- [00:00:01.010]Hello.
- [00:00:01.920]In this video I will talk about the difference
- [00:00:04.430]between the diseases that are caused by virus and bacteria
- [00:00:09.140]and how to improve the usage of antibiotics
- [00:00:12.350]to prevent antibiotic resistance.
- [00:00:16.010]Unfortunately, in Iran,
- [00:00:18.170]there is a limited awareness and understanding
- [00:00:20.840]of antibiotic resistance
- [00:00:22.980]and their impact on human health.
- [00:00:26.350]Many of us unintentionally use the word virus and bacteria
- [00:00:31.560]interchangeably.
- [00:00:33.630]The sooner we have a better understanding of them,
- [00:00:37.030]the better decisions we can make
- [00:00:38.960]regarding the treatments we can get when we are sick.
- [00:00:44.200]Antibiotics can only work against bacteria
- [00:00:48.500]and they don't work at all against viruses.
- [00:00:53.550]Both virus and bacteria may cause diseases
- [00:00:58.050]but they do it in different ways.
- [00:01:01.610]Bacteria infections are caused by bacteria
- [00:01:05.490]and viral infections are caused viruses.
- [00:01:09.760]Therefore, taking antibiotics will not help
- [00:01:13.670]when we have viral infections.
- [00:01:17.560]They are both spread by touching, like shaking hands,
- [00:01:22.240]coughing,
- [00:01:23.600]sneezing,
- [00:01:24.930]and other ways.
- [00:01:28.150]Virus needs a host like human body
- [00:01:31.380]to make a copy of themselves for reproduction.
- [00:01:36.020]Once they've found a host,
- [00:01:37.730]they reproduce like a copy machine.
- [00:01:41.400]Diseases like cold,
- [00:01:43.620]fever,
- [00:01:44.910]chickenpox,
- [00:01:46.120]Ebola,
- [00:01:47.130]and many other diseases are caused by virus.
- [00:01:52.150]Some of the symptoms can include cough, runny nose,
- [00:01:57.250]and body aches.
- [00:02:00.010]Some of the treatments are Influenza vaccination,
- [00:02:03.660]and it is recommended to drink plenty of fluids
- [00:02:07.570]and bedrest.
- [00:02:11.220]Bacteria is a cell and doesn't need a host.
- [00:02:16.410]Not all bacteria are bad for human.
- [00:02:19.810]There are many bacteria
- [00:02:21.680]that are essential for human vitality
- [00:02:24.280]such as the bacteria in human gut
- [00:02:26.710]and in the bacteria that make yogurt.
- [00:02:30.650]Some diseases, like diarrhea and tuberculosis,
- [00:02:34.910]are caused because of bacteria.
- [00:02:38.490]Some of the treatments are taking antibiotics,
- [00:02:42.610]and it is recommended to maintain
- [00:02:44.850]a healthy diverse microbial community in your gut.
- [00:02:50.290]For taking antibiotics,
- [00:02:52.350]we need to be careful
- [00:02:53.470]about not overusage and misusage of it,
- [00:02:58.550]which may lead in spreading antibiotic-resistant genes.
- [00:03:04.150]To prevent starting antibiotic-resistant genes,
- [00:03:08.380]first we need to know
- [00:03:09.740]if our disease is caused by a virus or bacteria.
- [00:03:15.150]You as a patient
- [00:03:16.440]need to describe how you're feeling to your physician
- [00:03:19.860]and trust them for prescribing
- [00:03:21.920]or not prescribing antibiotics.
- [00:03:26.070]You might think, so what?
- [00:03:28.540]Taking antibiotics when it is not needed
- [00:03:32.400]builds up antibiotic resistance in your body,
- [00:03:37.370]and when you need it, the antibiotic will not work.
- [00:03:42.930]Antibiotics treat bacterial infection,
- [00:03:47.180]not viral infection.
- [00:03:50.280]Thank you.
