- [00:00:01.990]Hello, my name is Ting Carson.
- [00:00:04.090]I'm a professor at University of Nebraska.
- [00:00:06.240]I work at Department of Computer Science Engineering.
- [00:00:09.220]I've been a member of the Teaching Academy
- [00:00:12.050]with the College of Arts and Sciences
- [00:00:14.490]for the past two plus years.
- [00:00:17.160]I'd like to offer a tip in terms
- [00:00:18.780]of supporting student success.
- [00:00:21.800]I will do this,
- [00:00:23.080]on the first page of an exam, I put down a clause that says,
- [00:00:28.667]"The exam score will not be official
- [00:00:32.546]"or count towards the student's overall grade,
- [00:00:35.267]"unless the student has met with me
- [00:00:37.537]"one on one to pick up the exam."
- [00:00:40.510]And so, I will review the exam score
- [00:00:42.840]at the time as well and during the meeting.
- [00:00:46.090]So, for students, let's say ,
- [00:00:49.360]they've done well in the exam,
- [00:00:50.827]I will use this meeting to encourage them
- [00:00:54.080]to pursue, for example undergrad research projects
- [00:00:58.620]or to encourage them to look into
- [00:01:03.636]other endeavors.
- [00:01:05.680]For students who've done poorly, for example
- [00:01:08.411]on the exam I'll use the opportunity
- [00:01:10.900]go over all the questions,
- [00:01:13.223]just to point out why and how they did wrong,
- [00:01:17.930]and then also to encourage them to continue
- [00:01:20.690]to work harder or to interact with me more often
- [00:01:27.360]either through emails or office hours,
- [00:01:29.920]to better the subject matter.
- [00:01:33.180]So, actually for some students who did very poorly
- [00:01:36.120]in the exams, I will actually ask them to,
- [00:01:41.230]I will give them for example, extra questions
- [00:01:44.010]to practice questions to go over and also to kind of,
- [00:01:48.980]ask them to interact,
- [00:01:51.890]to update me with questions on a weekly basis.
- [00:01:55.800]So, I find this quite useful and then as,
- [00:01:58.520]over time as my classes,
- [00:02:00.800]the number of students in my classes get bigger and bigger,
- [00:02:04.570]I cut down on the
- [00:02:10.280]of the students and less of time I need, I could afford
- [00:02:14.630]to meet with my students one on one.
- [00:02:16.690]So, one thing I did, have done so far was
- [00:02:21.690]to reduce, to only require students who did poorly,
- [00:02:25.580]let's say below 60 or below 70 or below 75 percent
- [00:02:32.007]on the exam to meet with me.
- [00:02:34.640]And then I will still offer other students to
- [00:02:40.150]chance to also meet with me over the exam if they want to
- [00:02:43.130]and by doing this I kind of, if I have two exams
- [00:02:46.150]or three exams in a class, I at least have
- [00:02:50.410]two or three chances of interacting
- [00:02:53.780]one on one with every student
- [00:02:55.980]and also kind of show that I care about their progress,
- [00:03:02.080]I care about the understanding in the classroom
- [00:03:04.300]and also want to just, kind of understand how the approach
- [00:03:07.970]solving each question for them or answering each question
- [00:03:11.610]and see how I can actually help them make that process
- [00:03:15.970]more efficient, more effective as well,
- [00:03:18.570]for me, how do I instruct them better in the class.
- [00:03:22.350]So these are the things that I do
- [00:03:25.340]that I've found to be quite effective in my classes.
- [00:03:30.340]Thank you very much, bye bye.
