- [00:00:00.437](upbeat music)
- [00:00:02.390]Welcome back, everybody, to Husker Volleyball.
- [00:00:04.440]Let's take a short break from the action tonight
- [00:00:07.000]and visit with the Chancellor of
- [00:00:09.160]the University of Nebraska Lincoln, Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:11.090]Chancellor, how are you?
- [00:00:12.170]I'm doing great, John.
- [00:00:13.190]How are you?
- [00:00:14.340]Doing well, in part because of
- [00:00:15.690]this fabulous facility here.
- [00:00:17.160]Some say it's the preeminent volleyball facility
- [00:00:19.157]in the world.
- [00:00:20.450]How important is the Devaney Center to Nebraska volleyball?
- [00:00:22.982]Well, you know, the Devaney Center, of course,
- [00:00:25.360]has its own vaunted history, if you will.
- [00:00:28.370]It's the home to our basketball team for a long time.
- [00:00:31.410]And when PBA was opened, and we were able to convert
- [00:00:35.400]Devaney into a volleyball standalone facility,
- [00:00:38.270]unlike any other in the country,
- [00:00:39.970]and, as you say, maybe the world in that respect.
- [00:00:43.200]Um, over 8,000 fans in this place, match in and match out,
- [00:00:48.877]so it's just a very special facility
- [00:00:51.810]to be able to compete in at the highest levels
- [00:00:54.030]like our volleyball team does, year in and year out.
- [00:00:57.500]And added to that, the Hendrix facility for basketball,
- [00:01:01.770]the training facility that was added to Devaney
- [00:01:03.605]a few years ago, our indoor track facilities,
- [00:01:06.406]our swimming and diving facilities,
- [00:01:09.120]our gymnastics facilities, wrestling, of course,
- [00:01:11.548]is homed in Devaney.
- [00:01:13.740]And then we're adding, as our fans would see,
- [00:01:16.710]a new gymnastics training facility on the north side
- [00:01:19.680]of Devaney that'll be open, here,
- [00:01:21.360]in just a couple of months, um, in January,
- [00:01:24.250]for both our women's and men's teams.
- [00:01:26.350]Excited about that new development.
- [00:01:28.640]So, facilities are a big, big part of who we are,
- [00:01:32.320]um, and we're very blessed to have some of
- [00:01:34.247]the very best in the world here in Nebraska.
- [00:01:36.870]And some other big announcements of late
- [00:01:39.370]regarding new facilities.
- [00:01:40.610]You and the athletic director, Bill Moos,
- [00:01:42.100]the head football coach, Scott Frost,
- [00:01:43.730]had a big announcement about
- [00:01:44.680]the new Nebraska football facility
- [00:01:47.190]that will be built out right near the old Coliseum.
- [00:01:49.730]And maybe even a bigger announcement,
- [00:01:51.890]the expansion of Nebraska Engineering.
- [00:01:53.820]Tell us more about these two special projects.
- [00:01:55.920]Well, J.B., you know, we're kind of living
- [00:01:59.380]in a really special time in the university's history,
- [00:02:02.070]and as we talked about a couple of weeks ago now,
- [00:02:05.150]when we made that announcement about
- [00:02:06.990]the athletics expansion, the new football training facility,
- [00:02:10.130]and a support facility for all of our student athletes,
- [00:02:14.750]I can't find a time in our 150-year history
- [00:02:18.200]of the institution when we were looking at the level
- [00:02:21.220]of investment in the future of the university
- [00:02:24.700]that we're seeing out ahead of us,
- [00:02:26.710]so if you take from this fall,
- [00:02:29.630]when we opened the new Carson Center
- [00:02:31.330]for the Emerging Media Arts
- [00:02:32.780]in the former Nebraska Bookstore building
- [00:02:35.060]that's now up and operating,
- [00:02:36.464]forward through to when these facilities
- [00:02:39.530]will be completed in 2022, 2023,
- [00:02:43.105]525 million dollars in investment
- [00:02:47.300]in academic
- [00:02:48.380]and athletic facilities here at UNL.
- [00:02:50.850]That's very, very exciting, obviously,
- [00:02:53.250]building on our new business building
- [00:02:55.490]we opened a few years ago.
- [00:02:57.246]We have a new Education and Human Sciences facility
- [00:03:01.130]that will be rebuilt over the next two years,
- [00:03:03.820]and a new Mabel Lee Hall, 46 million dollar project.
- [00:03:07.560]Uh, significant expansion of our engineering college,
- [00:03:10.950]uh, that we also announced just a few weeks ago.
- [00:03:14.220]Um, 75 million dollar rebuild
- [00:03:16.600]of the Scott Engineering Center on city campus
- [00:03:20.128]for research facilities in our College of Engineering,
- [00:03:24.060]and a new 85 million dollar Kiewit Hall,
- [00:03:28.230]that will be named for the Kiewit Corporation
- [00:03:30.680]as the lead donor for that, uh, new facility.
- [00:03:34.250]It's all new instructional facilities
- [00:03:36.300]for our College of Engineering.
- [00:03:37.840]160 million dollar total expansion of that college
- [00:03:41.485]where we know there is huge demand
- [00:03:44.070]and we want to grow that college into
- [00:03:47.330]a bigger and higher-stature college of engineering
- [00:03:51.170]moving forward here on campus.
- [00:03:54.310]And then the athletic facilities, on top of that,
- [00:03:56.786]you have a 350-some million in academic facilities
- [00:04:00.433]and into be in a position to look at
- [00:04:04.210]a new football all-inclusive training facility,
- [00:04:07.544]um, combined with a new training table
- [00:04:11.514]and a new academic support center
- [00:04:13.890]for all of our student athletes
- [00:04:16.080]on the site of our current track-and-field facility
- [00:04:18.660]on this side of the Ed Weir Track
- [00:04:21.506]that will be relocated now to north of Devaney.
- [00:04:25.650]And the new track-and-field facility
- [00:04:27.600]will connect all of our indoor track,
- [00:04:29.350]our outdoor track-and-field all in one place, so to speak,
- [00:04:33.900]with new facilities for that program.
- [00:04:36.520]And this new 150 million dollar football
- [00:04:40.149]and student athlete facility housing them
- [00:04:44.240]right on campus, opening into the campus
- [00:04:47.410]for all of our athletes, for the first time
- [00:04:49.580]opening into Memorial Mall.
- [00:04:51.670]It's really exciting.
- [00:04:53.540]Uh, will put Nebraska back in the lead, we know,
- [00:04:57.520]nationally, with the best facilities
- [00:04:59.760]for our student athletes of anywhere in the country.
- [00:05:02.428]Um, supported primarily by private support,
- [00:05:06.480]100 million dollars being raised to support that facility.
- [00:05:10.680]Philanthropically, just pretty danged exciting times
- [00:05:14.540]at the University of Nebraska.
- [00:05:16.000]More than half a billion dollars of new investment
- [00:05:18.460]into the infrastructure here at UNL.
- [00:05:20.830]That's the Chancellor, Ronnie Green.
- [00:05:22.960]I'm John Baylor.
- [00:05:23.793]Stay right there, more Husker volleyball
- [00:05:24.846]after you hear this.
- [00:05:26.130]Powered by Emeritus,
- [00:05:27.800]this is Big Red Volleyball.
