- [00:00:10.296]Hi, this is Dawn with parent CONNECTORS, how are you?
- [00:00:13.570]Parent CONNECTORS is a Parent to Parent support program,
- [00:00:16.295]for the families of kids with emotional
- [00:00:18.810]and behavioral challenges.
- [00:00:20.680]Well, I wanted to call and check
- [00:00:22.490]and see how things were going with the new school
- [00:00:24.660]and the new placement.
- [00:00:26.690]It's really unique because parents work with other parents
- [00:00:29.620]that have been there and walked in their shoes,
- [00:00:31.920]to really help them understand what schools are expecting,
- [00:00:35.382]how to get connected to mental health services,
- [00:00:37.770]how to improve the academics for their children.
- [00:00:40.090]I wanted to check with you to see how the behaviors
- [00:00:42.925]with your son has been at home.
- [00:00:45.610]Another thing that makes parent CONNECTORS different
- [00:00:47.860]is that it's delivered entirely via the phone.
- [00:00:50.710]So parents find that this works really well
- [00:00:53.140]and they enjoy this flexible
- [00:00:54.325]way of talking with another parent.
- [00:00:57.830]Our target population for the parents CONNECTORS program,
- [00:01:01.120]of parents of children who are struggling
- [00:01:03.970]with some emotional and behavioral challenges at school,
- [00:01:06.454]at home and or in the community.
- [00:01:09.700]Potential families that we would serve
- [00:01:11.530]may have specifically Individualized Education Plans
- [00:01:15.140]in the school system.
- [00:01:16.540]They may also be struggling with symptoms of ADHD
- [00:01:21.040]or have some struggles
- [00:01:22.670]with being successful in the classroom.
- [00:01:25.060]I remember last year
- [00:01:26.140]when similar thing happened with my daughter
- [00:01:28.690]and she was sent home and I was a mess.
- [00:01:32.040]So you are doing awesome good for...
- [00:01:34.220]The parent CONNECTORS program is very unique
- [00:01:36.380]from other programs,
- [00:01:37.510]because all of us parent CONNECTORS
- [00:01:39.840]have children with IEPs as well.
- [00:01:42.018]So we get to share our own experience
- [00:01:44.970]and there's so much power behind our own stories
- [00:01:48.220]and the experiences that we have
- [00:01:49.860]and what we've been through
- [00:01:51.270]and just helping those parents to not feel so isolated
- [00:01:55.100]and helping them to see,
- [00:01:56.657]"Oh, other people have done this, I can do this too."
- [00:01:59.920]When my children first came home from school,
- [00:02:02.650]and I was told they were put on IEP,
- [00:02:05.940]it was a struggle to even figure out, you know,
- [00:02:09.170]what is this?
- [00:02:10.003]What can I do?
- [00:02:10.960]What can't I do?
- [00:02:12.160]A lot of parents, they don't know that they have a voice.
- [00:02:16.310]parent CONNECTORS breaks down the barriers between
- [00:02:19.007]parents and school.
- [00:02:21.530]It's very informative, and it's,
- [00:02:23.770]it's empowering to the parents
- [00:02:25.540]to help them empower their children.
- [00:02:28.550]Have you reached out to the therapist in regards to,
- [00:02:33.610]Parent Connector, it's me.
- [00:02:36.160]It's the person who's had experiences in the past.
- [00:02:40.760]There are so many parents who
- [00:02:43.050]are isolating themselves
- [00:02:44.990]and you know, they blame themselves.
- [00:02:47.120]I'm one of them.
- [00:02:47.953]We blame ourselves for what's going on with our youth.
- [00:02:51.310]It's a dream come true for me,
- [00:02:52.331]to be able to provide the service
- [00:02:54.860]for parents to let them know honey, you're not alone.
- [00:02:57.700]You're not by yourself.
- [00:02:59.120]I've been there, done that.
- [00:03:00.500]It'll help you connect to the school
- [00:03:02.770]in a way that you probably never thought that you could.
- [00:03:06.310]And I hear the joy in the parents voice
- [00:03:08.720]when they are connecting with the school
- [00:03:10.780]and things are going well.
- [00:03:12.790]And even when they're not going well
- [00:03:13.980]they still feel good about the road that they're on.
- [00:03:17.070]Maybe following up on the mom specifically,
- [00:03:19.530]on what is her plan for getting that meeting scheduled.
- [00:03:22.410]For me as a clinician who's done family therapy
- [00:03:25.210]and worked with adolescents with struggles in school,
- [00:03:28.670]in the community and in their families.
- [00:03:30.430]This is a piece that's always been missing.
- [00:03:33.440]Parent CONNECTORS is a deepening of the learning
- [00:03:36.870]that I think is essential for families
- [00:03:39.470]to move forward successfully
- [00:03:41.360]and for the children to be successful
- [00:03:43.660]in their school in their home and in the community.
- [00:03:47.992](upbeat music)
