- [00:00:06.880]My name is Chris Scott,
- [00:00:08.030]I am a fifth year broadcasting student
- [00:00:10.180]here at the university.
- [00:00:11.350]I am from Omaha, Nebraska
- [00:00:13.380]and I ended up here
- [00:00:14.760]because it was far enough away from home
- [00:00:18.830]to where I still had
- [00:00:20.638]that freedom that I wanted,
- [00:00:22.180]but then it was still close enough
- [00:00:24.290]if things got a little crazy
- [00:00:25.390]I could still go home if I needed to.
- [00:00:27.639]Thank you.
- [00:00:31.890]My name is Shaundee Long
- [00:00:34.549]I am a second year political science,
- [00:00:36.880]pre-law major with a minor
- [00:00:39.120]in Native American studies and planning
- [00:00:40.490]to become a Native American attorney someday.
- [00:00:44.650]How I got here was I had recently gotten
- [00:00:48.480]the Buffet Scholarship
- [00:00:51.226]and I just suggested to go here
- [00:00:54.350]because they have a really good law program here,
- [00:00:57.930]hopefully we can stick out to the end.
- [00:01:03.160]Hello everyone, welcome
- [00:01:04.750]my name is Sky Morgan,
- [00:01:06.000]I'm Vice President of UNITE,
- [00:01:08.020]I am from Winnebago, Nebraska,
- [00:01:11.600]I am a business administration management major.
- [00:01:15.736]I chose this major,
- [00:01:16.569]I came in undecided in my first two years.
- [00:01:19.030]So I finally realized,
- [00:01:21.450]okay I'm into business,
- [00:01:23.430]I'm gonna go this route
- [00:01:24.500]and see where it can go from there.
- [00:01:26.751]I came to UNL
- [00:01:27.584]because I have a lot
- [00:01:28.417]of family in the area,
- [00:01:29.320]and I wasn't too sure how I would adjust
- [00:01:34.481]but after this first degree
- [00:01:35.314]I plan on leaving Nebraska for sure
- [00:01:37.370]but thanks for coming guys.
- [00:01:40.877]Hello my name is Angelica Solimon
- [00:01:43.406]I am the president of UNITE.
- [00:01:44.910]I'm currently a senior working
- [00:01:46.500]on my civil engineering degree in structures.
- [00:01:51.713]And how I got here is both my parents
- [00:01:53.190]came to UNL
- [00:01:54.330]and I loved the football team.
- [00:01:58.200]I've been watching them since I was in pampers.
- [00:02:00.530]I have season tickets.
- [00:02:02.100]I go every year.
- [00:02:03.840]And that's basically how I got here.
- [00:02:09.230]My name is Lucille Som-way Feather,
- [00:02:10.930]I'm originally from Newbold, Minnesota,
- [00:02:13.100]if anybody knows where's that at.
- [00:02:14.390]I am a first year criminal justice major,
- [00:02:17.500]I chose UNL
- [00:02:18.630]because I ended up receiving the Buffet
- [00:02:21.270]and also my dad wanted me to go
- [00:02:22.940]to a Big Ten school.
- [00:02:24.120]I'm the first one in my family to go
- [00:02:25.130]to college, so it's a pretty big deal.
- [00:02:27.601]What I wanna do after college
- [00:02:29.840]is a wanna be US Marshall and arrest people,
- [00:02:32.420]and travel and do things like that.
- [00:02:38.592]Hi I'm Shannon La Quant
- [00:02:39.577]and this is my fifth and final year,
- [00:02:42.790]here at UNL.
- [00:02:44.890]I'm going to school as a secondary
- [00:02:47.260]English language arts English teacher.
- [00:02:49.980]And I'm minoring in Native American studies
- [00:02:52.120]and what I hope to do with that is
- [00:02:55.970]just teach for a little well,
- [00:02:57.640]most likely in a LPS area
- [00:02:59.730]and then go
- [00:03:00.840]and get my masters in counseling
- [00:03:02.880]to be a guidance counselor
- [00:03:04.690]for Native American students on the different reservations.
- [00:03:07.580]And then, I'm from Nebraska.
- [00:03:11.020]Did I say where?
- [00:03:12.214]I'm from Niobrara, Nebraska.
- [00:03:16.515]And I came here
- [00:03:17.348]because I got the Susan Buffet
- [00:03:19.987]and I knew I wasn't going
- [00:03:20.820]to school unless I had it paid for.
- [00:03:22.890]So this is my best financial aid option.
- [00:03:28.358]Can you hear me without mic?
- [00:03:31.059]Okay I'll just start.
- [00:03:34.062]My name is Noah Keller,
- [00:03:34.895]and from Fall City Nebraska.
- [00:03:36.550]Does anybody know where Fall City's at?
- [00:03:39.530]You, okay?
- [00:03:40.550]So you understand
- [00:03:41.700]why I going to Lincoln then.
- [00:03:44.680]Fall City is a small town
- [00:03:45.850]and there's not a whole lot going on.
- [00:03:48.030]I decided to go into chemical engineering,
- [00:03:50.840]there's just a lot
- [00:03:51.673]of opportunity with that,
- [00:03:52.506]and I'm not really sure
- [00:03:53.500]what I wanna do yet.
- [00:03:55.440]I'm figuring that out as I go
- [00:03:57.050]with classes and such.
- [00:03:58.400]But I'm really excited
- [00:03:59.842]to get moving on
- [00:04:01.106]and get my bachelor's
- [00:04:03.940]and get out here.
- [00:04:08.590]I'm Nicole Rodriguez,
- [00:04:09.850]I'm from Omaha, Nebraska
- [00:04:11.430]I'm a first year psychology major
- [00:04:13.510]and I minor in Spanish.
- [00:04:15.330]I really don't know
- [00:04:16.826]what I wanna do with that
- [00:04:17.659]but I think that's okay.
- [00:04:20.570]How I got out here,
- [00:04:23.330]it was really quick decision.
- [00:04:26.510]I didn't really wanna go to UNL
- [00:04:28.880]'cause everybody that I went
- [00:04:30.860]to high school with was going there,
- [00:04:31.693]so I wanted to get away,
- [00:04:33.510]so that's how I ended up here.
- [00:04:41.379]UNITE is a group
- [00:04:43.023]for Native American students on campus
- [00:04:44.820]that come together
- [00:04:45.653]and do different events and talk
- [00:04:48.570]and see how we could make some change
- [00:04:50.260]in our community.
- [00:04:51.670]I forgot what UNITE stands for.
- [00:04:53.260]It stands for
- [00:04:55.146]the University Nebraska Inter-Tribal Exchange.
- [00:04:56.710]Not only do we do events
- [00:04:58.338]but we do have a big event
- [00:04:59.250]that we plan in the spring,
- [00:05:00.628]it's a Powwow.
- [00:05:01.710]It's honoring the graduates,
- [00:05:03.282]whether it's high school,
- [00:05:05.050]we just wanna have that type
- [00:05:07.540]of association for Powwow.
- [00:05:09.800]And then we do socials,
- [00:05:11.270]it's kind of a home away from home.
- [00:05:12.437]'Cause it's such a small group on campus,
- [00:05:14.520]and we bring everyone together.
- [00:05:16.910]We try to do monthly socials
- [00:05:18.540]but we meet every week
- [00:05:20.430]and we try to do some professional development.
- [00:05:24.690]We have an advisor who helps us,
- [00:05:27.540]who works here in the multi-cultural building.
- [00:05:31.230]And so we gather here once a week
- [00:05:33.653]and sometimes we do potlucks,
- [00:05:36.900]just different types of things.
- [00:05:46.573]I wanna talk from a freshmen perspective,
- [00:05:48.940]since it's my first time really being away from home.
- [00:05:52.178]At home I was basically one
- [00:05:53.130]of the caretakers.
- [00:05:53.963]I paid bills,
- [00:05:54.991]took care of my dad, my sister.
- [00:05:56.040]So I was so used
- [00:05:57.320]to taking care of other people.
- [00:05:59.020]When you come to college
- [00:06:00.080]you all of sudden have
- [00:06:00.970]to take care of yourself
- [00:06:01.920]which if you come from a household
- [00:06:03.920]where you're helping out a lot
- [00:06:05.090]or you have a big family
- [00:06:05.923]and you're always thinking about everybody else
- [00:06:07.887]and not yourself,
- [00:06:08.870]that could really change how you feel
- [00:06:11.288]and how you look at how school goes for you.
- [00:06:15.160]So coming into a group like UNITE,
- [00:06:17.520]and it's people who look like you,
- [00:06:19.520]think the same way as you.
- [00:06:21.030]It can give you
- [00:06:22.110]that outlook on how to feel
- [00:06:24.070]and can talk about your feelings
- [00:06:25.210]and so forth.
- [00:06:26.043]Especially homesickness, now that
- [00:06:27.470]my family is out of state,
- [00:06:28.860]I have people to go talk to
- [00:06:30.640]and that's not strictly faculty
- [00:06:33.010]or people that are in your classes.
- [00:06:35.010]You have more to talk about besides school.
- [00:06:37.380]You just have that home-away-from-home in a sense.
- [00:06:43.159]And being part of a group,
- [00:06:45.607]especially with UNITE,
- [00:06:46.670]we try to develop you professionally.
- [00:06:49.110]So when you create an events
- [00:06:50.370]you're learning all these different skills,
- [00:06:53.000]time management, learning how to use Excel,
- [00:06:57.360]different organization type thing,
- [00:07:00.023]interpersonal skills, your Facebook posts like now.
- [00:07:06.820]If you were shy,
- [00:07:08.230]you're forced to get out
- [00:07:11.311]of that bubble.
- [00:07:12.810]And that's what being a part
- [00:07:15.460]of UNITE gives you those opportunities
- [00:07:17.650]to shy away what you're afraid of.
- [00:07:29.392]A small town goes from everybody knows
- [00:07:31.770]and everybody knows everything
- [00:07:33.290]that kind of thing.
- [00:07:36.245]When you move to a big city like Lincoln,
- [00:07:39.405]you just have
- [00:07:40.238]to find your small community.
- [00:07:43.263]And I find comfort in a small town
- [00:07:44.550]even though I wanted to get out of it.
- [00:07:48.135]And I had a group of friends
- [00:07:48.968]and group of people
- [00:07:51.086]that know everybody
- [00:07:51.919]and we know everything about each other.
- [00:07:53.920]So when I wanna reach out
- [00:07:55.770]and get into that big environment,
- [00:07:57.700]I'm able to.
- [00:07:58.970]But if I wanna draw back into
- [00:08:00.570]that comfort zone of small town,
- [00:08:03.671]I can go back to that group
- [00:08:04.781]of friends that I made.
- [00:08:06.700]And that's basically how I was able
- [00:08:07.710]to transition from small town
- [00:08:09.670]to second biggest in Nebraska.
- [00:08:18.030]I'm also from a small town about 300 people.
- [00:08:23.763]And I think I love the transition
- [00:08:26.960]because I'm not a small town person,
- [00:08:29.940]I love living in Lincoln.
- [00:08:32.673]I was that type of person
- [00:08:33.886]that did everything.
- [00:08:35.668]And it was easier
- [00:08:36.501]to do everything in a small town.
- [00:08:37.750]So when I moved to Lincoln
- [00:08:38.840]there was so much for me to do,
- [00:08:41.061]what I had to deal
- [00:08:42.650]with was when marriage all of that
- [00:08:45.240]and learning how to pick and choose,
- [00:08:48.547]'cause back in Niobrara I could do this and that
- [00:08:52.131]be president of strict counsel in FELA
- [00:08:55.360]but here I can't president of multiple organizations,
- [00:08:58.810]I couldn't even be secretary
- [00:09:01.820]of multiple organizations.
- [00:09:03.730]So I really had to pick and choose
- [00:09:04.740]where my passions were.
- [00:09:05.720]And that's why I chose UNITE
- [00:09:08.446]and that's when I focused on UNITE.
- [00:09:09.770]And also it feels nice focusing on something
- [00:09:14.220]other than your school work.
- [00:09:16.040]As much as I love doing what I'm doing,
- [00:09:18.777]it's good to focus
- [00:09:19.700]on other groups and activities besides,
- [00:09:23.020]what are you reading this week for class?
- [00:09:26.638]Another thing too is
- [00:09:27.471]that there's gas stations open past 10
- [00:09:30.002]and restaurants open past 10.
- [00:09:31.732]Right, you can go get food
- [00:09:32.846]at three in the morning, it's nice.
- [00:09:33.946]Exactly.
- [00:09:35.232]To dinner or coffee.
- [00:09:46.026]So I'm not from a tribe.
- [00:09:50.062]But I have been trying
- [00:09:51.730]to learn about
- [00:09:57.550]my dad's side of the family.
- [00:09:59.928]They're supposedly part Cherokee and Chara-toss,
- [00:10:03.654]and I do a lot research on those tribes,
- [00:10:06.765]and learn about those.
- [00:10:09.457]I'm Ones-degala and De-nay.
- [00:10:14.372]I'm mixed.
- [00:10:16.080]I'm bey-ga.
- [00:10:18.421]I'm In-doy-bay tribe (mumbles)
- [00:10:21.951]I'm Poncha-say-tee.
- [00:10:24.261]I'm part of the Iowa tribe
- [00:10:25.094]of Kansas, Nebraska.
- [00:10:28.032]I'm not in a tribe.
- [00:10:30.009]I enjoy the history and everything.
- [00:10:34.386]I see the Aztec in you.
- [00:10:36.336]Aztec?
- [00:10:37.169]Yeah.
- [00:10:38.133](panel laughing)
- [00:10:39.910]With our group
- [00:10:40.743]we don't just limited to just Native,
- [00:10:43.980]because many-a-poalo takes a lot of people.
- [00:10:47.290]And so when we have people like Chris
- [00:10:49.063]and we have people like Nicole
- [00:10:50.520]or that they some type of background
- [00:10:52.330]or they just wanna help,
- [00:10:54.030]that's important to us too.
- [00:10:55.130]And they also bring different aspects too,
- [00:10:58.116]we're open to all that,
- [00:10:59.830]we-like-be.
- [00:11:01.630]But we really do try
- [00:11:03.390]to get the Natives here to come
- [00:11:05.630]to our group.
- [00:11:06.500]In that first year,
- [00:11:07.580]I can tell how sometimes I think about my first year,
- [00:11:10.770]I was in and out with UNITE,
- [00:11:12.231]you know, do I have time to go?
- [00:11:15.388]Do I want to go?
- [00:11:16.540]And then once I finally make that commitment,
- [00:11:18.560]oh wow, I actually have an executive position,
- [00:11:20.550]and I need to this.
- [00:11:21.667]I need to add this to my plan
- [00:11:22.850]or I need to help in some kind of way,
- [00:11:24.610]and then you feel good.
- [00:11:26.890]It really looks good on resumes too.
- [00:11:29.827]I'm sorry go ahead.
- [00:11:30.660]Go ahead.
- [00:11:31.753]You really don't think about your resume
- [00:11:33.420]but those are some good bullet points
- [00:11:36.296]to add on there like
- [00:11:37.882]planning, organization, communicating.
- [00:11:41.480]All things that later on
- [00:11:42.902]when you're trying to get that job,
- [00:11:44.743]okay I've had experience
- [00:11:45.672]with that in college,
- [00:11:48.005]you gotta think about that too.
- [00:11:49.960]And it's not just this group,
- [00:11:51.622]there's other groups too
- [00:11:52.527]who are on campus.
- [00:11:53.360]He's the president of APU
- [00:11:55.115]which the African People's Union.
- [00:11:58.770]And then there's MASA,
- [00:12:00.278]which is a Mexican American.
- [00:12:01.510]You'll honestly find a group
- [00:12:03.661]of people that you like,
- [00:12:04.794]that generally chill-like comfortable with,
- [00:12:07.292]and you just stick to the group.
- [00:12:09.000]My first year coming in,
- [00:12:10.470]I was shy,
- [00:12:11.950]I was timid.
- [00:12:12.783]I didn't really know what to do
- [00:12:13.920]so I heard about UNITE.
- [00:12:18.030]These two here are actually my cousins
- [00:12:21.467]and they're like,
- [00:12:22.300]come to UNITE,
- [00:12:23.133]come do this with us,
- [00:12:23.966]come do this,
- [00:12:24.799]and get to meet these cool people.
- [00:12:25.980]And I wasn't really that person,
- [00:12:27.385]I didn't want to stick out.
- [00:12:30.180]I just went to class,
- [00:12:31.790]went to eat,
- [00:12:32.950]go to the library
- [00:12:33.783]and went home.
- [00:12:34.616]That's how my first year went.
- [00:12:36.067]Until the second semester,
- [00:12:37.630]I started getting interested into different
- [00:12:38.933]RSOs on campus.
- [00:12:41.320]And that's when I started to find
- [00:12:43.410]who I actually wanted
- [00:12:44.470]to be a part of
- [00:12:45.303]and what community I actually felt comfortable with.
- [00:12:48.863]And people I wanted
- [00:12:49.900]to develop friendships with.
- [00:12:54.870]Later on I started eventually coming into UNITE
- [00:12:58.252]and so it was actually really cool.
- [00:13:00.816]I'm like who I am,
- [00:13:03.406]and I like other peoples,
- [00:13:05.290]how other communities are on campus.
- [00:13:07.337]And we also do group collaboration sometimes
- [00:13:09.417]with the other groups like socials
- [00:13:12.280]or we need some volunteers for events
- [00:13:14.823]or they need volunteers,
- [00:13:15.890]we help them out too,
- [00:13:16.723]so it's flexible.
- [00:13:27.060]I've always wanted to become a lawyer,
- [00:13:30.247]I known about it since I was in the fourth grade,
- [00:13:33.916]and I made the decision then
- [00:13:35.445]that I wanted to become a lawyer.
- [00:13:37.449]I wanted to give back
- [00:13:38.282]to my community,
- [00:13:39.507]help my people,
- [00:13:41.550]it's just not my people in general,
- [00:13:43.720]anyone that needs help
- [00:13:46.023]and again for reservations
- [00:13:47.650]because that's where I came from.
- [00:13:51.687]And my transfer from the reservation
- [00:13:54.060]to the university,
- [00:13:55.780]I didn't go to school on the reservation
- [00:13:57.515]I went to South Sioux,
- [00:13:59.357]but the transfer
- [00:14:00.560]from the reservation
- [00:14:01.800]to here was a lot different.
- [00:14:05.240]I didn't know how to co-op,
- [00:14:08.884]I don't know how to say it.
- [00:14:12.434]Adjust, sorry.
- [00:14:15.013]I didn't know how to adjust
- [00:14:15.980]to the community.
- [00:14:16.878]It was big, so I just wanted to do
- [00:14:22.725]like how I was on the reservation
- [00:14:24.838]but I couldn't do that
- [00:14:25.868]because there so many things to do here.
- [00:14:27.955]I was okay,
- [00:14:28.870]I wanna do this,
- [00:14:29.703]I wanna do this.
- [00:14:30.828]I was running around the first semester.
- [00:14:33.416]I don't know how to make friends
- [00:14:34.967]and I don't approach people
- [00:14:36.335]'cause making friends was honestly
- [00:14:37.951]the hardest thing here.
- [00:14:38.969]But once you found a group of people
- [00:14:41.560]mainly the multi-cultural aspect
- [00:14:45.290]of the university was majority
- [00:14:47.540]of my friends.
- [00:14:49.460]It broke me to more outspoken
- [00:14:54.014]and be not as shy as I was the first year.
- [00:14:57.783]I would say I'm the complete opposite,
- [00:15:00.577]I came from Albuquerque, New Mexico
- [00:15:03.291]and coming to here,
- [00:15:04.124]this is a small city for me.
- [00:15:06.726]Go home.
- [00:15:08.810]This was a small city for me.
- [00:15:10.090]Whatever we small-people.
- [00:15:12.173]So the adjustment was a culture shock
- [00:15:14.226]'cause I was I so used to seeing brown people everywhere,
- [00:15:18.720]when I got here,
- [00:15:20.431]I knew Sky because she was my cousin,
- [00:15:23.417]and she was,
- [00:15:24.250]Come to UNITE,
- [00:15:25.083]come to UNITE.
- [00:15:25.916]So what honestly led
- [00:15:26.749]to me going to UNITE was I got
- [00:15:29.930]to meet our advisor,
- [00:15:31.570]her was Amanda Ponce.
- [00:15:33.740]And I have woman crush on her.
- [00:15:38.921]So the thing about joining groups is
- [00:15:39.790]you get to find mentors
- [00:15:41.310]and people to look up to.
- [00:15:43.347]And that was the biggest thing
- [00:15:44.180]when I joined UNITE.
- [00:15:46.044]And she now works at, somewhere?
- [00:15:49.230]Metro Community College.
- [00:15:50.631]Metro Community College in Omaha.
- [00:15:53.206]And I'm a part of a sorority
- [00:15:55.971]but she got me to join the sorority.
- [00:16:00.100]Coming to find out she was the founder of our sorority.
- [00:16:02.892]Lambda Theta Nu Sorority Incorporated.
- [00:16:05.180]It's a Latina-based sorority
- [00:16:07.240]but that's probably it makes sense
- [00:16:10.560]'cause I came from New Mexico
- [00:16:11.765]and I joined a Latina sorority,
- [00:16:12.740]so it kind of makes sense.
- [00:16:14.140]I felt close to Mexican culture
- [00:16:17.550]as well as my Native culture
- [00:16:19.334]'cause I always try
- [00:16:21.830]to practice my Native culture.
- [00:16:25.880]Just joining something you make connections automatically.
- [00:16:30.190]They might be little things,
- [00:16:32.340]just somebody to study with
- [00:16:34.689]and then things that leads
- [00:16:35.877]to more people.
- [00:16:37.690]UNITE is a good start.
- [00:16:39.256]It will help you find all the people you need.
- [00:16:41.330]Help you with your resources,
- [00:16:43.742]if you need help with financial aid,
- [00:16:44.890]we'll walk you over to the office,
- [00:16:46.640]that type of thing.
- [00:16:48.120]If you do end up coming here,
- [00:16:49.860]look for our faces.
- [00:16:51.530]Or ask one of your advisors,
- [00:16:54.220]hey I do I get a hold of UNITE?
- [00:16:55.850]And we're willing to help you
- [00:16:58.022]throughout your transition to here.
- [00:17:01.520]Also the same,
- [00:17:02.353]I came from Minnesota which is a big city
- [00:17:04.220]coming to Omaha.
- [00:17:06.090]I graduated from Omaha,
- [00:17:07.200]so it was a big transition with that.
- [00:17:09.606]If you've ever been a city
- [00:17:11.651]that's really slow
- [00:17:12.484]where Minneapolis is a big city.
- [00:17:13.660]And as well UNITE,
- [00:17:15.190]I went through an identity crisis,
- [00:17:17.522]back home Native life is just la-gone
- [00:17:22.386]all the bad things,
- [00:17:24.260]that's wrong with reservations
- [00:17:26.040]and things like that.
- [00:17:27.490]I always have been looking for something
- [00:17:29.863]to show the better side
- [00:17:31.280]of being Native
- [00:17:32.150]and all the happy things
- [00:17:33.373]that we accomplish in our history
- [00:17:35.730]and all of that stuff.
- [00:17:36.563]Because back it home it's always negative
- [00:17:38.076]negative, negative and I don't
- [00:17:40.330]really get exposure to that.
- [00:17:41.340]So UNITE helped me looked at being Native
- [00:17:43.960]at a different light instead
- [00:17:45.160]of being negative about it.
- [00:17:49.904]For me I was coming here,
- [00:17:52.140]it definitely it was a culture shock for me
- [00:17:54.430]because I came from Omaha
- [00:17:55.840]and I was at a lot of schools
- [00:17:57.596]where there were a lot of people
- [00:17:58.429]that looks like me,
- [00:17:59.540]they talk like me,
- [00:18:00.420]did similar thing that I did.
- [00:18:02.953]And then I came here
- [00:18:04.861]and definitely was the polar opposite.
- [00:18:08.970]So really finding a place
- [00:18:10.410]where I belong on campus
- [00:18:11.930]was hard at first
- [00:18:13.217]and so for about
- [00:18:16.847]two and half to three years
- [00:18:19.350]of my college years,
- [00:18:20.183]I kept myself a-lack
- [00:18:22.070]was really like high school.
- [00:18:25.420]So then I ended up finding a multi-cultural center
- [00:18:29.290]I started getting involved
- [00:18:30.450]with a lot of organizations there.
- [00:18:33.430]And one of the organizations I heard about was UNITE.
- [00:18:35.570]Everyone was talking about UNITE.
- [00:18:39.177]The community time it sells,
- [00:18:41.826]all these other cool things,
- [00:18:43.031]Powwow things like that.
- [00:18:44.296]I was like,
- [00:18:45.129]well what's that?
- [00:18:46.420]Where do they meet regularly?
- [00:18:47.777]So when I finally got the chance to go
- [00:18:50.090]to my first UNITE meeting,
- [00:18:53.340]I came in and decided
- [00:18:54.930]that it was this small room,
- [00:18:57.320]everyones just staring at you,
- [00:18:58.767]and you're staring at everyone else.
- [00:19:01.052](panel and crowd laughing)
- [00:19:02.319]We say hello.
- [00:19:03.810]We just don't stare at you.
- [00:19:07.820]They got me out my comfort zone a little bit
- [00:19:11.093]and have me introduce myself to everyone.
- [00:19:12.670]They threw me right into the fire,
- [00:19:14.980]okay this is what we're working on
- [00:19:18.025]and how big of a role do you feel like taking?
- [00:19:22.598]'Cause they really want
- [00:19:24.612]to let me get involved immediately.
- [00:19:27.900]I really appreciated that
- [00:19:28.950]because it not only helped
- [00:19:30.870]to learn about Native culture
- [00:19:32.137]but it also made me feel
- [00:19:35.482]I was participating
- [00:19:36.315]and bringing something to the group
- [00:19:37.500]as opposed to just sitting there
- [00:19:39.548]and not doing anything
- [00:19:41.342]and I've been a part of UNITE ever since.
- [00:19:42.820]And I like every second of it.
- [00:19:45.991]It's also worth it.
- [00:19:47.988](audience laughing)
- [00:19:54.848]So when I first came to campus
- [00:19:55.943]I was a part of two groups
- [00:19:58.230]before I got here.
- [00:19:59.063]One was a learning community for engineers,
- [00:20:02.180]so it put me on a floor
- [00:20:03.480]of other engineers.
- [00:20:05.236]So the first two semesters,
- [00:20:07.633]we'd be able to do all the calculus's,
- [00:20:09.310]the physics, the chemistries together.
- [00:20:11.470]And then other one was Oasis
- [00:20:12.860]that I got put with.
- [00:20:15.830]Those are the only two that I stuck with
- [00:20:17.590]all the way through
- [00:20:18.423]because I felt the most welcomed through it all.
- [00:20:22.315]And even learning team,
- [00:20:23.148]it got over after a year.
- [00:20:24.750]I'm still with Oasis
- [00:20:25.780]and I go to talk
- [00:20:26.640]to Karen all the time,
- [00:20:27.760]she's my advisor.
- [00:20:29.950]There's just so many groups on campus
- [00:20:31.630]that help you feel more involved.
- [00:20:33.690]I got connected to Gabe
- [00:20:36.840]through one of my other scholarships.
- [00:20:39.492]And funny story actually,
- [00:20:41.430]he set up meeting
- [00:20:43.870]so I can go eat
- [00:20:45.644]with Dr. Cornelius
- [00:20:46.477]and Dr. Rol-lette himself,
- [00:20:49.440]they setup for this date was
- [00:20:52.400]the day of Kim Fletcher's.
- [00:20:57.330]It wasn't until later in the day.
- [00:20:58.730]So I went to class
- [00:20:59.740]and in pajamas with shorts underneath
- [00:21:02.010]and on a hoodie.
- [00:21:03.290]I get a call from Professor Cornelius,
- [00:21:05.260]hey you ready to go eat?
- [00:21:06.710]I'm like,
- [00:21:07.660]Are you kidding me?
- [00:21:09.789](crowd laughing)
- [00:21:10.622]I wasn't kidding.
- [00:21:11.940]I look over to my buddy
- [00:21:14.442]who I went to class with,
- [00:21:15.275]I was like,
- [00:21:16.547]can you take my stuff back after lecture?
- [00:21:17.800]So with 150 people
- [00:21:19.570]to beat towards the front,
- [00:21:20.830]I stand up in pajamas
- [00:21:22.987]and a hoodie
- [00:21:23.820]and just squeeze all the way out
- [00:21:26.270]and then leave.
- [00:21:27.740]This is my first meeting him
- [00:21:28.970]and I brought my suit up
- [00:21:30.420]and everything to make a good first impression.
- [00:21:32.890]And of course I have to meet him in pajamas.
- [00:21:37.697]And then I met with Dr. I-lette
- [00:21:40.310]and then we went to Lazal-lus right?
- [00:21:43.000]A nicer restaurant
- [00:21:44.690]and I walk in with pajamas
- [00:21:47.067]and a hoodie.
- [00:21:48.359](audience laughing)
- [00:21:49.630]And it was a great time
- [00:21:50.990]and they didn't say anything about me wearing pajamas.
- [00:21:54.020]I knew that they thought
- [00:21:55.170]something about me wearing pajamas.
- [00:21:57.027]Now I do.
- [00:21:58.454](audience laughing)
- [00:22:02.262]But even after that,
- [00:22:03.860]still keep emailing me,
- [00:22:06.710]keeps checking up on me.
- [00:22:09.330]I still feel welcomed
- [00:22:10.630]by them even though
- [00:22:11.800]their first impression is this freshmen
- [00:22:14.220]college kid in pajamas.
- [00:22:16.840]Not very professional
- [00:22:17.810]but the organization here will make you feel welcome.
- [00:22:22.290]They are gonna help you succeed.
- [00:22:24.210]Every college is gonna say
- [00:22:25.550]come on in,
- [00:22:26.610]we're gonna help you out,
- [00:22:27.720]we'll make sure you get it all.
- [00:22:29.390]Here I know for sure from experience
- [00:22:31.640]that they have the groups
- [00:22:32.760]that will get you through.
- [00:22:36.790]To add on to that,
- [00:22:37.840]being in UNITE
- [00:22:38.931]if you're not a very outgoing person,
- [00:22:41.300]for me it's very easy
- [00:22:42.910]to talk to people
- [00:22:44.434]but if you have that fear
- [00:22:45.267]of getting yourself out there,
- [00:22:46.510]UNITE is a good starting point.
- [00:22:48.060]I'm also part of the Barbell club,
- [00:22:50.310]also Power lifting club,
- [00:22:51.650]I lift weights with my partner over there.
- [00:22:54.010]So being able to be in UNITE
- [00:22:56.330]if you don't have confidence like I said,
- [00:22:58.500]it can help you build your confidence
- [00:23:00.190]and then also branch yourself out
- [00:23:01.670]to different clubs.
- [00:23:03.254]It's like cooking club, Powwow thing
- [00:23:04.320]all that stuff.
- [00:23:05.410]And then once you start building your resume like that,
- [00:23:07.233]then it's really easy
- [00:23:08.180]for you to get that job that you want.
- [00:23:11.754]So got that relationship before it.
- [00:23:12.680]My advice to you guys is to get involved.
- [00:23:15.550]When I came here I was scared.
- [00:23:18.123]I didn't wanna do anything,
- [00:23:20.230]I didn't wanna make friends,
- [00:23:22.090]no thanks.
- [00:23:23.760]But she messaged me,
- [00:23:25.410]come to UNITE.
- [00:23:27.060]It was our first day
- [00:23:28.090]and I walked in
- [00:23:29.127]and I'm like,
- [00:23:29.960]oh my god.
- [00:23:30.793]I get so nervous,
- [00:23:32.750]I don't like talking to people.
- [00:23:33.740]But my advice is to get involved
- [00:23:35.700]and it will be hard,
- [00:23:38.393]but it's super easy like he said.
- [00:23:39.570]There are so many groups
- [00:23:41.497]that will reach out to you.
- [00:23:43.470]And it's just you have
- [00:23:45.708]to be the one go.
- [00:23:46.750]And it took for me to go
- [00:23:51.042]but I would say get involved.
- [00:23:52.900]That's how you get to meet new friends
- [00:23:54.427]and build relationships with everybody.
- [00:23:57.100]I noticed that a lot recent business administration
- [00:24:00.847]in our business route
- [00:24:01.680]so you're going that second year,
- [00:24:03.840]I'm gonna be going a full year
- [00:24:04.970]for business still
- [00:24:12.993]I've had some classes in a community college
- [00:24:15.160]for the summer time
- [00:24:16.260]so I know how small they are.
- [00:24:18.803]And I also went to a small school
- [00:24:19.860]but even lived in Michigan
- [00:24:21.507]and I went to a huge school.
- [00:24:23.130]So I got both sides of the spectrum.
- [00:24:26.280]And then coming here it was a transition
- [00:24:29.230]but at the same time it wasn't really.
- [00:24:32.408]Sitting the lecture hall
- [00:24:34.440]sometimes for microeconomics you'll have 200
- [00:24:38.150]something kids in there.
- [00:24:39.830]At first it's a little bit scary.
- [00:24:42.980]But the things that the teachers do
- [00:24:44.720]is they post their office hours.
- [00:24:46.410]And me, I see that,
- [00:24:48.260]okay I'm gonna go meet my teacher,
- [00:24:50.000]'cause they can put my name to a face.
- [00:24:55.639]If I'm struggling with something
- [00:24:56.900]I would definitely go there
- [00:24:58.210]and they have peer tutors.
- [00:25:01.530]And I take advantage of that
- [00:25:02.760]because some of that stuff to me
- [00:25:04.298]doesn't come easy like economics.
- [00:25:06.770]Yes I'm a business major,
- [00:25:07.870]do I like it?
- [00:25:08.970]It's okay that's not really my focus,
- [00:25:10.862]I'm a management more people,
- [00:25:11.695]face to face communication type person.
- [00:25:14.930]When I have those resources,
- [00:25:16.650]I would take advantage of those.
- [00:25:17.540]And so when you do come here,
- [00:25:19.050]when you are in class
- [00:25:20.960]or wherever you go take advantage
- [00:25:22.540]of the office hours
- [00:25:24.470]and meeting with your professor
- [00:25:26.137]and show up.
- [00:25:27.500]They like that 'cause you have to sit there
- [00:25:29.470]for the entire way so.
- [00:25:32.390]A lot of people told me
- [00:25:34.275]that they didn't like UNL
- [00:25:35.510]because the professors didn't care about you,
- [00:25:38.470]the lectures are too big,
- [00:25:40.190]this and that.
- [00:25:41.990]Those are the same people
- [00:25:43.170]that go to the lectures.
- [00:25:45.100]Don't raise their hand ask a question
- [00:25:46.680]during a lecture.
- [00:25:47.720]And don't go to the office hours.
- [00:25:50.191]Those professor are there to help you,
- [00:25:52.890]they have a lot of people going through
- [00:25:55.020]like my gen chem lecture was 150 people
- [00:25:58.640]for eight sections
- [00:26:01.183]so there's a few professors
- [00:26:03.170]with a lot of kids.
- [00:26:04.330]And if you go talk them,
- [00:26:05.490]you got talk
- [00:26:06.323]to their TA's and everything
- [00:26:07.156]they are willing to help you.
- [00:26:08.805]You just have to be willing
- [00:26:09.778]to go get it,
- [00:26:10.611]like she said.
- [00:26:11.864]You had a question.
- [00:26:21.463]Mine was where to study.
- [00:26:25.249]So I would just go the reservation,
- [00:26:26.906]like I said I went to school in Michigan.
- [00:26:28.900]On the reservation
- [00:26:30.050]when I went to school,
- [00:26:30.883]sometimes I would go home
- [00:26:32.233]and not do homework,
- [00:26:33.890]I keep slacking and stuff.
- [00:26:35.167]But in Michigan,
- [00:26:36.250]I adjusted a little bit.
- [00:26:37.590]But when I came here,
- [00:26:38.990]there's so much different sets to do.
- [00:26:40.160]I have class at for an hour
- [00:26:42.090]and 15 minutes.
- [00:26:42.923]I have the rest of the day, now what?
- [00:26:44.580]Netflix?
- [00:26:45.413]No, I really had to adjust
- [00:26:47.400]and come up with,
- [00:26:48.530]okay I need to do this.
- [00:26:49.877]I need to study,
- [00:26:50.710]I need to make a grade.
- [00:26:51.880]Once it clicked in my mind
- [00:26:53.780]that this money,
- [00:26:55.410]whether it's financial aid, scholarship
- [00:26:57.130]is real money,
- [00:26:58.050]I'm paying for this class
- [00:27:01.188]that I'm sitting in this lecture
- [00:27:02.435]and I'm gonna check my phone.
- [00:27:03.268]Wait what am I doing?
- [00:27:04.140]I'm paying for this,
- [00:27:04.973]I'm wasting money.
- [00:27:05.806]I'm gonna be having
- [00:27:06.740]to be paying debt later on.
- [00:27:08.330]Once that clicked in my mind
- [00:27:10.120]I had to change my thinking towards studying.
- [00:27:13.200]I needed to learn how to study.
- [00:27:15.630]Going off of that,
- [00:27:16.463]you have so much time.
- [00:27:18.020]Being a freshmen,
- [00:27:19.250]we have our classes,
- [00:27:20.260]you have your homework.
- [00:27:21.520]And then you have five hours til you go to sleep.
- [00:27:24.700]And there's so many people trying
- [00:27:26.240]to pull you,
- [00:27:27.073]let's go out,
- [00:27:27.906]let's do this, let's do this.
- [00:27:29.739]And you have to sit there
- [00:27:30.572]and really choose
- [00:27:31.405]what you want to do.
- [00:27:32.238]Do you wanna sit there
- [00:27:33.071]and prepare yourself for that exam?
- [00:27:33.904]Or do you wanna go out to dinner,
- [00:27:35.260]whatever and waste money?
- [00:27:37.110]Also going back to that introduction,
- [00:27:38.950]my family has moved out of state,
- [00:27:41.920]and I come from a household
- [00:27:42.910]where I was paying bills,
- [00:27:44.360]I was taking care of my siblings,
- [00:27:45.630]taking care of my parents.
- [00:27:47.060]So coming here
- [00:27:47.893]and having all
- [00:27:48.790]that time to focus on yourself,
- [00:27:50.260]you discover who you really are
- [00:27:52.310]but also that brings up issues
- [00:27:53.900]within yourself that you might
- [00:27:55.860]have never experienced before.
- [00:27:57.390]And it's really hard for you.
- [00:27:59.092]You might sit there
- [00:28:00.110]and breakdown and cry,
- [00:28:00.943]I know I've had a lot of crying sessions
- [00:28:03.841]and this first semester of college.
- [00:28:04.980]So it's okay to cry,
- [00:28:07.785]it's alright.
- [00:28:10.212]And your first semester at the university level like this
- [00:28:12.700]especially if you're from a small town,
- [00:28:15.170]you're really gonna discover
- [00:28:16.330]who you are as a person
- [00:28:17.163]and go through the emotional roller coaster
- [00:28:19.530]that everyone talks about in school.
- [00:28:22.331]That's the biggest problem I had to deal with.
- [00:28:24.313]For me it's just taking advantage
- [00:28:26.760]of your resources
- [00:28:28.499]that you have.
- [00:28:30.110]And also of taking care of yourself.
- [00:28:31.890]Because you get really stressed.
- [00:28:33.625]I'm not (mumbles) you guys.
- [00:28:35.255]You get really stressed
- [00:28:36.530]and still I'm not adjusted yet.
- [00:28:38.780]Like Sky said,
- [00:28:40.640]I don't know how to study.
- [00:28:43.747]For some classes I get a couple attempts
- [00:28:47.360]to take an exam,
- [00:28:49.145]and I kid you not last night
- [00:28:52.228]I was up really really late.
- [00:28:54.549]I'm gonna get this exam right,
- [00:28:58.670]blah, blah, blah.
- [00:29:00.058]I got the same exact score
- [00:29:01.240]than my first time.
- [00:29:02.450]And it was really disappointing
- [00:29:04.243]but there so many resources
- [00:29:06.476]that you can get.
- [00:29:07.459]There's writing centers,
- [00:29:08.292]there's math centers, everything.
- [00:29:09.650]And if you're failing,
- [00:29:11.509]there are people there to help you.
- [00:29:13.187]And they also have support services
- [00:29:15.676]for first generation students.
- [00:29:17.440]I even utilize that with calculus.
- [00:29:21.781]I needed help that.
- [00:29:23.816]I think what I did do was I adjusted
- [00:29:26.890]the time I went to sleep.
- [00:29:28.850]I'll wake up way earlier than I'm used to.
- [00:29:30.900]I go to bed about 11,
- [00:29:32.937]that's early to me so that helped me.
- [00:29:36.013]I think my biggest thing was self-care.
- [00:29:38.670]Education is my life,
- [00:29:41.440]literally it is my life.
- [00:29:42.770]That's all I do is
- [00:29:44.420]study, do homework,
- [00:29:45.541]study, do homework,
- [00:29:46.720]study, do homework.
- [00:29:47.810]And what one thing
- [00:29:49.445]that I enjoy doing is working out.
- [00:29:53.058]So at the time I would literally go
- [00:29:55.504]at 11 to 12.
- [00:29:56.600]And that's not healthy
- [00:29:59.107]or I just would miss meals.
- [00:30:00.510]So when you come to school,
- [00:30:01.910]make sure you plan that out.
- [00:30:03.253]Plan your meals out.
- [00:30:04.440]Because I would literally not eat.
- [00:30:08.100]Because I want to study
- [00:30:09.630]and do my homework.
- [00:30:11.420]And that's not very healthy,
- [00:30:13.890]it took a toll on me
- [00:30:15.244]because I was getting sick every semester.
- [00:30:17.350]I got bronchitis,
- [00:30:19.320]all of that stuff.
- [00:30:20.550]I got a flu.
- [00:30:23.079]You know taking care
- [00:30:23.912]of yourself is very important.
- [00:30:24.990]And always planning at least an hour
- [00:30:26.880]to relieve your stress.
- [00:30:30.580]For me my biggest struggle in college was that
- [00:30:36.676]it was tough transition
- [00:30:39.050]into the classrooms here.
- [00:30:41.455]Coming from high school I had
- [00:30:44.700]that mentality of it was super easy,
- [00:30:46.630]I really didn't have to try very hard.
- [00:30:48.071]And I living the life on the high road
- [00:30:49.753]and what not.
- [00:30:51.348]But then you come to college
- [00:30:52.665]and then your struggling just
- [00:30:53.498]to get a C or a B,
- [00:30:56.099]that's perfectly okay,
- [00:30:58.603]at first it's a shock
- [00:31:00.115]but eventually it's perfectly okay
- [00:31:01.220]to struggle in classes.
- [00:31:02.990]Because there are tons
- [00:31:03.870]of resources here to help you.
- [00:31:06.604]Give you the support that you need.
- [00:31:09.560]Being able to take advantage
- [00:31:11.750]of all those resources.
- [00:31:14.700]And overall reaching out
- [00:31:16.800]when I needed help,
- [00:31:19.150]that was really something
- [00:31:20.020]that helped out a lot.
- [00:31:20.853]I know a lot of people don't really like
- [00:31:22.880]to reach out
- [00:31:23.770]when they need help sometimes.
- [00:31:27.682]And guys it's definitely okay
- [00:31:29.140]to reach out
- [00:31:29.973]when you need help.
- [00:31:31.280]Never feel like it's not okay to have
- [00:31:34.265]to do everything alone.
- [00:31:35.645]I really need
- [00:31:36.478]that help some point in my life.
- [00:31:39.002]And that one helped to really
- [00:31:41.008]be the difference
- [00:31:42.752]of going up to here
- [00:31:43.623]and going even higher.
- [00:31:45.253]Like I said,
- [00:31:46.086]crying is very good.
- [00:31:48.237]Let it out.
- [00:31:51.387]Let it out.
- [00:31:53.153]I think my biggest challenge was my first year,
- [00:31:55.810]I had different challenges.
- [00:31:57.990]My first year was finding friends.
- [00:31:59.970]Finding people I can talk to
- [00:32:01.539]and share the same perspectives as you.
- [00:32:06.569]They're my family,
- [00:32:07.570]but my family was culture-wise.
- [00:32:10.940]I went to college all the time,
- [00:32:13.348]I wanted to go college
- [00:32:15.032]and now I'm in college.
- [00:32:16.290]I had to stop doing that
- [00:32:18.090]and people didn't share the same perspectives
- [00:32:20.480]like I'd sit in my poli-sci class
- [00:32:22.500]or my sociology class.
- [00:32:27.658]My perspective, my views of how I thought
- [00:32:30.310]was way different
- [00:32:31.143]from everyone else thought.
- [00:32:32.560]I didn't feel comfortable
- [00:32:34.259]within those classes.
- [00:32:35.950]But like they said,
- [00:32:37.440]go to the TA
- [00:32:38.870]or go to the professor,
- [00:32:40.120]talk to them.
- [00:32:42.011]My recent biggest one was when my professor
- [00:32:46.220]for a sociology class talked about
- [00:32:48.717]how Native Americans,
- [00:32:49.770]how a lot of us don't go
- [00:32:51.289]to college anymore.
- [00:32:52.153]Because we don't have real same perspective
- [00:32:55.037]as everyone else,
- [00:32:55.870]that's why we don't go here.
- [00:32:57.635]I was like,
- [00:32:58.468]that's totally wrong.
- [00:32:59.434]I had to speak out in class
- [00:33:00.770]because it was heartbreaking
- [00:33:04.070]to all those who are quiet,
- [00:33:04.903]and the numbers are so low.
- [00:33:06.700]Yeah I guess that's true in some aspect
- [00:33:09.620]but have you ever thought outside sources?
- [00:33:13.520]how we don't have a good education system.
- [00:33:17.395]Or other things on the reservation
- [00:33:20.310]that could admit to kids not going
- [00:33:23.650]to bigger universities.
- [00:33:25.390]And he's like,
- [00:33:26.230]All they go to is
- [00:33:28.059]to a community colleges.
- [00:33:29.209]I'm like, no that's not true.
- [00:33:31.305]They have been.
- [00:33:32.138]So prove them wrong.
- [00:33:33.270]That's what I was trying to say,
- [00:33:35.437]I'm a Native American.
- [00:33:37.850]I'm sitting in this lecture
- [00:33:38.683]with 100 plus kids in here.
- [00:33:40.482]And I'm talking about
- [00:33:42.140]how to me as Native Americans we're
- [00:33:44.950]still trying to prove people wrong
- [00:33:46.710]each and everyday
- [00:33:48.262]because it's hard to see the parts
- [00:33:51.270]they already show on the slides
- [00:33:54.020]because it is kind of true.
- [00:33:54.853]The percentage here is low for universities,
- [00:33:56.828]and we're trying
- [00:33:57.661]to make a difference on campus.
- [00:33:59.357]We're still trying
- [00:34:00.190]to identify Native American here.
- [00:34:02.856]It's just different things like that,
- [00:34:04.189]my challenge was finding people
- [00:34:06.388]that I can actually relate to.
- [00:34:08.223]My second challenge for this year is probably
- [00:34:12.707]having the time to balance things out.
- [00:34:15.270]I'm honestly, I'm in a lot of boards right now.
- [00:34:19.867]Having the time to do different things
- [00:34:21.390]is hard for me.
- [00:34:24.170]And then also
- [00:34:26.060]for my Intro to Law class,
- [00:34:27.760]my teacher knows me by face.
- [00:34:30.990]'Cause I remember the first day,
- [00:34:31.830]I said, my name is Shaun-dee,
- [00:34:33.903]He's like, "You're name is Shaun-dee?
- [00:34:34.736]"I'm gonna call you out now.
- [00:34:36.390]He literally everyday is like,
- [00:34:38.777]"Um I gonna say like this whole scenario."
- [00:34:42.250]And then he'll be like,
- [00:34:44.056]"Okay Shaun-dee what do you think?"
- [00:34:44.889]I'm sitting there,
- [00:34:45.722]and there's 200 plus kids in there.
- [00:34:47.390]And we're all in the law field.
- [00:34:49.630]It's a very competitive field as well.
- [00:34:52.910]You try not to say something dumb.
- [00:34:54.727]"Oh no it's fine can you say something dumb.
- [00:34:56.747]"'Cause that means you don't know the question.
- [00:34:58.190]"And I'll tell you the answer."
- [00:35:00.654]It's like, okay.
- [00:35:02.610]So it's different
- [00:35:03.443]when you have personal relationship
- [00:35:05.138]with your professor
- [00:35:06.660]because then they'll get to know you.
- [00:35:08.360]They'll pick on you a little bit
- [00:35:09.480]and they'll challenge you in class.
- [00:35:12.460]You'll have to
- [00:35:13.745]think about at that moment,
- [00:35:14.810]did you do the reading?
- [00:35:15.850]If you didn't do the reading,
- [00:35:17.380]it shows if you didn't do it,
- [00:35:18.360]you can't answer the question.
- [00:35:20.447]But literally everything he'll say is
- [00:35:22.480]from the reading
- [00:35:23.313]so you have to think about it.
- [00:35:25.163]I think building a relationship
- [00:35:27.240]with your professor or TA,
- [00:35:28.370]it helps you a lot.
- [00:35:29.510]'Cause that's how I made it through my first year,
- [00:35:32.611]because I had a lot
- [00:35:34.433]of rough times with my papers.
- [00:35:35.500]And I went to my TA's
- [00:35:36.333]and they gave me feedback.
- [00:35:37.590]I sent them everything,
- [00:35:39.189]they really help me a lot freshmen year,
- [00:35:43.238]that's my challenges so far.
- [00:35:52.363]We haven't really done anything like that
- [00:35:55.469]'cause a lot of us go home.
- [00:35:59.547]My answer is that we don't.
- [00:36:01.570]But that would be something
- [00:36:03.232]we should have,
- [00:36:07.470]Are there any degree-specific questions?
- [00:36:10.330]Or what you're thinking about?
- [00:36:13.680]Your career path.
- [00:36:29.090]I'm gonna have to lead them.
- [00:36:32.614]But I would express that I'm gonna
- [00:36:35.821]bring it back to the community
- [00:36:37.236]and that's how my mom wanted me to do it.
- [00:36:39.235]That's what I wanted to do.
- [00:36:41.163]I always loved college since I was a kid,
- [00:36:43.653]but not college,
- [00:36:44.670]school in general, education itself.
- [00:36:47.183]I loved getting good grades,
- [00:36:50.210]that's what my thing was is getting good grades.
- [00:36:52.630]I like the refreshing feeling
- [00:36:53.780]of getting an A+
- [00:36:54.783]when a test was really hard.
- [00:36:56.390]Studying for something,
- [00:36:57.300]it was a refreshing feeling
- [00:36:59.620]that I liked.
- [00:37:00.453]So that's why I always studied so hard.
- [00:37:04.489]And my mom reminded me almost everyday,
- [00:37:06.679]you're gonna do this one day.
- [00:37:08.800]So sends me a text,
- [00:37:09.977]"Hey remember that thing you told me in you were little,
- [00:37:13.267]"This is what you're gonna do.
- [00:37:15.165]"Just think about how you're in mock trials,
- [00:37:16.687]"Sitting in the court.
- [00:37:18.027]"Learning different procedures,
- [00:37:19.873]"And how to talk to the judge.
- [00:37:21.505]"You're gonna do that someday in the future.
- [00:37:23.379]"You're gonna be fighting for our people.
- [00:37:26.113]"You're gonna be fighting for different things
- [00:37:27.455]"In the tribe.
- [00:37:28.288]"You know what's going on,
- [00:37:29.121]"You can see different fights
- [00:37:30.677]"From other different people,
- [00:37:32.437]"From community members everyday.
- [00:37:34.565]"That's what you wanna do?
- [00:37:35.398]"You should do it."
- [00:37:36.451]I did read in different textbooks
- [00:37:39.490]that whenever we transition from the BIA.
- [00:37:43.829]Originally from the BIA
- [00:37:45.850]there was basically white people
- [00:37:48.440]running our tribe from BIA.
- [00:37:51.230]They usually said we're a sovereign nation,
- [00:37:54.153]we're not technically sovereign.
- [00:37:55.680]We have white people running our nation.
- [00:37:58.230]When I read the textbook is that
- [00:37:59.090]those tribal courts have white attorneys.
- [00:38:05.810]Or people who are basically
- [00:38:07.770]fresh out of law school,
- [00:38:09.600]barely go to the law perspective
- [00:38:12.040]They don't really know our culture
- [00:38:13.991]and they don't know our background
- [00:38:15.746]of things that can do
- [00:38:16.827]which is (mumbles).
- [00:38:21.378]I got this a little bit.
- [00:38:25.381]I heard about that 'cause I was really down
- [00:38:27.936]those traveling ports
- [00:38:28.769]they all have people
- [00:38:29.602]that don't care about the tribal members (mumbles).
- [00:38:34.449]Maybe we could just start bringing more trouble.
