- [00:00:11.885]They are a part of Aphasia Community Partners,
- [00:00:14.170]a program at the University of Nebraska Lincoln,
- [00:00:16.950]that pairs volunteers with individuals who have aphasia.

- [00:00:23.490]Typically we meet up at a coffee house,
- [00:00:26.070]or one time we met at Barnes and Noble and we just
- [00:00:28.540]get a snack and kind of talk about how our weeks are going.
- [00:00:31.540]And just kind of get him more comfortable
- [00:00:33.270]with his communication.
- [00:00:34.810]Ten years ago Terry had a stroke
- [00:00:36.800]causing injury to part of the brain.
- [00:00:39.310]And your language center is the part of your brain
- [00:00:41.810]that helps you to find words and to be able to put
- [00:00:45.630]those word in the correct order.
- [00:00:47.450]And it also helps you to comprehend the words
- [00:00:49.840]that you hear.

- [00:00:53.350]graduate student Jenna Haverkamp helps Terry deal
- [00:00:56.390]with the challenges that come with aphasia.
- [00:00:59.340]The speech, language and hearing clinic at the
- [00:01:01.550]Barkley Center is also a training ground
- [00:01:04.010]for speech pathology students.
- [00:01:06.050]I feel like that's really preparing me to go out
- [00:01:09.311]into the real world and apply what I know
- [00:01:13.840]because I've already had that experience.
- [00:01:15.890]University research is put to use
- [00:01:18.160]in the clinic to address a broad range of disorders
- [00:01:21.100]among clients of all ages.
- [00:01:23.600]We're training students in a top 20 ranked program
- [00:01:26.580]in the country to become excellent
- [00:01:28.700]speech language pathologists and to expand services
- [00:01:32.240]to people who need the service.

- [00:01:36.150]to improve brain function and learn strategies
- [00:01:39.080]that help them compensate for a loss.

- [00:01:43.660]with commonly used phrases.

- [00:01:53.960]and a sense of humor, but aphasia can be frustrating
- [00:01:57.170]and isolating.
- [00:01:58.510]Aphasia Community Partners helps break the silence.

- [00:02:05.960]at using the skills we're teaching them here in the clinic,
- [00:02:08.760]using them outside of the clinic.
- [00:02:10.580]And having someone there to kind of coach them while
- [00:02:13.120]they're out there.

- [00:02:16.410]confirms her decision to be a speech language pathologist.

- [00:02:22.240]about and I think I found that.
