With a grant from the National Science Foundation, Professor of Computer Science and Engineering Leen-Kieat Soh trains public school teachers who seek to incorporate computer science in their classrooms.

[00:00:05.300]Today is part of the first year of a cohort of teachers
[00:00:09.010]who are going to incorporate computer science
[00:00:11.340]into their classroom in some way.
[00:00:13.080]And the grant is part of this CS for all
[00:00:16.950]from the National Science Foundation.
[00:00:19.550]So the goal is three-fold.
[00:00:21.710]The first one is
[00:00:22.720]to provide professional development for teachers.
[00:00:25.520]Second one is to try to come up with this support group,
[00:00:29.320]a network to support these teachers,
[00:00:31.440]so if they are full-time teacher from the rural schools
[00:00:34.630]or the trouble areas, can actually also participate
[00:00:37.210]with this network to share resources
[00:00:39.460]and experience expertise.
[00:00:40.920]And then the third one is to actually do the research part
[00:00:44.490]to assess and evaluate how well the courses work
[00:00:49.117]in terms of teaching these teachers
[00:00:50.620]to teach computer science.

[00:00:54.310]I'm helping set up the course,
[00:00:55.520]set up the assignments, the syllabus,
[00:00:58.960]what they'll be working on throughout the day, the schedule.
[00:01:01.400]And then after we get the results,
[00:01:03.410]I'll be working with the cohorts, find out how it went,
[00:01:06.830]what we need to change, and what we can do better next year.

[00:01:10.670]Oh man, the support from my group has been tremendous.
[00:01:15.100]We really feed off one another.
[00:01:16.950]What one person has understood, they're really good
[00:01:19.520]about sharing that with other people in the group.
[00:01:21.810]We cannot do this on an island, by ourselves,
[00:01:23.910]and the support has been fabulous.
[00:01:26.720]Teachers we teach this summer have their course created
[00:01:29.740]and developed and starting teaching
[00:01:31.350]in the fall and so forth.

[00:01:34.940]and it has the potential to be long-lasting.
