- [00:00:03.400]Hi, I'm Kathy Ankerson,
- [00:00:05.560]and I'd like to talk to you about something important.
- [00:00:08.800]There are so many things in this world
- [00:00:10.580]that would not have happened if it weren't for you.
- [00:00:13.320]Think about it.
- [00:00:14.550]The littlest things we do can make such an amazing impact.
- [00:00:18.750]A simple smile makes someone's day.
- [00:00:21.910]A kind gesture inspires a stranger.
- [00:00:24.960]A mentor ignites curiosity.
- [00:00:28.270]A gift opens doors and opportunities
- [00:00:30.585]and possibly changes someone's future.
- [00:00:34.920]I'm proud that so many of our alumni feel the same
- [00:00:37.684]and have made it their passion to give back
- [00:00:40.210]to the College of Architecture
- [00:00:41.740]and the future of our students and the professions.
- [00:00:45.760]I'd like to introduce you to two alumni
- [00:00:48.130]and industry leaders who are paying it forward.
- [00:00:51.280]They'll share why they feel it's important
- [00:00:53.370]to invest in the college's legacy
- [00:00:55.650]and the bright futures of our students.
- [00:00:58.800]Merle Bachman recently established
- [00:01:01.460]a healthcare professorship and was integral in supporting
- [00:01:04.840]the Healthcare Design Studio in cooperation with HDR.
- [00:01:08.752]Well, one of the reasons I started thinking about
- [00:01:11.543]donating to the College of Architecture,
- [00:01:14.610]it's been important to me that I came, you know,
- [00:01:17.520]from a small town in Nebraska
- [00:01:21.040]and had a chance to do the kind of things
- [00:01:24.343]that I have experienced and done professionally
- [00:01:28.205]largely because I got an education here in the first place.
- [00:01:32.180]So I always felt it was important to try to pass on
- [00:01:37.120]to others the opportunity and the belief
- [00:01:41.410]that just because they are from maybe a small setting
- [00:01:45.725]doesn't mean they can't compete with anyone nationally,
- [00:01:50.860]now internationally, and I've seen a lot of students
- [00:01:53.800]from this school do tremendous things
- [00:01:57.859]in now places all around the world.
- [00:02:01.261]So I wanted to continue that feeling of opportunity,
- [00:02:06.570]I guess, for students that come
- [00:02:09.000]to the University of Nebraska.
- [00:02:11.100]Scott Killinger has sponsored
- [00:02:12.690]our China Study Abroad program for more than a decade
- [00:02:16.330]and created numerous faculty fellowships.
- [00:02:19.360]For me, it's important to give back
- [00:02:20.700]because the College of Architecture
- [00:02:22.110]is one of the most important ways to link my learning
- [00:02:24.570]and my lessons in life with my working life.
- [00:02:27.460]It's also a way to continue the learning through others
- [00:02:30.770]and to how that exchange can be of benefit to others,
- [00:02:35.300]and there is an energy that's generated
- [00:02:37.210]by the collaborative nature of education.
- [00:02:39.591]We need to invest in that energy,
- [00:02:41.910]and believe me, you're investment will pay future dividends
- [00:02:45.510]to both investor and the investee,
- [00:02:47.800]and we all need to stay involved.
- [00:02:49.605]Scott and Merle are amazing,
- [00:02:52.184]but I know you might be thinking
- [00:02:53.810]college probably doesn't need my help.
- [00:02:56.980]Well, we need you now more than ever,
- [00:02:59.730]and your gift couldn't be more timely.
- [00:03:02.310]Today, I'm asking you to join us
- [00:03:04.151]in making positive and impactful change.
- [00:03:08.090]Regardless of the state's support for the university,
- [00:03:10.664]you and I expect the College of Architecture
- [00:03:13.640]to continue to provide an excellent education
- [00:03:16.500]in architecture, design, and planning.
- [00:03:19.570]So we truly need you as a partner.
- [00:03:22.360]I'm so thankful for the time, talent,
- [00:03:24.340]and treasure so many of you already give to the college.
- [00:03:27.687]What will happen if you don't give back?
- [00:03:30.167]I don't know for certain,
- [00:03:32.727]but I do know what happens when you do.
- [00:03:35.510]Please consider a gift, and join our league of heroes today.
