- [00:00:00.170]This is the University of Nebraska
- [00:00:02.450]President's Halftime Show.
- [00:00:04.000]The University of Nebraska,
- [00:00:05.570]committed to education, research, and innovation
- [00:00:08.940]that helps create a better future.
- [00:00:13.270]We are back, halftime, 14 nothing.
- [00:00:15.240]Gophers with a lead over Nebraska at the half
- [00:00:17.380]and delighted to be joined by the chancellor
- [00:00:19.070]of the University of Nebraska, Ronnie Green
- [00:00:20.670]and athletic director Bill Moos,
- [00:00:22.730]couple of Ag guys.
- [00:00:24.840]You kinda like this snow, don't ya Ronnie?
- [00:00:26.840]Oh, of course.
- [00:00:27.940]And I see it's Ag Day here, too.
- [00:00:29.990]In Minnesota, they're celebrating Ag.
- [00:00:32.060]A little bit of snow, you know nothing wrong with that.
- [00:00:34.430]Well we wanted to bring you two up here,
- [00:00:36.080]major announcement a couple of weeks ago Bill,
- [00:00:38.259]with announcement of a new football facility.
- [00:00:40.610]Let's update the fans a little bit about
- [00:00:42.277]your thought process,
- [00:00:43.800]about doing this at this particular time.
- [00:00:47.020]Well one of the reasons is that
- [00:00:48.520]our current facility isn't large enough
- [00:00:50.950]to accommodate our roster.
- [00:00:52.300]And it was really built around the middle of 2006, seven
- [00:00:57.240]right in there to accommodate about
- [00:00:59.770]100 maybe 110 football players.
- [00:01:02.330]And our roster right now is moving close to 160
- [00:01:05.780]so just the square footage was needed.
- [00:01:09.030]And a lot of the other amenities
- [00:01:10.590]that really I think are gonna help us
- [00:01:13.590]in regards to recruiting and developing our players
- [00:01:16.340]are gonna be in this new facility.
- [00:01:17.830]And I think it's important also Greg, to point out that
- [00:01:20.623]it's going to benefit all of our student athletes.
- [00:01:23.480]Our academics center is gonna be in the new building,
- [00:01:26.230]along with all of our nutrition piece,
- [00:01:28.810]and that's the training table and all that goes with it too.
- [00:01:31.530]So all of our over 650 student athletes are gonna
- [00:01:35.460]be able to enjoy this new building.
- [00:01:37.370]Chancellor, this is one of several
- [00:01:39.180]big projects going on on campus.
- [00:01:41.180]This is a little different
- [00:01:42.160]because it's a athletic department funded one.
- [00:01:44.900]Well that's right.
- [00:01:46.036]We talked when we made the announcement
- [00:01:48.960]here a couple of weeks ago about how
- [00:01:50.720]we can't find the time in our 150 year history
- [00:01:54.060]at the university when there's as much investment
- [00:01:56.530]going into the infrastructure of the university
- [00:01:59.340]is what we see out here ahead of us
- [00:02:01.670]in the next couple three years time.
- [00:02:04.160]But over 350 million dollars in investment in
- [00:02:07.210]academic facilities and College of Education,
- [00:02:10.180]College of Engineering, across the campus
- [00:02:13.070]both on city and east campuses.
- [00:02:14.780]And then this 155 million dollar facility
- [00:02:17.756]will be unlike any other in the country, we know that.
- [00:02:22.210]And Bill's already talked about
- [00:02:23.560]the need for that in the athletics program.
- [00:02:26.800]But in that case, we're building that
- [00:02:31.602]largely supported with private philanthropy dollars,
- [00:02:36.010]raising 100 million dollars to go
- [00:02:38.441]into the building of that facility.
- [00:02:41.150]And no state funds, no student funds.
- [00:02:44.570]Our athletic department here,
- [00:02:46.580]we're one of very few in the NCAA national league
- [00:02:50.090]that receives no state support or
- [00:02:52.738]no university support directly including from students.
- [00:02:57.760]And it the turn, turns back,
- [00:03:00.420]I think this past year Bill,
- [00:03:01.930]29 million dollars to the university
- [00:03:04.390]in terms of tuition, services that the university
- [00:03:07.760]provides for athletics, and scholarship support
- [00:03:10.610]for students who are not athletes themselves.
- [00:03:14.114]So we're looking forward to
- [00:03:16.650]very successful fundraising campaign,
- [00:03:18.820]we already have a very strong lead on that
- [00:03:21.850]early in this process.
- [00:03:23.250]And we expect to have that fundraising completed here
- [00:03:25.940]over the next six months.
- [00:03:27.160]Yeah Bill I was gonna ask you,
- [00:03:28.320]what kind of response have you gotten
- [00:03:30.310]since this now is out there from your boosters,
- [00:03:33.050]your backers, your supporters of the program?
- [00:03:34.960]What kind of response are you getting?
- [00:03:36.820]It's been very very solid.
- [00:03:38.700]We've got a great deal of support at all levels.
- [00:03:41.950]We've got some major gifts that are committed verbally,
- [00:03:45.440]all of our gifts right now are verbal.
- [00:03:48.240]And then on down, and so everybody can be involved.
- [00:03:51.430]And I really get a feel and the passion of our fans
- [00:03:55.580]that they wanna see Husker football get back
- [00:03:58.310]to where it's rightful place is,
- [00:03:59.840]and this is gonna be a big big piece of that.
- [00:04:03.076]What kinda time table
- [00:04:03.909]are we talking about here Bill?
- [00:04:05.690]And I know that can change obviously
- [00:04:07.390]with construction and that type of thing,
- [00:04:08.950]give us kind of an estimated time table for the project?
- [00:04:12.120]Ideally, we'd have our funding set
- [00:04:14.890]our funding model all fulfilled by late winter
- [00:04:19.310]and on into the spring and hopefully
- [00:04:21.520]maybe break ground in the spring.
- [00:04:23.460]I would guess maybe late spring,
- [00:04:25.090]because we got a lot of work to do before that
- [00:04:27.110]in design and all those things.
- [00:04:29.340]And then if we could stay on the schedule that we feel
- [00:04:32.440]that is not too ambitious but would serve us well,
- [00:04:37.470]we could open up prior to the 2022 season.
- [00:04:41.360]That summer get moved in before fall camp starts.
- [00:04:44.010]So student athletes that are being recruited
- [00:04:46.010]right now will be able to take advantage of that
- [00:04:48.480]before their playing days are over?
- [00:04:49.610]That's right, well Wan'Dale Robinson,
- [00:04:51.630]we unfortunately saw he had a little bump
- [00:04:53.940]here in the game earlier tonight.
- [00:04:55.520]But he spoke at the announcement here a couple of weeks ago
- [00:04:59.309]as a freshman here this year he talked about
- [00:05:01.990]being able to walk into that facility
- [00:05:04.034]here in a couple of years time.
- [00:05:06.480]So we're looking forward to that 2022.
- [00:05:08.860]The track where the facility will be built,
- [00:05:11.330]on the current track, be relocated out to
- [00:05:14.850]north of Davaney, it's part of that complex.
- [00:05:18.510]So underway with that as well here
- [00:05:20.810]coming up very very soon.
- [00:05:22.140]I know you're very proud in talking about
- [00:05:25.000]this being the 150th anniversary of this fine institution.
- [00:05:28.370]This is a way to look forward,
- [00:05:29.690]this is a way to go to the future.
- [00:05:31.080]Oh absolutely, the impact that the university
- [00:05:34.290]has had in that 15 decades had been huge.
- [00:05:37.560]We know that even the best days for the university
- [00:05:40.350]lie ahead of us and as I said,
- [00:05:43.630]we've studied our history pretty carefully
- [00:05:45.660]this last couple of years as we led into
- [00:05:47.880]this big anniversary year,
- [00:05:49.150]and I can not find a time period anywhere in our history
- [00:05:52.920]where we're making the investment's for the future
- [00:05:55.370]like we are at UNL here these next few years.
- [00:05:58.750]It's tremendously exciting.
- [00:06:00.400]Well thank you both for coming in and updating us,
- [00:06:02.410]pretty exciting times for the Huskers.
- [00:06:04.010]And we seem to give some offense and score points
- [00:06:06.320]on the board here Bill, in the second half.
- [00:06:08.380]Well let's hope so.
- [00:06:09.213]I think we worked some things out in the locker room
- [00:06:11.670]and coming back ready to go.
- [00:06:12.820]No doubt, thank you gentlemen.
- [00:06:13.990]You bet, go Big Red.
- [00:06:14.823]Ronnie Green, University of Nebraska Lincoln
- [00:06:16.610]chancellor and Bill Moos, athletic director
- [00:06:18.190]here at Nebraska.
- [00:06:19.140]It's 14 nothing, Minnesota with the lead.
- [00:06:21.320]At the break, we've got more halftime coming up next.
- [00:06:23.700]This is the University of Nebraska
- [00:06:25.950]President's Halftime Show.
- [00:06:27.510]The University of Nebraska,
- [00:06:29.090]committed to education, research, and innovation
- [00:06:32.460]that helps create a better future.
