- [00:00:00.178](mid-tempo music)
- [00:00:08.760]My name is Sydney Everhart.
- [00:00:10.060]I'm part of the Department of Plant Pathology
- [00:00:11.870]and I'm also part of the Cultivate ACCESS program.
- [00:00:14.890]Today I'm going to be telling you
- [00:00:16.140]about what the Cultivate ACCESS Ambassadors do
- [00:00:18.600]as part of our program.
- [00:00:20.430]So, who are the Cultivate ACCESS Ambassadors?
- [00:00:23.400]These are usually undergraduate students already at UNL.
- [00:00:27.100]They're typically already involved
- [00:00:28.970]in some type of STEM outreach activity.
- [00:00:32.180]So, this stands for
- [00:00:33.200]science, technology, engineering and math
- [00:00:35.343]and these students really, within our program,
- [00:00:38.530]provide a direct link to the scholars
- [00:00:41.310]and help facilitate the interactions with their mentors.
- [00:00:44.920]So, what are some of the things
- [00:00:46.010]that Cultivate ACCESS Ambassadors do in our program?
- [00:00:49.120]So, one of the first things that we do,
- [00:00:50.530]is we have our Cultivate ACCESS Ambassadors enroll
- [00:00:53.100]in a course in the fall semester.
- [00:00:55.460]So, this semester long course teaches them leadership
- [00:00:59.300]and professional development skills that can help them
- [00:01:02.520]in their career and also in this mentoring program
- [00:01:05.940]because, really, their role is going to be serving
- [00:01:08.250]as that direct link to the scholars.
- [00:01:10.480]So the Cultivate ACCESS Ambassadors will continue to meet,
- [00:01:13.690]even into the spring semester
- [00:01:15.590]and this is because one of the major roles is they play
- [00:01:17.920]is connecting to the scholars.
- [00:01:20.130]So, one of the things that we facilitate
- [00:01:22.230]is having the Cultivate ACCESS Ambassadors
- [00:01:24.460]have two face-to-face meetings with each of their scholars.
- [00:01:28.200]One of those meetings will happen around October
- [00:01:30.410]and the other meeting will happen later on in March.
- [00:01:32.890]And between those two meeting times,
- [00:01:34.640]they'll continue to be in contact with their scholar
- [00:01:37.280]through whatever form of communication that they prefer.
- [00:01:39.790]Whether that's sending emails or chatting on the phone
- [00:01:42.730]or text messaging or even using something like Skype
- [00:01:45.710]to have face to face virtual meetings.
- [00:01:48.980]So, throughout the year the Cultivate ACCESS Ambassadors
- [00:01:51.910]will also receive a series of coaching sessions
- [00:01:54.740]from the Cultivate ACCESS leadership.
- [00:01:58.070]And so these coaching sessions will happen
- [00:01:59.950]about every two weeks
- [00:02:01.180]and will cover topics like time management,
- [00:02:04.090]how to set your goals, how to define some milestones
- [00:02:06.970]and then also how to work towards achieving your goals.
- [00:02:10.430]We'll also talk about interpersonal skills.
- [00:02:12.660]How to navigate more difficult interpersonal relationships
- [00:02:15.350]and also how to really make the most
- [00:02:17.290]out of your interpersonal relationships.
- [00:02:20.000]One of the other ways that we're going to have
- [00:02:21.510]our Cultivate ACCESS Ambassadors get involved
- [00:02:24.060]in this program
- [00:02:25.300]is by creating what are called virtual meet-ups.
- [00:02:28.060]These virtual meet-ups are really team meetings,
- [00:02:31.150]peer-to-peer connections between the scholars themselves
- [00:02:34.350]and also between the mentors.
- [00:02:36.640]Now, these will be virtual meetings,
- [00:02:38.380]but our Cultivate ACCESS Ambassadors will facilitate this.
- [00:02:41.555]One of the outcomes is that the scholars will get a chance
- [00:02:45.000]to get to know their cohorts, the peers,
- [00:02:47.080]all of the other students
- [00:02:48.110]that are going through this program.
- [00:02:50.070]And the mentors will get a chance
- [00:02:51.760]for professional networking
- [00:02:53.240]and they'll also get to share some tips
- [00:02:54.960]on mentoring abilities.
- [00:02:56.699]So, the Cultivate ACCESS Ambassadors, as you can see,
- [00:02:59.830]play a really important role in our group.
- [00:03:02.680]They have the opportunity to bring new ideas
- [00:03:04.960]for creative activities on how we can promote STEM careers,
- [00:03:09.300]and really, if you're a Cultivate ACCESS Ambassador,
- [00:03:12.510]firstly, I just wanna say welcome to the program.
- [00:03:14.810]I think you have a really exciting opportunity ahead of you
- [00:03:17.940]and we're looking forward to having you
- [00:03:19.240]as part of our team.
