- [00:00:02.290]All right, thank you for that, Tristan.
- [00:00:05.110]So, my name is Megan Coan and I got to work alongside
- [00:00:09.040]with Hailey Wamsley, who's unfortunately not here today,
- [00:00:11.600]in Custer County.
- [00:00:15.350]So while we were in Custer County, we worked with
- [00:00:18.110]the Custer Economic Development Corporation,
- [00:00:20.190]which is called CEDC, and right away, when we were there
- [00:00:23.720]in the community, we really noticed first-hand
- [00:00:26.370]that their motto, "Rooted, but not standing still"
- [00:00:29.810]definitely holds true.
- [00:00:32.100]The county is always open to new ideas
- [00:00:35.600]and they never want to say no and stop growing,
- [00:00:37.840]so that's what we definitely took pride in there,
- [00:00:40.790]in our time.
- [00:00:41.910]So, like I said, my name is Megan Coan.
- [00:00:44.450]I am from Platte Center, Nebraska.
- [00:00:46.160]I am a senior here at the University of Nebraska Lincoln
- [00:00:48.910]studying agriculture education
- [00:00:50.670]with a focus in leadership and a minor in animal science.
- [00:00:53.941]Hailey Walmsley is from Norfolk.
- [00:00:55.970]She is a junior agriculture education major as well.
- [00:01:02.949]Our impact on Custer County, looking at this,
- [00:01:05.060]may be overwhelming, but, to me,
- [00:01:06.920]it brings pure joy to me,
- [00:01:09.290]because this is a list of nine projects
- [00:01:11.980]that Hailey and I got the opportunity to work on
- [00:01:15.060]and some of em were just words on a piece of paper
- [00:01:19.430]and other ones that were already kinda started,
- [00:01:21.920]their ideas were there, but we definitely
- [00:01:24.410]did not shy away from any of em,
- [00:01:25.900]and we took em on head on and started rollin' with em.
- [00:01:29.040]So I'm gonna talk briefly about three of em in particular.
- [00:01:31.860]The other group, they talked about The Barn,
- [00:01:34.370]it's a visitor center in Broken Bow, Custer County,
- [00:01:37.770]they take great pride in it.
- [00:01:39.510]So when we first got there, Hailey and I
- [00:01:41.590]looked at each other, immediately
- [00:01:42.880]fell in love with The Barn.
- [00:01:43.930]We're like, we wanna do something here,
- [00:01:45.380]because there's so much potential there,
- [00:01:47.830]and we want it to be utilized more.
- [00:01:50.500]So we found out that this year The Barn
- [00:01:53.310]is celebrating a 10 year anniversary,
- [00:01:55.140]so we're like, let's plan something.
- [00:01:57.160]We're like, let's make something inclusive for all ages,
- [00:02:01.806]so that way they can be grandparents,
- [00:02:06.210]all the way down to their grandkids,
- [00:02:09.051]cause we really wanted to focus
- [00:02:09.940]on inclusive leadership this summer.
- [00:02:15.806]Course the summer, we contacted whole bunch of people
- [00:02:18.740]and we create an event that I will talk about later.
- [00:02:23.940]With the idea of inclusive leadership,
- [00:02:25.830]I wanted to take that into interns,
- [00:02:30.160]so I went with an intern connection project,
- [00:02:32.740]which, I just went to Andrew,
- [00:02:34.400]I was like, let's do something
- [00:02:36.209]for the interns in Custer County.
- [00:02:38.100]It was started from nothing and I just
- [00:02:41.280]created different events because
- [00:02:43.350]I wanted an opportunity for the interns in Custer County,
- [00:02:46.420]not only to grow within the business
- [00:02:48.160]that they were interning at, but also socially,
- [00:02:50.920]and feel like they're part of the community.
- [00:02:53.200]I wanted them to grow so much that
- [00:02:55.190]they wanted to identify not only with Broken Bow,
- [00:02:57.330]but Custer County, in hopes that,
- [00:02:59.640]when they're done with college,
- [00:03:00.800]they wanna come back and have their home
- [00:03:02.910]be Broken Bow or Custer County.
- [00:03:05.080]So that was really great getting to interact
- [00:03:07.590]with the different interns and watching them
- [00:03:09.870]grow and develop throughout the summer.
- [00:03:12.630]Another solo project that I worked on
- [00:03:15.080]was the Custer County Passport.
- [00:03:17.120]Some of you may be familiar with the Nebraska Passport.
- [00:03:21.060]This is a spinoff of the Nebraska Passport,
- [00:03:23.060]and this is actually one side of,
- [00:03:25.340]it's a postcard, of the Custer County Passport
- [00:03:27.940]that I created.
- [00:03:29.100]So what I did is, one of my very first weeks there,
- [00:03:32.160]I went and toured Custer County,
- [00:03:33.690]and I was beyond amazed when I saw
- [00:03:35.990]all the different hidden gems
- [00:03:37.660]that Custer County has to offer,
- [00:03:39.710]and they do a good job about highlighting them,
- [00:03:43.050]but I wanted to take it to that next step.
- [00:03:46.075]There's a lot of historical landmarks in Custer County,
- [00:03:49.120]and I picked a few spots in each community,
- [00:03:53.200]and I highlighted em.
- [00:03:55.220]That is gonna be something that is gonna be
- [00:03:57.330]a long term thing that Custer County can go with.
- [00:04:02.290]So, growth and development for me personally,
- [00:04:06.790]so I'll just start off with this picture.
- [00:04:09.110]That's Andrew, and yesterday was actually
- [00:04:12.190]The Barn celebration, so take great pride in it.
- [00:04:18.100]One thing I struggled with actually this summer,
- [00:04:20.260]was I was like, okay I'm gonna start all these projects,
- [00:04:23.060]but I'm not gonna be able to see the finished product,
- [00:04:25.950]but as the time went on I was like,
- [00:04:27.700]it's okay, somebody's gotta be the one
- [00:04:30.090]to get the ball rolling,
- [00:04:31.290]but I went back yesterday and it was so incredible
- [00:04:34.390]to see something that, I started with nothing,
- [00:04:37.300]that was just an event, this was the date set,
- [00:04:39.810]and gotta see it be so successful,
- [00:04:43.080]and see my ideas be carried out,
- [00:04:44.980]and have the community just be there and so excited.
- [00:04:52.100]I work at Horn T Zoo, and one of my ideas was
- [00:04:55.411]to bring the zoo to Broken Bow.
- [00:04:58.720]So just the experience that I could be the one
- [00:05:01.410]to help the kids, the grandparents, parents,
- [00:05:05.070]just take all these different experiences
- [00:05:07.090]that they wouldn't have had if we wouldn't have
- [00:05:09.380]done this Barn celebration.
- [00:05:11.610]Also, awareness is just like being open
- [00:05:15.090]and understanding why people think the way they do,
- [00:05:17.590]whether they're from Callaway, or they're from Arnold,
- [00:05:20.250]or Broken Bow, just like what drives their thought process
- [00:05:24.220]and the actions that they do?
- [00:05:26.040]Networking was really huge for me.
- [00:05:28.960]Before I was coming into this internship,
- [00:05:33.240]I'm like, okay I'm just kinda gonna be like,
- [00:05:35.460]go through the motions, I was super scared
- [00:05:37.690]and intimidated to talk to anybody
- [00:05:39.130]that either was a business owner,
- [00:05:41.210]somebody that was a CEO, a president of a company,
- [00:05:44.380]or that held a doctorate, or a job title.
- [00:05:47.550]I was like, okay I'm just a 21 year old
- [00:05:49.770]from a small rural community,
- [00:05:51.510]why are they gonna listen to my opinions?
- [00:05:53.090]But I just realized that over time,
- [00:05:56.750]after every interaction, I realized that each person
- [00:05:59.980]was a huge asset in making sure that all my projects
- [00:06:03.390]were able to carry out and be successful.
- [00:06:05.970]And I learned that, live in the moment of the conversation,
- [00:06:09.400]because you never know when that person's
- [00:06:11.870]gonna be an asset to you in the future,
- [00:06:13.330]and it was amazing.
- [00:06:16.110]So also like diversity, that went with awareness aspect,
- [00:06:19.640]because I was so amazed that somebody
- [00:06:22.340]from Arnold or Callaway or Sargent,
- [00:06:24.970]or whatever community I was at,
- [00:06:26.510]that they were all similar, but yet so different.
- [00:06:29.750]And it was incredible to actually
- [00:06:32.120]get to know the individuals and sit down
- [00:06:34.150]and talk with em and just to understand them,
- [00:06:37.960]and the pride that they take in their community,
- [00:06:39.240]and their family, and their values,
- [00:06:40.920]really put life in a different perspective for me.
- [00:06:45.610]Here is a video from Hailey, can I just?
- [00:06:49.945]K, no, okay.
- [00:06:55.280]Good afternoon RFI supporters.
- [00:06:57.840]My name is Hailey Womsley and I had the pleasure
- [00:07:00.360]of serving as an RFI student fellow
- [00:07:03.050]for Custard County, Nebraska this summer.
- [00:07:06.320]I'm sorry I couldn't be there in person today,
- [00:07:08.250]I'm in Alaska right now spending some time with my dad
- [00:07:10.790]before the school year starts back up again.
- [00:07:13.430]A little bit about me, I am originally
- [00:07:15.410]from Norfolk, Nebraska and I am currently
- [00:07:17.610]a junior agricultural education major here in Lincoln.
- [00:07:21.760]This summer has truly been life changing for me
- [00:07:25.420]and I've loved every second of this experience.
- [00:07:28.880]I had the pleasure of working, in my opinion,
- [00:07:31.160]one of the most beautiful places in Nebraska.
- [00:07:34.300]I got to work with and under the supervision of
- [00:07:37.370]some of the most inspirational people
- [00:07:39.700]I've ever met in my life.
- [00:07:41.550]And I got to work on projects,
- [00:07:43.110]that not only played towards my interests
- [00:07:45.460]and my passions, but also push me to become
- [00:07:49.100]a better person professionally and personally.
- [00:07:53.750]Custer County is a second home to me now.
- [00:07:56.610]Leaving at the end of the summer was really hard
- [00:07:59.328]to say goodbye for a little while.
- [00:08:03.300]I have grown in so many ways over the summer,
- [00:08:05.420]but one of the ways I feel like I have grown the most,
- [00:08:08.010]is by stepping outside of my comfort zone
- [00:08:10.490]and trying things that I never would have tried before.
- [00:08:14.780]Andrew and Amber, our lead mentors in Custer County,
- [00:08:18.210]were amazing at helping to push us outside of the nest,
- [00:08:21.390]and also help us grow to new heights.
- [00:08:24.760]I have also learned this summer
- [00:08:26.700]how to become an inclusive leader.
- [00:08:29.440]Before starting this program or any of it's training,
- [00:08:31.750]I assumed that an inclusive leader
- [00:08:33.690]was someone who didn't just define someone's leadership
- [00:08:38.130]abilities based solely on their race.
- [00:08:41.160]Well although race is a factor,
- [00:08:42.800]there are also many other factors,
- [00:08:44.550]such as how you grew up and many
- [00:08:46.750]of your life experiences thus far.
- [00:08:49.520]So one of the skills I have been working on,
- [00:08:51.590]connected to this, is learning how to utilize
- [00:08:55.540]other people's strengths and their skills,
- [00:08:57.970]so that way I can fit those, adapt those people,
- [00:09:02.160]to whatever team I am on at the time.
- [00:09:06.140]This skill is still a work in progress,
- [00:09:08.140]but this summer has been leaps and bounds
- [00:09:11.430]in helping me reach this goal,
- [00:09:13.160]being able to see the successes in other people,
- [00:09:16.270]and utilize those strengths.
- [00:09:18.820]Overall, I would highly recommend
- [00:09:20.900]the RFI student fellow program.
- [00:09:23.230]I got to work on projects that I was passionate about.
- [00:09:26.290]For example, I worked on two specific marketing projects
- [00:09:31.650]for the community of Custer County.
- [00:09:33.950]First one was I took, combined my passion for photography
- [00:09:38.330]with my work in RFI, and took some pictures
- [00:09:40.970]around Custer County of different buildings
- [00:09:42.880]and different assets that the communities
- [00:09:45.100]could use on their Facebook pages and their websites.
- [00:09:48.120]I also got to work on a couple of success stories
- [00:09:51.030]around Custer County, to tell about the awesome people,
- [00:09:54.480]that are in Custer County, and what they're doing.
- [00:09:57.450]I made so many connections with amazing people
- [00:10:00.160]in the community that are doing big things
- [00:10:02.410]in rural Nebraska.
- [00:10:04.310]Overall, this experience was absolutely amazing,
- [00:10:08.330]and I would do it again in a heartbeat if I could.
- [00:10:16.167](laughing)
- [00:10:17.830]So, looking back at our journey,
- [00:10:20.250]the RFI fellowship has taken us down
- [00:10:22.906]this amazing journey that I never thought
- [00:10:25.410]I was ever gonna get the opportunity to do.
- [00:10:27.930]And I know I can speak for Hailey and myself,
- [00:10:30.740]saying that we had so much, not only self discovery,
- [00:10:34.500]and also just the professional personal growth
- [00:10:38.470]that we would have never had if it wasn't for RFI
- [00:10:41.530]and this opportunity.
- [00:10:42.790]So one big take away, the quote that I really,
- [00:10:46.910]really set in stone into me this summer,
- [00:10:49.780]is the good old quote by the Three Musketeers,
- [00:10:52.577]"All for one and one for all."
- [00:10:55.070]Thank you.
- [00:10:59.389]Questions? (applause)
- [00:11:08.455][Male Audience Member] So how did all of the
- [00:11:11.620]student fellows across all the communities
- [00:11:14.607]stay connected with each other over the summer?
- [00:11:17.377]Can you talk about that?
- [00:11:18.210]Yeah, so we had texts goin', group chat,
- [00:11:23.800]and things like that, but one thing that,
- [00:11:26.900]our day and age, we created a Snapchat actually.
- [00:11:30.190]So a group Snapchat, and that was the best way.
- [00:11:34.150]We always seen the highs and the lows,
- [00:11:36.590]and we were there to give advice to one another.
- [00:11:40.050]If you were having a bad day, okay I'm experiencing
- [00:11:43.420]this struggle, has anybody else experienced this,
- [00:11:47.060]that you could give me what worked for you,
- [00:11:48.920]or what didn't?
- [00:11:50.990]Good old Snapchat is our best way we stayed connected,
- [00:11:53.700]and it was also a lot of good pick me ups.
- [00:11:55.830]So if one group was down, we had another group
- [00:11:58.140]to be there to pick us up.
- [00:12:11.677][Female Audience Member] As RFI goes forward,
- [00:12:13.424]and they are looking for students
- [00:12:14.938]to go, to be the next group of interns,
- [00:12:17.573]what would you say?
- [00:12:19.240]How would you guys, in this stage,
- [00:12:21.546]how do you market this?
- [00:12:23.000]Because, I've heard it repeatedly that for some,
- [00:12:27.870]that this has been kind of the best thing
- [00:12:31.900]that's happened in your college experience
- [00:12:34.220]in terms of your growth and opportunities
- [00:12:37.250]to develop yourself personally,
- [00:12:41.160]take on initiatives, and do all these things.
- [00:12:45.394]So when recruiting other students,
- [00:12:47.605]how do they do that and get the message out,
- [00:12:50.620]to say this is an opportunity
- [00:12:54.410]that all college students should have?
- [00:12:56.690]Right, definitely, so each of us have
- [00:12:59.190]a different story, a different experience,
- [00:13:00.920]that we all went through, but the best key takeaway,
- [00:13:04.020]or the advice that I would say,
- [00:13:05.360]is we all need to be, we are advocates for RFI,
- [00:13:08.460]and we need to be the one to share our story,
- [00:13:10.700]and we all take pride in the community
- [00:13:13.146]and the projects that we all did,
- [00:13:14.730]and we're walking billboards for it.
- [00:13:17.260]So whether it's social media,
- [00:13:19.350]you post a picture, whatever it is,
- [00:13:21.810]tell your friend, it's a ripple effect.
- [00:13:24.120]So never stop sharing our stories,
- [00:13:26.620]telling your friends and family,
- [00:13:28.080]to me that's the best way, but also,
- [00:13:31.308]I dunno, like a simple picture and things like that,
- [00:13:34.750]it's the way to spread the word,
- [00:13:36.670]but the one thing, the biggest marketing label,
- [00:13:39.880]I would say is, don't put a cap
- [00:13:43.210]on your growth and development in life.
- [00:13:45.530]Never think that I'm good enough,
- [00:13:47.858]I got this certificate, or I reached this goal
- [00:13:51.250]that I had of confidence or whatever it may be,
- [00:13:53.978]never stop growing and learning,
- [00:13:56.220]because you'll be surprised at
- [00:13:58.450]where life will take you, what opportunities you'll get.
- [00:14:02.600]That's what I would say, always be open.
