- [00:00:00.590]I am Joe Louis and I am an assistant professor
- [00:00:02.430]in the department of entomology and biochemistry
- [00:00:04.900]at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:00:07.480]The global population is expected to reach
- [00:00:10.060]9 billion by the year 2040,
- [00:00:12.350]and it is critical that we should
- [00:00:14.760]increase the global food production to meet our needs.
- [00:00:18.420]My research is on sorghum/insect interaction,
- [00:00:22.220]and sorghum is one of the top five cereal crops
- [00:00:25.042]grown in the world,
- [00:00:26.460]and it's predominantly grown for food, feed, and fuel.
- [00:00:29.840]But at the same time, the sorghum is also attacked by
- [00:00:32.570]different insect pests, and one being the aphids.
- [00:00:35.470]And these aphids are, you know, tiny insects
- [00:00:38.490]which uses their needle-like mouth part to consume
- [00:00:42.390]the sap and by doing so,
- [00:00:45.250]it interferes with the photosynthetic ability of the plant.
- [00:00:48.670]And also at the same time, they transmit several
- [00:00:51.970]of those plant viruses that considerably
- [00:00:55.040]reduces the yield of the plant.
- [00:00:57.380]So the crop loss due to insect infestation
- [00:00:59.350]remain as a major concern in the field of agriculture.
- [00:01:02.290]So what we are trying to understand
- [00:01:05.340]is what are those underlying genetic networks,
- [00:01:08.720]and phenotypic traits that are contributing to the
- [00:01:11.430]sorghum resistance to these sap-sucking insects.
- [00:01:15.410]Regarding the educational and outreach component
- [00:01:17.880]of the proposal,
- [00:01:19.080]and collaborating with middle school
- [00:01:21.450]and secondary school teachers,
- [00:01:23.950]I will be also collaborating with
- [00:01:25.910]a middle school in Lincoln.
- [00:01:27.520]The program is known as Visit by a Scientist program,
- [00:01:30.750]and overall, you know,
- [00:01:31.660]it will help them to have a greater appreciation
- [00:01:34.930]of these different food systems.
- [00:01:37.120]During the summer,
- [00:01:37.953]I will provide training for undergraduate students
- [00:01:41.364]from UNL also from a different institution in Texas.
- [00:01:46.020]In the department of entomology,
- [00:01:47.560]we organize an outreach educational event every year,
- [00:01:51.620]which is known as the Bug Fest.
- [00:01:53.560]And we get, you know, more than a thousand people
- [00:01:56.140]coming to this during that time,
- [00:01:58.380]and then you open up the department to the public.
- [00:02:01.740]We will explain not only what we are doing in the lab
- [00:02:04.140]and how we are doing this research
- [00:02:06.170]to make their lives much better.
- [00:02:08.162](cheerful music)
