- [00:00:24.760]You know, the start of the school year's
- [00:00:26.280]gone off with a with a bang this week.
- [00:00:28.370]Getting students back in,
- [00:00:29.860]and faculty back in and
- [00:00:31.820]a great kickoff to the school year for UNL,
- [00:00:35.310]and leading up to this opening game
- [00:00:37.750]and opening kickoff today has been exciting to think about.
- [00:00:41.760]Lots of anticipation everywhere,
- [00:00:43.660]I mean, we just feel it in the air.
- [00:00:45.980]First football game of the year.
- [00:00:47.950]People been counting it down
- [00:00:49.220]by the hour and the minute, you know, to get here.
- [00:00:52.600]I think we have an excitement ahead for us,
- [00:00:55.670]we have an idea of kind of what to expect
- [00:00:57.500]from a quarterback and the offense,
- [00:00:59.310]and I'm excited to see the how the defense
- [00:01:01.670]defense and the special teams perform, as well
- [00:01:04.220]and I know the whole state and Husker Nation
- [00:01:06.520]is excited about today.
- [00:01:08.550]Hoping for no storms, you know it,
- [00:01:10.310]remembering back to the big kickoff last year
- [00:01:13.360]of Coach Frost's first game,
- [00:01:14.970]and all the anticipation and excitement about that and
- [00:01:19.150]the tunnel walk was something to remember for all of us,
- [00:01:21.920]you know, and then that kick,
- [00:01:23.980]and then we know the rest of the history, right?
- [00:01:28.140]You just couldn't make that up.
- [00:01:29.800]So, hoping for no storms today
- [00:01:32.290]and for a great game.
- [00:01:33.980]And then, you know,
- [00:01:34.950]it's not only football that we're kicking off this weekend.
- [00:01:38.670]We also kicked off officially our volleyball season.
- [00:01:42.020]After a great Red-White Scrimmage a week ago
- [00:01:44.160]with a full, you know, another full practice, so to speak,
- [00:01:48.240]with Creighton, UCLA, and Baylor in town.
- [00:01:51.410]And then, Women's Soccer
- [00:01:53.300]had their opener last night
- [00:01:55.240]against Clemson, as well.
- [00:01:56.390]So, nothing quite like liking at the beginning of
- [00:01:59.290]a Huskers sports season, and today's a big day.
- [00:02:02.590]Oh, we're loving having everybody come back to town.
- [00:02:04.690]Loved seeing all the folks come back into Lincoln,
- [00:02:06.520]see what's changed since last football season.
- [00:02:08.910]All right, new academic year, new fall sport season.
- [00:02:12.640]You have a signature academic program
- [00:02:14.720]that has launched this fall with Johnny Carson's name
- [00:02:18.270]attached to it, tell us about this.
- [00:02:20.550]Well, it is really, really exciting,
- [00:02:22.720]and we've been working toward
- [00:02:24.350]the opening of this new Carson Center
- [00:02:26.430]for Emerging Media Arts over the last four years.
- [00:02:30.090]From when the gift from the Johnny Carson Foundation
- [00:02:33.320]was announced in 2015
- [00:02:35.890]to plan toward being able to open this new center,
- [00:02:38.870]which we did this week
- [00:02:40.810]with the beginning of the school year.
- [00:02:43.180]A 20 million dollar gift
- [00:02:44.880]from our famous alumn, Johhny Carson,
- [00:02:47.840]from Northfolk, Nebraska.
- [00:02:49.700]A student here at the University of Nebraska,
- [00:02:53.040]and as Johnny supported the university in a lot of ways
- [00:02:56.560]during his life and the Carson Foundation
- [00:02:59.740]made this gift to really
- [00:03:02.430]plow new ground in emerging media arts.
- [00:03:06.220]It's now in the former Nebraska bookstore
- [00:03:09.750]at 13th and Q Streets,
- [00:03:12.200]just on the south side of our campus.
- [00:03:14.780]Facility opened this week,
- [00:03:16.790]and the first cohort of students,
- [00:03:18.730]33 students now are in this program
- [00:03:21.160]for the first class coming in
- [00:03:23.790]as a premiere destination
- [00:03:25.600]for creating transformative creative leaders
- [00:03:29.730]with best students, entrepreneurs, visiting scientists
- [00:03:33.940]from around the world as part of this effort to produce
- [00:03:37.240]the storytellers of the future.
- [00:03:39.300]It's the aim of the program
- [00:03:42.500]for really what are even for us now
- [00:03:45.620]unimaginable new careers in the media industry
- [00:03:48.900]as it changes.
- [00:03:50.850]We're also very excited that the program
- [00:03:54.050]won a Hewlett Packard/Educause
- [00:03:55.840]Campus of the Future designation,
- [00:03:58.170]the first in the Big Ten to be recognized this way,
- [00:04:01.640]and to work in this partnership with HP
- [00:04:05.570]for investigating ways to bring in augmented reality,
- [00:04:09.410]virtual reality, 3D scanning and printing technologies
- [00:04:13.030]that can benefit teaching, learning, and research
- [00:04:15.380]in a way in this new Center,
- [00:04:17.160]puts us in some pretty stout company
- [00:04:20.070]with MIT, with Yale,
- [00:04:22.240]Harvard, and Dartmouth
- [00:04:24.340]who have this kinds of relationships with HP.
- [00:04:27.350]So, we're pretty excited to be in that category.
- [00:04:31.060]Excited about the new faculty who have joined the program,
- [00:04:34.790]Ash Smith and Jesse Fleming, our two new faculty
- [00:04:38.320]who have come from Stanford,
- [00:04:40.300]and from The Design Lab at Hyundai,
- [00:04:42.880]and Megan Elliott who is our inaugural director.
- [00:04:46.640]Megan has been with us the last couple of years,
- [00:04:48.760]and building this center.
- [00:04:51.025]She's pretty hard to contain
- [00:04:53.210]in her own energy and enthusiasm
- [00:04:55.110]for everyone that has met her.
- [00:04:56.600]Megan's worked in Beijing, and London, and Sydney,
- [00:04:59.210]Singapore, Paris, and is a real name
- [00:05:02.080]in this industry who is leading and kicking off this effort,
- [00:05:04.980]so very, very, very excited about the new
- [00:05:06.810]Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts.
- [00:05:09.160]Oh, and rightfully so.
- [00:05:10.080]So, the support from the Johnny Carson Foundation
- [00:05:12.810]made this possible.
- [00:05:13.643]You mentioned Megan's the director, and hired the faculty,
- [00:05:16.210]but I don't think people get the full picture of just
- [00:05:18.330]how unique this Carson Center is
- [00:05:20.350]until you know who
- [00:05:21.340]is among the network of
- [00:05:23.340]advisory board members.
- [00:05:24.720]Can you tell us about some of the folks
- [00:05:25.800]that Megan's gonna be working with?
- [00:05:27.090]Yeah, I remember
- [00:05:29.280]about a year ago I met many of the folks
- [00:05:32.100]on this advisory board for the first time.
- [00:05:34.230]We actually were meeting in LA,
- [00:05:37.240]in Hollywood with this group
- [00:05:40.690]that are helping to provide advising
- [00:05:42.700]and capacity around how to build this program,
- [00:05:45.240]and how to make it really unique,
- [00:05:46.580]and it includes a who's who in new and emerging media.
- [00:05:50.060]And I can't list them all, but just to give you an example
- [00:05:53.460]of some of the folks that are involved,
- [00:05:55.140]Alex McDowell,
- [00:05:56.500]if you remember the film, Minority Report,
- [00:05:59.520]he worked on that,
- [00:06:00.680]known as the best narrative designer
- [00:06:02.590]of his generation in media.
- [00:06:05.000]Susan Bonds who's a former Disney Imagineer,
- [00:06:08.750]invented the genre of
- [00:06:10.210]alternate reality games.
- [00:06:13.840]Jeff Nicholas who's a virtual reality visionary,
- [00:06:17.010]has directed videos of Rihanna and for Justin Timberlake.
- [00:06:20.990]Maureen Fan, CEO of Baobab Studios,
- [00:06:25.540]the industry's leading virtual reality animation
- [00:06:28.850]studio in this space.
- [00:06:31.020]Sean Stewart, Creative Director for Magic Leap,
- [00:06:33.680]and a New York Times bestselling author of science fiction.
- [00:06:37.440]Nonny de la Peña, she's the CEO of the Emblematic Group,
- [00:06:41.590]acknowledged as the godmother of virtual reality,
- [00:06:44.050]you get the idea.
- [00:06:44.970]I mean, these are the leaders in this space,
- [00:06:48.560]who are advising,
- [00:06:50.130]on working with us to build this new center,
- [00:06:53.160]and to one that's truly internationally prominent.
- [00:06:55.860]That is fantastic.
- [00:06:56.760]Thank you so much for sharing all that with us here today.
- [00:06:59.070]It's so fun to be back at the stadium,
- [00:07:00.930]and getting ready, get you a runs in,

- [00:07:09.450]and we're looking forward to a big victory
