- [00:00:05.210]All right, best of luck!
- [00:00:07.960]Ready, set, go!
- [00:00:10.690](upbeat music)
- [00:00:15.270]It's the National Personal Finance Challenge.
- [00:00:17.470]State champions for 21 states are gathered together
- [00:00:20.910]to form a hypothetical financial plan for a family.
- [00:00:26.020]So you mentioned the retirement
- [00:00:29.030]and aggressively funding that.
- [00:00:31.180]How much are you thinking, from an aggressive standpoint?
- [00:00:35.000]The original pool of competitors
- [00:00:36.640]from all across the nation was 18000 students,
- [00:00:39.300]so the competition is fierce.
- [00:00:41.400]So here's a brief roadmap of our presentation.
- [00:00:44.090]So, we know that it's very valuable to teach
- [00:00:46.060]these students as they are freshmen through seniors
- [00:00:48.090]in high school, about how to manage money
- [00:00:49.511]in the hopes that they'll be able to manage
- [00:00:51.670]their lifelong income to and through a secure retirement.
- [00:00:54.490]We as a team recognize that this an extremely
- [00:00:56.780]difficult step to take and we really applaud you
- [00:00:59.000]for making this step.
- [00:01:00.470]I would say this is as critical as English,
- [00:01:02.730]as critical as math education,
- [00:01:04.400]this is something students are going to use every single day
- [00:01:06.850]and every single school in the country
- [00:01:08.500]should be teaching this and should be preparing
- [00:01:10.030]their students for the world that is going
- [00:01:11.780]to face them when they become adults.
- [00:01:13.560]We're excited to participate
- [00:01:14.950]and we know that state treasurers across the country
- [00:01:17.350]have really put an emphasis on financial literacy
- [00:01:20.220]education across the country.
- [00:01:21.920]And our first place winners
- [00:01:23.500]are from the state of New York.
- [00:01:24.843](applause)
- [00:01:28.320]It was pretty crazy.
- [00:01:29.250]I mean, it was obviously a great honor to be here
- [00:01:31.260]and when we just won it was a lot of adrenalin
- [00:01:33.760]for the past couple hours of competing
- [00:01:35.410]and waiting and just thinking about it,
- [00:01:37.500]but it really paid off in the end.
- [00:01:39.440]I'm so happy for them and very proud of these boys.
- [00:01:42.920]They have worked really hard.
- [00:01:45.470]So we definitely learned a lot of skills
- [00:01:46.720]that will be useful, really, for the rest of our lives.
- [00:01:48.700]We learned just a lot of different things
- [00:01:49.960]about how to save and be fiscally responsible.
- [00:01:52.350]And we also learned that it's really, really important
- [00:01:54.430]to start saving early, even some of the prize money here,
- [00:01:56.490]I guess, we can start putting it in
- [00:01:57.490]and accumulating that compound interest.
- [00:01:59.270]The economic council made it very easy,
- [00:02:01.530]they were constantly holding our hands,
- [00:02:03.820]they were spot on answering any concerns, questions,
- [00:02:07.670]I highly recommend them, five stars.
- [00:02:10.501]It's really great to be part of this.
- [00:02:13.351](upbeat music)
