- [00:00:02.370]We're back on Countdown to Kickoff.
- [00:00:03.730]Greg Sharpe with you from Folsom Field
- [00:00:05.410]on the campus of the University of Colorado.
- [00:00:07.490]The Huskers and the Buffaloes set to play.
- [00:00:09.200]Both teams 1-0 coming into this one today.
- [00:00:11.750]And as we do each and every week,
- [00:00:13.350]chance to sit down with University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:00:15.490]Chancellor, Ronnie Green, you've been out here
- [00:00:17.830]couple days, correct?
- [00:00:18.730]You've had a few events.
- [00:00:22.409]Had a great event on Thursday night
- [00:00:25.130]with Fred Hoiberg and a group of alums
- [00:00:27.720]down in the greater Denver area.
- [00:00:30.650]The man who hosted us, alum named Earl Wright
- [00:00:33.210]who played on the 1960,
- [00:00:35.418]'61, '62 basketball team under Fred's grandpa,
- [00:00:38.540]Jerry Bush. Nice.
- [00:00:39.650]So it was a real special evening there.
- [00:00:41.210]And then we've been out with alums and Huskers
- [00:00:43.260]over yesterday and today,
- [00:00:45.360]a lot of red in Boulder, Colorado,
- [00:00:47.295](laughing)
- [00:00:48.128]and that's a really, really good thing.
- [00:00:49.460]So it's gonna be great to see all the Husker fans
- [00:00:52.330]in Folsom Field here in a bit.
- [00:00:53.750]Lot of alums live out here, right?
- [00:00:55.250]A lot of alums on the Front Range of Colorado,
- [00:00:57.280]you know, one of the fastest growing areas of the U.S.,
- [00:00:59.750]and a lot of our folks are out on this area,
- [00:01:02.930]and a lot of folks came from Nebraska.
- [00:01:05.670]I think they might've had a little bit
- [00:01:06.870]of needing to guide people down I-80
- [00:01:09.210](laughing)
- [00:01:10.043]and open the flood gates yesterday,
- [00:01:11.180]so it was great to see that.
- [00:01:13.430]And walking around campus this morning,
- [00:01:15.480]there is red everywhere.
- [00:01:17.210]It is great to be in Boulder,
- [00:01:18.480]and it's great to see Husker Nation here.
- [00:01:20.010]This is one of the prettier venues in college football,
- [00:01:22.400]mountains right behind us. Oh yeah, absolutely.
- [00:01:24.280]I mean, Folsom Field, the campus in Boulder,
- [00:01:27.870]it's pretty amazing scenery.
- [00:01:30.820]I do remember being here for a number of games
- [00:01:33.370]over the years, our family lived in Colorado for 10 years,
- [00:01:37.380]and we have some score to settle, you know.
- [00:01:41.053]Right.
- [00:01:41.886]And so looking forward to a really good game
- [00:01:43.010]with the team today.
- [00:01:43.843]And you spent some time up the road at Fort Collins.
- [00:01:45.918]We lived in Fort Collins for about six years.
- [00:01:48.700]I did one of my grad degree in Fort Collins.
- [00:01:51.160]A number of years before that we lived in South Denver area
- [00:01:55.120]for the last three years we were in Colorado.
- [00:01:57.580]And we were here in 2001,
- [00:01:59.510]we remember that game.
- [00:02:00.520]Today's not gonna be like that at all.
- [00:02:03.037]It's gonna be a whole different ball game,
- [00:02:04.410]and we're looking forward to the team
- [00:02:07.000]and Husker Nation being here today.
- [00:02:08.900]Chancellor, one of the big stories in the news all week
- [00:02:10.920]was the hurricane down in the Southeast,
- [00:02:12.810]and our thoughts go out to all those folks
- [00:02:14.790]who had damage that they suffered.
- [00:02:16.420]And obviously in the Bahamas where it really got hit hard.
- [00:02:19.070]We had some rough weather out in the Denver area yesterday.
- [00:02:21.880]I understand the University of Nebraska
- [00:02:23.630]is leading a huge research project that's studying
- [00:02:26.440]these dangerous storms like tornadoes.
- [00:02:29.230]What could that mean for the future of forecasting?
- [00:02:31.030]Well, it's a big project and a big deal
- [00:02:33.350]that's now gotten underway this past year.
- [00:02:37.251]We have a group of researchers and collaborators
- [00:02:39.440]around the country that are studying supercells,
- [00:02:42.464]and by studying those, figuring out a way
- [00:02:45.880]to be more predictive about those supercells.
- [00:02:48.780]It's called TORUS, this effort, Targeted Observation
- [00:02:52.130]by Radars and Unmanned Aircraft Systems.
- [00:02:54.970]And they chase supercells all over the Greater Plains
- [00:02:58.790]all summer, covered more than 9,000 miles this summer
- [00:03:03.040]across five states, including Nebraska and here in Colorado.
- [00:03:06.880]And like I said, they're really trying to use
- [00:03:09.310]these observations in the middle of these storms
- [00:03:11.470]to allow us to better predict the accuracy of forecasting,
- [00:03:15.410]could save lives as a result.
- [00:03:17.010]You know, just last night we were here in Denver,
- [00:03:19.740]tornado warnings in the Denver area.
- [00:03:21.500]I think our team actually got a little diversion
- [00:03:24.340]getting into Denver International Airport.
- [00:03:27.250]So this summer, this team that's been out across the Plains
- [00:03:31.550]is partnering with the University of Colorado,
- [00:03:33.760]so it's kinda fitting we're taking about that here today.
- [00:03:36.470]It included 13 Huskers on the team,
- [00:03:38.540]10 undergraduates, and three grad students
- [00:03:40.650]that did all of that study this summer.
- [00:03:42.750]And at least one of those students,
- [00:03:44.570]her name's Maddie Dedrickson,
- [00:03:46.460]she's as meteorology, climatology and math major
- [00:03:49.350]from Malcolm, just outside of Lincoln.
- [00:03:51.720]And she got really excited about this work in high school
- [00:03:54.270]when she attended UNL weather camps
- [00:03:56.560]through our School of Natural Resources
- [00:03:58.570]that we've held for a long time.
- [00:04:00.610]A lot of really high-tech equipment
- [00:04:03.330]involved in this effort, drones certainly,
- [00:04:06.320]UAVs that are part of this, aircraft,
- [00:04:09.400]we have a NOAA P3 manned hurricane hunter aircraft
- [00:04:12.960]that's involved in this TORUS project.
- [00:04:15.220]We have eight Mesonet trucks that are collecting data,
- [00:04:18.840]three of those were built by Nebraska students,
- [00:04:21.560]engineering students, balloons,
- [00:04:23.800]three balloon-borne sensor launchers,
- [00:04:27.000]three mobile radar systems, and a LiDAR unit.
- [00:04:30.160]I mean, this is high-tech stuff
- [00:04:32.830]to really help us understand these supercells.
- [00:04:35.300]So a big deal, big project, it's an example
- [00:04:39.160]of the kind of internationally leading research
- [00:04:41.700]that the University of Nebraska's doing every day.
- [00:04:43.980]Fantastic.
- [00:04:44.960]Well, Nebraska football on the road
- [00:04:46.490]for the the first time this season.
- [00:04:47.700]We know when we have home games it's a huge production
- [00:04:50.540]around Lincoln, the campus lights up.
- [00:04:52.180]But there's another big production
- [00:04:53.820]that's gonna be just south of Memorial Stadium
- [00:04:56.320]coming later this fall at the Lied Center.
- [00:04:58.740]What's this all about?
- [00:05:00.050]Well, Greg, you know, one of the hidden gems
- [00:05:02.720]at the University of Nebraska,
- [00:05:04.600]it's not hidden to us, but it is maybe to the greater world,
- [00:05:08.730]it's the Lied Center for the Performing Arts,
- [00:05:10.720]now celebrating it's 30th year.
- [00:05:12.940]This is its 30th season since the Lied Center opened
- [00:05:15.790]in the 1980s, and it's a big year.
- [00:05:18.800]One of the best performance venues
- [00:05:21.020]in this part of the world, no doubt about it.
- [00:05:23.990]New production of "The Phantom of the Opera"
- [00:05:26.140]coming in this season which is a big deal
- [00:05:28.140]with all kinds of new special effects and pyrotechnics.
- [00:05:31.210]Biggest Broadway production ever to come to Lincoln
- [00:05:34.070]and be staged on the Lied Center stage.
- [00:05:36.480]So a lot of working going into preparing for that show
- [00:05:39.313]that'll run through multiple weeks in October
- [00:05:42.730]and November coming up here before too long.
- [00:05:45.920]All part of that 30th season of the Lied Center
- [00:05:48.360]that I was talking about earlier
- [00:05:49.550]that we're kicking off this month,
- [00:05:50.750]they always have an amazing season across all of the arts.
- [00:05:55.420]This year is gonna be even more special.
- [00:05:57.590]Also at the Lied Center this fall is
- [00:06:00.070]the E.N. Thompson Forum on World Issues,
- [00:06:02.880]one of the best forums like this in the country
- [00:06:06.420]that's sponsored at the university,
- [00:06:08.580]three of those this fall,
- [00:06:10.180]two Nobel Prize winners who will be on campus
- [00:06:13.450]for the E.N. Thompson Forum.
- [00:06:14.790]So lots at the Lied Center in their 30th season
- [00:06:18.420]that we're excited to be kicking off
- [00:06:19.900]as a big production as well.
- [00:06:21.330]That is fantastic.
- [00:06:22.560]Great to see you, have fun today.
- [00:06:24.600]Let's get this one in the win column and get back home.
- [00:06:27.330]Absolutely.
- [00:06:28.575]It's good to be back in Boulder,
- [00:06:30.560]and like I said, it's just a really cool thing
- [00:06:34.270]to see, as I was saying to somebody earlier today,
- [00:06:37.160]you know, they've got this called Red Rocks
- [00:06:38.880]up above Denver, you know,
- [00:06:40.700]we're gonna create a new version of Red Rocks here.
- [00:06:42.942](laughs) Love it.
- [00:06:43.775]Go big red.
- [00:06:44.608]That's great.
- [00:06:45.441]Ronnie Green with us here on Countdown to Kickoff.
