bring guests on to your show.
- [00:00:56.670]And there was a major announcement yesterday,
- [00:00:58.700]as the Regents approved a priority candidate
- [00:01:01.120]for the next president of the University of Nebraska.
- [00:01:03.350]Your thoughts about this and this process?
- [00:01:05.740]Well, you know,
- [00:01:06.780]I think many of our Nebraska listeners are well aware
- [00:01:09.851]that a couple of years ago
- [00:01:13.030]we instituted a new policy
- [00:01:15.540]for hiring senior leadership
- [00:01:17.090]across the University of Nebraska,
- [00:01:18.740]which includes the president of the system,
- [00:01:20.870]includes the chancellors of the campuses.
- [00:01:23.700]And we were very, very happy yesterday
- [00:01:27.410]to be introduced
- [00:01:29.610]to the priority candidate to become the eighth president
- [00:01:32.580]of the University of Nebraska system
- [00:01:34.850]through the process that the state has been following
- [00:01:38.130]carefully these last number of months
- [00:01:40.183]in the search for that next president.
- [00:01:43.340]And he was introduced yesterday,
- [00:01:45.520]got on a plane,
- [00:01:46.840]came here after the vote of the Board
- [00:01:49.840]to make him the priority candidate,
- [00:01:51.350]and we got the chance to meet him
- [00:01:52.550]for the first time yesterday
- [00:01:54.010]and are very excited about Ted Carter
- [00:01:56.490]as the priority candidate
- [00:01:57.720]for the eighth president of the University of Nebraska.
- [00:02:00.710]Fantastic.
- [00:02:01.543]Ted, welcome first to Nebraska, and Lincoln.
- [00:02:05.430]Your thoughts?
- [00:02:06.263]What's going through your mind right now?
- [00:02:08.150]A lot of excitement.
- [00:02:10.170]Lynda and I are just overwhelmed by the welcome
- [00:02:13.220]that we have received.
- [00:02:14.950]Coming here yesterday was the first time
- [00:02:17.470]we'd ever stepped foot in Lincoln.
- [00:02:19.480]I'd had the opportunity to visit the state of Nebraska
- [00:02:21.960]a few times in my career,
- [00:02:23.170]but to have this opportunity to be able to compete,
- [00:02:27.210]and then to have the backing of the search committee,
- [00:02:30.250]the Board of Regents,
- [00:02:31.238]and then to be introduced to so many people yesterday.
- [00:02:34.250]And, of course,
- [00:02:35.083]the opportunity to be in Memorial Stadium
- [00:02:37.920]to see the Big Red do what they do.
- [00:02:40.970]It's just super exciting.
- [00:02:43.280]Why was this something that made sense for you
- [00:02:45.380]and something that was attractive to you?
- [00:02:47.780]Well, Lynda and I have been married for 37 years,
- [00:02:51.610]38 years in the Navy.
- [00:02:52.760]We've lived really all over the world,
- [00:02:54.840]all over the country supporting the citizens of our country.
- [00:02:59.070]So we've always made a home wherever we are.
- [00:03:02.970]And the last six years of my career
- [00:03:05.130]was involved in leading higher education.
- [00:03:07.340]One up in Newport at the U.S. Naval War College,
- [00:03:09.500]and then five years at the U.S. Naval Academy.
- [00:03:12.430]And for both of us,
- [00:03:13.360]it was the highest calling we'd ever had.
- [00:03:15.622]And then to step out of uniform,
- [00:03:18.860]begin to think about what my next chapter in life
- [00:03:21.770]would be as a 60 year old,
- [00:03:23.820]we thought we probably would not necessarily be involved
- [00:03:26.470]in higher education.
- [00:03:28.160]But this opportunity came up,
- [00:03:29.460]the search committee found me,
- [00:03:30.750]asked me what I thought,
- [00:03:31.710]and when I saw the leadership pillars
- [00:03:33.380]that the search committee had put together
- [00:03:35.840]for what they were looking for in a system president,
- [00:03:38.640]I was very excited.
- [00:03:39.940]I thought I might be a fit.
- [00:03:41.340]And we were off to a reasonable start.
- [00:03:45.020]You were the Superintendent at the U.S. Naval Academy,
- [00:03:47.410]that's your most recent role.
- [00:03:48.830]For our audience, just describe a little bit
- [00:03:51.020]what that was about.
- [00:03:52.640]So it's similar to a college or university president.
- [00:03:55.960]I lived on campus,
- [00:03:57.230]we lived on campus.
- [00:03:59.130]We were in charge of every aspect of the institution.
- [00:04:02.870]Federally funded, but not completely.
- [00:04:05.330]So we did have some fundraising elements
- [00:04:07.300]to get us what we called Margin of Excellence Programs.
- [00:04:11.050]But 4,400 students.
- [00:04:13.830]Faculty and staff, total about 1,600.
- [00:04:17.120]25 academic programs.
- [00:04:18.560]33 Division I sports programs.
- [00:04:22.300]And we had oversight over that.
- [00:04:24.190]Complete budgeting, installation,
- [00:04:26.000]a historical campus of 338 acres,
- [00:04:30.567]and a lot of attention being only 33 miles
- [00:04:33.100]from Washington, D.C.
- [00:04:35.260]But we lived under a glaring spotlight
- [00:04:37.780]for that five-year stint,
- [00:04:39.090]and nobody really necessarily enjoys that.
- [00:04:42.410]We found ourselves able to navigate in that space
- [00:04:45.850]and do well,
- [00:04:47.120]And we enjoyed our time there.
- [00:04:48.410]It's where Lynda and I had met when were dating in 1979.
- [00:04:52.070]She was at University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
- [00:04:54.710]I was a sophomore.
- [00:04:56.220]So we had started our personal relationship
- [00:04:58.730]there 40 years ago,
- [00:04:59.800]and then to go back there some 36 years later,
- [00:05:04.710]or 33 years later,
- [00:05:06.180]and we just celebrated our 37th wedding anniversary.
- [00:05:08.920]That made that that much more special.
- [00:05:11.380]I know there's a 30-day period that now starts.
- [00:05:13.870]What's the plan?
- [00:05:14.890]What will you be doing over those 30 days?
- [00:05:18.200]So you know, I played ice hockey at Navy for four years,
- [00:05:20.740]and I had a very influential hockey coach.
- [00:05:22.610]And he used to say to us,
- [00:05:23.537]"Gentlemen, talk is cheap.
- [00:05:26.450]"It's what you do."
- [00:05:28.240]So I think in this period,
- [00:05:30.221]it's an important time for me to be a good listener
- [00:05:33.600]and hear what people are concerned about.
- [00:05:36.150]What are their issues?
- [00:05:37.403]Where are their resource challenges?
- [00:05:40.010]Let them get a chance to know me.
- [00:05:42.310]And then if they see,
- [00:05:44.230]and I'm a good fit to the Board of Regents
- [00:05:46.030]and they vote me in,
- [00:05:47.950]then it'll be time for me to come in and get to work.
- [00:05:51.070]Very good.
- [00:05:51.903]You've talked about getting out of uniform.
- [00:05:53.310]You are wearing a red jacket today.
- [00:05:54.710]I will say it looks pretty good on you.
- [00:05:56.910]I have to admit,
- [00:05:57.790]I have not worn a red jacket ever in my life.
- [00:06:00.928]This was something that was given to me to wear today,
- [00:06:04.580]and when we put it on, even Lynda said,
- [00:06:07.407]"That fits too well."
- [00:06:08.520]So I know it's a little bold,
- [00:06:10.150]but I think being in Memorial Stadium it'll feel at home.
- [00:06:14.040]Speaking of Memorial Stadium,
- [00:06:15.070]today we're gonna celebrate Veterans Day.
- [00:06:17.030]It's a few weeks away,
- [00:06:17.863]but we don't have a home game for a while.
- [00:06:19.040]I think you're gonna enjoy the ceremonies today.
- [00:06:21.890]It's one of my favorite games of the year
- [00:06:23.220]when we get a chance to see this happen.
- [00:06:24.610]It sure is.
- [00:06:25.470]And if you remember back to a year ago
- [00:06:27.310]when we were celebrating the hundredth anniversary
- [00:06:29.430]of Armistice Day
- [00:06:30.263]and the stadium here was actually built
- [00:06:33.120]in honor of World War I.
- [00:06:34.730]Called Memorial Stadium for that reason,
- [00:06:36.960]dedicated in 1923.
- [00:06:39.062]So honoring our veterans,
- [00:06:41.940]honoring those that protect our freedoms,
- [00:06:45.050]it's a very special day at Memorial Stadium in that way.
- [00:06:47.830]You know, and I've gotta comment.
- [00:06:49.800]Ted got the color red right, too.
- [00:06:51.670]It's not just red.
- [00:06:52.610]It's the right red.
- [00:06:54.130]So, good to see you.
- [00:06:55.664]Very good to see you.
- [00:06:56.910]Ted, great to see you.
- [00:06:57.743]Congratulations on this.
- [00:06:59.010]Have a great 30-day period,
- [00:07:00.470]and enjoy the game today.
- [00:07:01.770]Thank you so much.
- [00:07:03.077]Go Big Red!
- [00:07:04.360]He's got that down too.
- [00:07:05.270]Chancellor, always great to see you.
- [00:07:06.220]We'll see you in Purdue next week.
- [00:07:07.550]Go Big Red.
- [00:07:08.383]Ronnie Green with us here on Countdown to Kickoff.
- [00:07:10.700]Matt Coatney's back with our Big Ten Blitz, next.
