- [00:00:05.810]So I'll introduce myself.
- [00:00:07.450]My name is Gabriel Bruguier.
- [00:00:10.722]I'm the education and outreach coordinator
- [00:00:12.670]at the Mid-America Transportation Center.
- [00:00:14.830]And today I'll give a talk
- [00:00:16.030]that's called Funding Your Success.
- [00:00:17.780]So this is an overview of what I'm gonna talk about.
- [00:00:21.920]I'll talk a little bit about my story,
- [00:00:24.751]about how I got to where I am right now.
- [00:00:27.370]Then we'll go into areas that have to do
- [00:00:29.863]with the application process.
- [00:00:31.680]So before you begin to apply,
- [00:00:33.280]I'll talk, maybe give a little bit
- [00:00:34.670]of strategies about that.
- [00:00:36.440]I'll talk about area schools with full Scholarships,
- [00:00:40.320]area schools with in-state tuition.
- [00:00:43.584]I'll talk about navigating around the
- [00:00:45.980]National Indian Education website.
- [00:00:48.630]I'll talk about some scholarships
- [00:00:50.300]for careers in transportation,
- [00:00:52.420]and then finally, just kind of building off
- [00:00:55.190]what Spencer just talked about, getting involved,
- [00:00:58.410]I'll give you some specific things
- [00:00:59.353]that you can do within the Mid-America
- [00:01:01.720]Transportation Center Outreach program
- [00:01:03.610]that you can get involved with
- [00:01:05.650]before you even get to UNL,
- [00:01:08.920]or even if you don't come to UNL
- [00:01:11.050]as NICC students, you can participate in.
- [00:01:14.387]Okay, so this is my story.
- [00:01:18.380]After I graduated from Sisseton High School,
- [00:01:22.420]where I actually went to K through 12 at Sisseton,
- [00:01:28.081]and so right after high school,
- [00:01:29.110]I went to Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota.
- [00:01:32.180]And you'll notice, like at the end of that,
- [00:01:33.780]there's a little sad face.
- [00:01:37.194]So since the topic, since the subject
- [00:01:38.900]of my talk is Funding your Education,
- [00:01:42.320]when I went to Concordia,
- [00:01:44.050]I took out a bunch of student loans,
- [00:01:47.290]and I didn't have, I had some scholarships,
- [00:01:49.430]but the proportion of scholarships
- [00:01:51.840]to student loans weren't the greatest.
- [00:01:54.600]So the loans that I took out to go
- [00:01:57.530]to the small, private college that Concordia is,
- [00:02:02.850]were a frown face.
- [00:02:05.571]So today in this talk, I'm gonna talk
- [00:02:07.310]about smiley faces and talk about ways
- [00:02:09.180]that you can get an education
- [00:02:12.320]without having to expend that kind of money.
- [00:02:15.610]So I'm not saying any, there's nothing
- [00:02:17.880]negative I'm saying about the kind of education,
- [00:02:20.900]all that experience that you would get
- [00:02:23.330]at a small, private liberal arts college.
- [00:02:25.790]I'm just saying that in terms of finances,
- [00:02:30.870]it's gonna be a lot more.
- [00:02:34.100]You'll have to, yeah, so.
- [00:02:38.150]I won't go down that path,
- [00:02:41.500]but if you want to talk about it,
- [00:02:43.062]we can talk about it.
- [00:02:43.895]So I spent a couple years at Concordia,
- [00:02:46.440]and then I went to, I ended up
- [00:02:49.040]at the Universidad de las Américas Puebla.
- [00:02:52.300]Sorry for my bad Spanish accent.
- [00:02:54.353]Believe it or not, I do speak fluent Spanish.
- [00:02:57.680]I ended up there as an exchange student,
- [00:03:00.250]and I was presented with the opportunity
- [00:03:02.210]of staying there and doing an entire degree.
- [00:03:05.420]And the option was return to South Dakota
- [00:03:07.960]or stay in sunny Mexico,
- [00:03:11.100]and yeah, that one won.
- [00:03:13.850]So that one has a smiley face
- [00:03:16.030]because I actually qualified,
- [00:03:19.450]since I took on a full-time student status,
- [00:03:22.630]I actually qualified for in-state tuition,
- [00:03:26.150]even though I was not a Mexican citizen,
- [00:03:30.670]I still had an American passport
- [00:03:32.710]and everything like that.
- [00:03:34.070]When I got in-state tuition,
- [00:03:36.010]which actually was pretty comparable
- [00:03:39.590]to like a state school in a state like Nebraska,
- [00:03:44.790]and I also, on top of that,
- [00:03:47.550]got the 50% tuition scholarship
- [00:03:50.307]based on my academic record that I had accumulated
- [00:03:54.330]in high school and at Concordia.
- [00:03:56.480]So that really put me at a good position.
- [00:03:59.100]I had to do work-study, you know,
- [00:04:00.780]some of the scholarships that you might receive
- [00:04:03.900]have work-study attached to them,
- [00:04:05.840]but that really worked out to my benefit,
- [00:04:08.040]because they stuck me in the
- [00:04:10.650]Office of International Relations,
- [00:04:13.390]where I was getting my degree.
- [00:04:18.000]I didn't speak hardly any Spanish,
- [00:04:20.610]and they're like, all right,
- [00:04:21.880]go, you know, be an office temp.
- [00:04:24.570]So I was running documents across the University,
- [00:04:27.670]usually with a note pinned to my shirt
- [00:04:31.000]that they would take and they'd be like,
- [00:04:32.287]"Oh, okay," and then I kind of learned
- [00:04:35.130]how to speak the language,
- [00:04:36.090]and then eventually I just kind of read the note,
- [00:04:38.450]and then eventually I could say
- [00:04:40.180]what people told me to do, but yeah.
- [00:04:42.450]That's kind of how I started out,
- [00:04:43.770]but it was a good experience
- [00:04:45.810]because it just kind of like taught me to
- [00:04:49.310]hey, you just gotta go for it, you know.
- [00:04:53.280]Just jump in the deep end
- [00:04:54.976]and teach yourself how to swim,
- [00:04:57.010]and pretty soon you'll be afloat.
- [00:05:00.420]So I studied there.
- [00:05:02.383]I got a degree in International Relations.
- [00:05:06.600]There is a period in there where I studied
- [00:05:08.870]at another university in Mexico
- [00:05:10.840]when I was doing graduate school,
- [00:05:13.240]but while I was at the university,
- [00:05:16.020]when I was studying for the International Relations degree,
- [00:05:18.940]I realized what I was really passionate about was
- [00:05:21.489]philosophy, the subject of philosophy.
- [00:05:24.466]And I realized that,
- [00:05:27.980]and I hadn't realized this long ago,
- [00:05:29.600]like what I wanted to do was go to graduate school.
- [00:05:32.420]I wanted to go to graduate school,
- [00:05:34.217]and I thought for a long time
- [00:05:35.050]I was gonna do it in something like International Relations,
- [00:05:38.060]but then I changed my mind the way,
- [00:05:41.760]and so I started to look
- [00:05:43.440]into graduate programs in philosophy,
- [00:05:46.750]but the way graduate programs are set up
- [00:05:49.600]in the United States,
- [00:05:50.470]it's often difficult to go into a graduate program
- [00:05:54.020]with full funding if you don't have a degree
- [00:05:56.280]already in that program.
- [00:05:57.560]So I went from one undergraduate
- [00:06:00.970]to another undergraduate,
- [00:06:02.720]and that was at the University of Minnesota Morris now.
- [00:06:06.380]The Minnesota Morris linewith a smiley face,
- [00:06:11.690]I'll talk about Morris in just a little bit,
- [00:06:14.300]later on in the presentation,
- [00:06:15.680]but Native American students get a full-tuition waiver
- [00:06:20.100]for studying there, that is we get a free education,
- [00:06:24.120]and I also applied for other scholarships
- [00:06:26.610]and fellowships.
- [00:06:27.970]I did take out a little bit of student loans
- [00:06:30.030]to get, you know, like a laptop
- [00:06:31.760]and some other things like a car
- [00:06:33.581]that I really didn't need, but I really wanted one.
- [00:06:37.200]And so, you know, I should've made that like,
- [00:06:39.680]I thought about making that a,
- [00:06:41.490]the face with a, the mouth is just like
- [00:06:44.762]a straight line, but I couldn't find out
- [00:06:47.430]how to do that, so, this is smiley face.
- [00:06:51.920]And so I went there, and luckily,
- [00:06:54.420]since I got a degree at the University of the Americas,
- [00:06:58.540]which is a United States accredited school,
- [00:07:01.830]I was able to just go in
- [00:07:03.920]and do the required courses for my undergraduate.
- [00:07:06.980]So I didn't have to take any core classes
- [00:07:08.800]or anything like that, which is amazing.
- [00:07:10.460]So I finished that degree in two years,
- [00:07:13.840]and then I applied to graduate programs.
- [00:07:20.348]And applying for graduate programs is a very,
- [00:07:23.590]it's a very intense and often miserable process.
- [00:07:29.500]I applied to 16 different programs,
- [00:07:32.190]and I got accepted to three,
- [00:07:36.280]and I chose to come to University of Nebraska
- [00:07:39.130]and that's where I am.
- [00:07:40.508]I've been here since 2011.
- [00:07:42.490]I'm at the dissertation stage of my Ph.D.
- [00:07:46.270]of my doctorate program,
- [00:07:49.030]which means that I'm all done with coursework,
- [00:07:52.968]and I passed some qualifying exams.
- [00:07:55.510]So I just have to write a dissertation.
- [00:07:58.600]Someone in this room is on that dissertation committee.
- [00:08:02.363](he laughs)
- [00:08:03.196]So that'd be Chris.
- [00:08:05.692]So yeah, Chris is on there.
- [00:08:08.470]So he bothers me every once in a while.
- [00:08:10.070]He's like, "How's that dissertation coming?"
- [00:08:11.387]I'm like, "Chris, I've been working
- [00:08:13.157]"on the conference, but I'll do it afterwards."
- [00:08:17.020]And so, yeah, that's where I'm working,
- [00:08:19.250]and I also work full-time
- [00:08:20.505]at the Mid-America Transportation Center,
- [00:08:24.070]doing work that I love,
- [00:08:25.760]cause like Spencer was talking about,
- [00:08:27.650]just because you have a degree in something
- [00:08:29.410]doesn't mean you have to work in that.
- [00:08:30.790]Right, my degree is in International Relations,
- [00:08:34.530]Philosophy, and then now more Philosophy,
- [00:08:37.310]and I work in educational outreach.
- [00:08:40.340]You know, they're not oh, STEM educational outreach,
- [00:08:44.538]and so the joke around the department is
- [00:08:47.070]oh look at Dave.
- [00:08:47.903]He just walked in with a Masters in Philosophy,
- [00:08:49.810]and now he's teaching STEM.
- [00:08:52.760]So you don't really, like the jobs
- [00:08:55.690]that you can get, like Spencer said,
- [00:08:57.390]the people that are hiring you are just looking
- [00:08:59.380]to see that you can, you know, commit yourself
- [00:09:01.930]to something that you can stick it out
- [00:09:04.740]and put in for the power of word,
- [00:09:06.560]and then come out at the end,
- [00:09:08.961]with, you know, like with a degree
- [00:09:10.670]or with some qualification
- [00:09:12.180]that you can show that you can do that.
- [00:09:13.800]So just keep that in mind
- [00:09:16.173]as you're going through this.
- [00:09:21.573](he mumbles)
- [00:09:24.960]Had to think about that one.
- [00:09:25.793]All right, so yeah, that's kind of my story,
- [00:09:29.150]and oh yeah, so the smiley face.
- [00:09:31.990]I got, the reason I accepted my offer
- [00:09:34.750]to UNL was the funding package.
- [00:09:37.060]So I was a graduate teaching assistant
- [00:09:39.540]for many years, which means that I had
- [00:09:41.970]a full-tuition scholarship
- [00:09:43.570]and then a stipend for living.
- [00:09:45.599]So I got that covered.
- [00:09:48.890]I also applied to and received
- [00:09:53.370]an American Indian graduate fellowship,
- [00:09:55.650]and so that's one of the things I'll talk about
- [00:09:57.533]in this presentation.
- [00:09:59.490]That's a national Indian scholarship
- [00:10:02.270]that's available to all of you.
- [00:10:05.027]And then I also did take out
- [00:10:06.063]some student loans again.
- [00:10:08.300]I should've made that a serious face,
- [00:10:10.570]but it's more smiley than serious, sorry.
- [00:10:13.260]We'll be doing that, so
- [00:10:15.090]that's my educational degrees, so.
- [00:10:18.310]The first thing I want to talk about
- [00:10:19.390]is before you begin to apply.
- [00:10:22.250]So the first thing is setting aside some time.
- [00:10:26.700]An awesome thing is that you guys have already started
- [00:10:29.260]to set aside some time.
- [00:10:30.970]You're here at our scholars program.
- [00:10:33.270]You're listening to talks.
- [00:10:34.640]You're thinking about it.
- [00:10:35.870]So you've already begun the process.
- [00:10:38.060]Now there's gonna be some more time
- [00:10:41.360]that's needed, like in the future,
- [00:10:44.761]and then doing all these things takes time,
- [00:10:48.600]but luckily, this presentation will be
- [00:10:52.286]available to you, so like when you're thinking
- [00:10:54.270]about this again in the future,
- [00:10:56.370]you can get access to this.
- [00:10:57.840]You can go to some of the links that I have.
- [00:11:00.050]You can look at those,
- [00:11:01.730]and you'll have the information at hand
- [00:11:05.024]when you're thinking about this in the future.
- [00:11:07.590]And also, you know,
- [00:11:11.440]you'll have my time to,
- [00:11:14.655]I travel to MATC on a weekly basis,
- [00:11:19.040]and you'll have my contact information
- [00:11:20.527]if you want to set up an appointment.
- [00:11:22.620]I'm free to talk about,
- [00:11:23.980]like I love talking about this stuff,
- [00:11:25.890]and like Spencer said, you know,
- [00:11:27.220]we're here to help, and I'll do anything
- [00:11:29.140]that I can do to help.
- [00:11:32.340]So it just takes time.
- [00:11:34.760]So I'm willing to offer my time.
- [00:11:38.500]Talk to someone about it.
- [00:11:40.350]So in this room, who can you talk to?
- [00:11:43.246]You can talk to me.
- [00:11:44.651]You can talk to Dr. Chris.
- [00:11:46.609]You can talk to Marissa.
- [00:11:48.750]Any doctor laureate, you know, we're all here.
- [00:11:52.473]The offer is much out.
- [00:11:53.770]Dr. Erin is here.
- [00:11:56.819]We're all here for that reason.
- [00:11:58.990]Now who at NICC does the transfer process?
- [00:12:06.450]Who's in charge of that?
- [00:12:07.283]Is that Dawn?
- [00:12:09.129]I believe it's Troy.
- [00:12:10.476]Troy, mm-hmm.
- [00:12:12.640]Troy seems like a really cool guy.
- [00:12:14.358]I've been talking to him a lot, so.
- [00:12:16.622]He's okay.
- [00:12:17.487]He's okay.
- [00:12:18.352](all laugh)
- [00:12:19.914]What's your name again?
- [00:12:21.763](woman mumbles under all laughing)
- [00:12:30.566]That's too far.
- [00:12:31.684](mumbling under laughing)
- [00:12:38.159]But you know, like Troy,
- [00:12:39.290]I bet you know, just schedule an appointment with him.
- [00:12:41.840]I don't think he would say no,
- [00:12:44.347]but yeah, it's talking.
- [00:12:45.650]Talking to people is how these things get started.
- [00:12:48.080]That's how you get to making plans, you know.
- [00:12:49.586]It's just questions.
- [00:12:51.065]People are going to ask you questions,
- [00:12:51.907]like what do you want to do?
- [00:12:53.623]Where do you see yourself in a couple years?
- [00:12:55.320]What can you do to get there?
- [00:12:56.670]What have you already done to, you know, get you there?
- [00:12:58.950]So it will be a series of questions,
- [00:13:01.040]and basically, what you'll have to do is
- [00:13:02.974]come up with the answers, like come up
- [00:13:04.293]with how you can answer or how you have answered
- [00:13:08.220]that series of questions that are based on,
- [00:13:11.890]you know, that client.
- [00:13:13.960]One of the things that I have on there is
- [00:13:15.950]to write and revise a personal essay.
- [00:13:18.280]So I've read so many different
- [00:13:20.446]in so many different places
- [00:13:22.100]that the personal essay is one of the most important parts
- [00:13:25.170]of your application process.
- [00:13:29.020]Why?
- [00:13:29.900]It's because it's telling the people
- [00:13:31.420]who are like looking at your application
- [00:13:33.713]who you are.
- [00:13:34.940]So spend a lot of time on it.
- [00:13:36.200]Really think about if it's not just a prompt,
- [00:13:41.215]you know, it's not just a thing,
- [00:13:43.443]but you know, it's asking like who you are,
- [00:13:47.565]what makes you tick, you know.
- [00:13:48.540]Really think about it,
- [00:13:49.430]and don't be afraid to be honest
- [00:13:51.200]because being honest is, you know,
- [00:13:54.020]what they're looking for.
- [00:13:56.710]Yeah, I think it's the best policy.
- [00:13:58.167]Mm-hmm.
- [00:14:06.670]Oh, they'll usually specify.
- [00:14:09.260]They'll usually specify.
- [00:14:13.829]You know, for I think,
- [00:14:17.540]well actually, one of the, one of the places,
- [00:14:21.950]one of the national scholarships
- [00:14:23.890]that I was looking at from the,
- [00:14:25.354]I think it's the American Indian College Fund is
- [00:14:27.514]like four pages.
- [00:14:29.058]So they can be lengthy, but a lot of places are
- [00:14:31.430]like a page, a page or two.
- [00:14:44.400]Yeah, their essays are very structured,
- [00:14:48.950]because they say like, speak to this point.
- [00:14:51.588]Speak to that point.
- [00:14:52.421]Speak to this point,
- [00:14:53.644]but if it's just a general,
- [00:14:55.040]if it's just a general theme,
- [00:14:56.640]I guess that's the one I was talking about.
- [00:14:59.030]Each of those things, if they're asking
- [00:15:03.190]a specific question, make sure that, you know,
- [00:15:05.160]you speak specifically to that.
- [00:15:08.730]And again, this is one of those things
- [00:15:10.480]where, you know, I would be willing to
- [00:15:12.400]look at an application.
- [00:15:15.220]I won't speak for exercise.
- [00:15:16.920]I'll say I will.
- [00:15:19.810]And then the last point is cultivate
- [00:15:21.960]optimism and patience.
- [00:15:24.282]So, you know, optimism is basically
- [00:15:29.210]not the opposite of pessimism,
- [00:15:31.410]so you know, like a pessimistic person is gonna be
- [00:15:33.950]like, "Oh, I'm not gonna apply to anything,
- [00:15:35.687]"because I'll never get in."
- [00:15:38.320]No, that's kind of the wrong attitude.
- [00:15:40.100]A lot of these places that we've been telling you about are
- [00:15:43.200]looking for, they're promising applicants.
- [00:15:48.004]So just some of the information that you've heard
- [00:15:51.440]today, I mean, is enough to give hope.
- [00:15:56.912]Patience is that they take a long time.
- [00:15:59.170]I'm not gonna lie, and these take a long time.
- [00:16:03.730]The application process for my graduate degree,
- [00:16:07.240]for example, started in July of one year,
- [00:16:12.270]and ended in April the next.
- [00:16:15.730]You know, it takes time.
- [00:16:18.540]So that's why it's good to have
- [00:16:23.111]things that you can do to keep yourself occupied
- [00:16:26.277]so you're not constantly thinking about it.
- [00:16:29.493]Okay, so any questions so far?
- [00:16:34.966]Okay, the next thing about,
- [00:16:37.150]the next area is the area schools
- [00:16:39.940]with full-tuition scholarships.
- [00:16:41.470]So I'm gonna talk about three four-year institutions
- [00:16:45.510]that are around this area.
- [00:16:49.462]We have UMM.
- [00:16:51.191]We have Wayne State college,
- [00:16:52.960]and also University of Nebraska.
- [00:16:55.830]So starting off with UMM.
- [00:16:58.010]So what I've done here is I've put a lot of,
- [00:17:01.833]I've put a lot of links in here
- [00:17:03.350]so that when you access this later,
- [00:17:04.920]you will have access to these links.
- [00:17:07.490]So the University of Minnesota Morris offers
- [00:17:09.953]a full-tuition waiver to American-Indian students
- [00:17:13.410]who are admitted to the university
- [00:17:15.430]and can meet eligibility requirements.
- [00:17:18.860]That's a tough one.
- [00:17:20.490]So here are the requirements.
- [00:17:25.480]The explanation is because, at one time,
- [00:17:29.720]there was an Indian Boarding School
- [00:17:32.070]on the UMM campus, and the state of Minnesota
- [00:17:37.660]stipulated that from henceforth
- [00:17:40.790]that, you know, a certain point that's history,
- [00:17:43.650]that it would give free tuition
- [00:17:46.355]to all Native students who applied.
- [00:17:48.910]So here are the,
- [00:17:53.800]here's the eligibility requirements,
- [00:17:59.122]and then here's the procedure for applying
- [00:18:01.650]to a waiver, which basically says,
- [00:18:04.360]you have to apply to the college
- [00:18:05.737]and get admitted and then turn in a form
- [00:18:09.020]that proves your, you know,
- [00:18:12.760]proves that you meet eligibility,
- [00:18:14.780]and then it'll show up on your financial aid.
- [00:18:19.010]So in addition to that,
- [00:18:22.250]you can apply for other,
- [00:18:24.960]other, you know, scholarships and fellowships.
- [00:18:32.620]And one of the nice features
- [00:18:37.790]about UMM is that currently,
- [00:18:41.370]it has over 300 native students enrolled there,
- [00:18:44.830]which is more than 18% of the student body.
- [00:18:47.930]So UMM is a small school.
- [00:18:50.624]I think, er, a couple thousand students,
- [00:18:56.300]so it's, you know, like it's much smaller
- [00:18:58.540]than UNL, that's for sure.
- [00:19:01.760]So it's very small,
- [00:19:03.460]and it has a lot of Native students on there,
- [00:19:06.400]and they have a very strong Native program.
- [00:19:21.049]Oh, yeah, so students who receive tuition
- [00:19:22.940]regards also give for student fees and all other charges.
- [00:19:27.420]Yeah, so it wouldn't cover that,
- [00:19:29.284]but it would just get the tuition.
- [00:19:31.664]Yeah, good question.
- [00:19:36.110]But like I said, they have a lot
- [00:19:37.170]of other scholarships that are available,
- [00:19:39.080]so I just wanted to pull up this.
- [00:19:40.910]So this is the Native American Student Life
- [00:19:43.320]that talks about some of the things they offer,
- [00:19:48.110]and they particularly have the Native American
- [00:19:52.130]Student Success program.
- [00:19:56.280]That's a Native American student like, but.
- [00:20:03.225]There we go,
- [00:20:04.176]Native American Student Success, so.
- [00:20:07.010]This project is kind of like what
- [00:20:09.610]I was talking about with, you noticed that,
- [00:20:12.248]the United States has, it has counseling.
- [00:20:16.710]It has, you know, you get advising
- [00:20:20.350]on academic advice, career and financially.
- [00:20:25.280]It has a very strong social group,
- [00:20:27.520]like the group there meets every week,
- [00:20:30.800]but they have like activities every week, as well.
- [00:20:36.410]And then they put on a really big pow-wow, too.
- [00:20:38.130]So they have the orientation.
- [00:20:41.030]So this information is up for you to look at,
- [00:20:44.060]for you to sort of like think about
- [00:20:49.400]being part of a group like that,
- [00:20:50.420]because as we'll talk about tomorrow,
- [00:20:52.600]like Native American student groups are
- [00:20:54.334]really important for succeeding
- [00:20:56.570]in college because of, you know,
- [00:20:58.460]like benefits of being part of a community
- [00:21:01.630]within, you know, like the larger body
- [00:21:04.200]of the like the University of Nebraska,
- [00:21:06.500]or in this case, Minnesota.
- [00:21:09.618]And so, yeah, that's one of the schools
- [00:21:12.200]that's included in the full-tuition scholarship
- [00:21:16.103]schools that are around this area.
- [00:21:17.960]You know, I think it's about a seven-hour drive,
- [00:21:21.010]probably five hours from
- [00:21:23.558](mumbles under coughing)
- [00:21:25.271]So any questions on the awards?
- [00:21:29.910]All right, so the next school is Wayne State.
- [00:21:34.400]I found that Wayne State College,
- [00:21:38.300]there's a one-year, non-renewable,
- [00:21:40.680]full-tuition scholarship to specifically
- [00:21:44.030]tribal college transfer students.
- [00:21:47.841]So I put a link to the application here,
- [00:21:54.780]and so it's maybe a ...
- [00:22:00.680]What is that?
- [00:22:01.782]I don't know, I hope I don't download a virus.
- [00:22:11.970]If I do, Marissa can fix it, right?
- [00:22:15.120]It's the union computer.
- [00:22:15.970]I'm not worried about it.
- [00:22:16.803]Okay, that's good.
- [00:22:19.110]Ah, maybe one of those, though.
- [00:22:20.470]Okay, well the application kind of is
- [00:22:22.233]just like, it's got a few questions
- [00:22:25.120]that you answer and then it has some things
- [00:22:26.840]that you have to file one of your,
- [00:22:30.260]either teachers or one is a faculty
- [00:22:34.380]or administrators that NICC fill out.
- [00:22:38.680]Unfortunately, it only lasts for a year,
- [00:22:41.200]and you would need to apply for other scholarships,
- [00:22:43.293]just to cover living expenses
- [00:22:45.310]and tuition past the first year.
- [00:22:49.240]So that's Wayne State.
- [00:22:51.009]I don't know very much more about it than that.
- [00:22:54.854]Then finally, we have the UNL,
- [00:22:59.730]and there's at least two options for full tuition.
- [00:23:02.470]One is the one for low-income students generally,
- [00:23:05.980]and one specifically for Native Masters students.
- [00:23:08.550]So University of Nebraska has this Collegebound
- [00:23:12.020]Nebraska project, program,
- [00:23:14.680]where anybody, so anybody who applies
- [00:23:19.796]and needs financial aid, qualifies them
- [00:23:22.913]for a Pell Grant will receive a full-tuition
- [00:23:25.710]scholarship to the University of Nebraska.
- [00:23:29.190]So here's some information about, you know,
- [00:23:31.778]the Collegebound program.
- [00:23:34.106]You know, they talk about why go to college,
- [00:23:37.007]which student ambassadors,
- [00:23:39.410]but the tuition assistance information is here.
- [00:23:42.073]They talk about how much it costs to attend college,
- [00:23:47.850]and some other information.
- [00:23:50.270]There's a lot of financial aid available to assist you,
- [00:23:55.010]and then, do I qualify?
- [00:23:57.270]So you would have to apply through the FAFSA,
- [00:23:59.820]and I imagine, if you're, in essence,
- [00:24:02.010]you've applied for a FAFSA already, right?
- [00:24:05.470]Oh, yeah, you will.
- [00:24:08.468](woman mumbles in audience)
- [00:24:10.670]Oh, very good.
- [00:24:12.305]So but pretty much everyone else has applied
- [00:24:15.114]for the FAFSA, right?
- [00:24:16.540]Yeah, so, then we have to fill out the form,
- [00:24:18.900]and like I said, way back at the beginning,
- [00:24:21.710]these things just take time.
- [00:24:24.400]So that's one of the other things,
- [00:24:27.860]but you know, if it equals, you know,
- [00:24:32.190]like a full-tuition scholarship.
- [00:24:34.640]The next one is the Native American
- [00:24:37.270]Tribal College Scholarship.
- [00:24:38.560]So that's Ridell, who recognizes this young lady?
- [00:24:44.196]Rebecca.
- [00:24:45.029]Rebecca, yeah.
- [00:24:46.970]You'll find this on this page.
- [00:24:50.760]There's a heritage scholarship,
- [00:24:51.763]that this one, since you are
- [00:24:56.080]at Nebraska Indian Community College.
- [00:25:01.430]Where is that one?
- [00:25:03.230]I don't know.
- [00:25:04.242]There's a lot of them.
- [00:25:05.075]It's like right there (mumbles) the other one.
- [00:25:09.990]Right there, yep.
- [00:25:10.890]So it also qualifies for room fees,
- [00:25:14.570]but you know, if you know people
- [00:25:16.350]in South Dakota studying at one of the, you know,
- [00:25:19.413]like tribal colleges in South Dakota,
- [00:25:21.140]also the ones in Montana, North Dakota.
- [00:25:24.590]It's all for, or it includes all those schools,
- [00:25:28.587]and if you see here at the bottom,
- [00:25:30.380]it's a renewable scholarship.
- [00:25:31.710]It's not like the one that we just talked about
- [00:25:33.480]at Wayne State, that is you can, you know, go,
- [00:25:37.006]you can reapply for it every year.
- [00:25:40.770]So the, so that is the full-tuition scholarship,
- [00:25:45.600]but that just covers, you know, tuition.
- [00:25:47.630]There's also room and board.
- [00:25:50.100]So for that reason, I've included
- [00:25:52.830]the full list of transfer scholarships.
- [00:25:54.470]Now this was part of Ridell's presentation.
- [00:25:59.187]So you'll have this information available to you.
- [00:26:06.370]So this is, these are all the ones
- [00:26:08.120]that he touched on,
- [00:26:10.290]and then on the next page of my presentation,
- [00:26:14.930]I have lists to, links to other ones.
- [00:26:18.460]So the Chief Standing Bear Journey for Justice
- [00:26:24.030]scholarship is one that's offered by Joe Starita.
- [00:26:29.000]And that's for, that might be a comprehensive one,
- [00:26:35.113]kind of not really depending on where you study.
- [00:26:38.940]Some of these are specific to what your interests are.
- [00:26:41.440]So going way back to the beginning of the presentation
- [00:26:43.960]when I asked you to think about, you know, make a plan.
- [00:26:47.130]So making a plan will be based on you know,
- [00:26:48.583]like what you're interested in,
- [00:26:50.340]and a lot of these scholarships do tailor
- [00:26:52.110]for specific interests.
- [00:26:54.140]So we'll see that especially when you go into the,
- [00:26:57.463]with the national scholarship page.
- [00:27:01.559]With the next one, for example, on the list,
- [00:27:04.680]has to do with architecture.
- [00:27:07.930]So if you are interested in,
- [00:27:10.067]if you're interested in pursuing an architecture degree,
- [00:27:13.760]the Gary and Elizabeth Scholarship,
- [00:27:16.590]one for Native Americans interested in architecture,
- [00:27:21.210]and now it's not letting.
- [00:27:22.170]In order to get it approved for their programs.
- [00:27:27.870]All right, area schools with in-state tuition.
- [00:27:32.770]So I'll talk a little bit about the
- [00:27:35.240]University of South Dakota,
- [00:27:37.100]since we have a University of South Dakota rep here,
- [00:27:39.177]and then maybe she can add a little bit more,
- [00:27:42.330]but it's part of,
- [00:27:45.860]oh yeah.
- [00:27:47.698]So this point, the first point is that
- [00:27:49.210]Nebraska is part of the Midwest Student Exchange program
- [00:27:52.530]that offers in-state tuition to participants.
- [00:27:56.166]So schools in the state of like Illinois,
- [00:27:59.720]Ohio, are part of this program,
- [00:28:02.780]where you can go to those schools
- [00:28:04.900]and receive the tuition that an Ohio resident
- [00:28:08.820]or Illinois resident would get.
- [00:28:11.736]I think North Dakota is.
- [00:28:13.940]Most of the schools in South Dakota aren't,
- [00:28:16.080]except for the University of South Dakota,
- [00:28:18.290]which Nebraskans can get in-state tuition for.
- [00:28:21.527]And that is my next school.
- [00:28:23.100]So University of South Dakota,
- [00:28:29.213]I think if you're a Nebraska resident,
- [00:28:32.007]you would qualify for in-state tuition,
- [00:28:34.850]and if you're just paying for tuition,
- [00:28:37.170]it's actually a couple hundred dollars less
- [00:28:39.780]than University of Nebraska.
- [00:28:42.240]So they like to put that on billboards
- [00:28:45.160]as you're driving north here,
- [00:28:46.750]like save money by coming to USD.
- [00:28:50.157](baby murmurs baby talk)
- [00:28:55.300]Yeah.
- [00:28:57.070]But they do have a lot of scholarships
- [00:29:00.950]that are available to Native students,
- [00:29:03.950]and a lot of them, if I remember correctly,
- [00:29:07.520]they're really pushing for healthcare,
- [00:29:09.350]is that correct?
- [00:29:10.637]Yeah, STEM.
- [00:29:11.470]Yeah, so if you're interested in that,
- [00:29:13.631]there's money available for those kind of careers.
- [00:29:19.482]And I think that might be the Anyan Scholarship.
- [00:29:22.063]Yeah, we just, we're about ready
- [00:29:23.497]to award that right now.
- [00:29:25.891]What's that?
- [00:29:26.724]We're ready to award that right now.
- [00:29:28.055]Oh.
- [00:29:28.888]Yeah, and we only have,
- [00:29:30.340]out of 224 enlisted students,
- [00:29:32.100]we had four apply.
- [00:29:34.401]Four? Four?
- [00:29:35.234]Four.
- [00:29:36.067]How many awards?
- [00:29:36.900]Three.
- [00:29:38.990]75% of woman.
- [00:29:39.823]And we had a scholarship last year
- [00:29:41.720]that was $2000, $1500, $1000,
- [00:29:44.390]and I couldn't get one student to apply for it.
- [00:29:48.170]So there's a lot of scholarship money out there,
- [00:29:52.110]but it just takes, you know, time to apply.
- [00:29:57.005]For, they have one at the school of business.
- [00:29:58.890]I know we got some people interested in business.
- [00:30:04.351]And then, look at the science.
- [00:30:06.290]So yeah, you just have to, like I said,
- [00:30:08.281]think about what your plan is,
- [00:30:09.727]think about, you know, like ask yourself.
- [00:30:11.350]What am I interested in?
- [00:30:12.970]And then as you answer that,
- [00:30:14.560]then you can look for scholarships
- [00:30:16.976]that specifically (speaks under coughing) to that.
- [00:30:20.780]So this information is up on,
- [00:30:24.370]will be up on the MATC website.
- [00:30:30.233]And we'll go, any questions about that one?
- [00:30:33.005]Okay.
- [00:30:40.003]I'm gonna, how do I, how do?
- [00:30:50.400]So just out of curiosity,
- [00:30:52.770]is any of this new to you,
- [00:30:54.320]new information, like you didn't know about before?
- [00:30:58.430]Or you knew about all these programs already.
- [00:31:01.848](students murmur)
- [00:31:02.681]You knew about all of them?
- [00:31:03.822]No, I said like it's all new.
- [00:31:04.951]It's all new.
- [00:31:06.210]Is that exciting, that there's possibility
- [00:31:07.985]that free tuition assistance?
- [00:31:11.833]There's also, I'm just gonna plug
- [00:31:13.740]two other programs.
- [00:31:14.944]So I'm a University of Iowa alumni,
- [00:31:16.630]so the University of Iowa also has
- [00:31:19.940]up to full tuition with the,
- [00:31:24.505]used to be images, think it might be
- [00:31:27.510]something else now, but they have up
- [00:31:29.330]to full tuition for Native students.
- [00:31:32.500]And then the University of Minnesota Duluth
- [00:31:35.810]also has up to $8,000 scholarships,
- [00:31:39.220]offered to (speaks under coughing) tribe
- [00:31:41.640]for specific programs related to nation building.
- [00:31:44.160]So there's a lot out there.
- [00:31:47.040]It's just finding out where it's at, so.
- [00:31:50.803]Yeah, I can update the, this presentation
- [00:31:53.810]with that information.
- [00:32:05.233]Mm-hmm, yeah.
- [00:32:06.670]Once you get through one,
- [00:32:09.090]the rest are, the rest become easy.
- [00:32:12.033]Like when I was doing my philosophy applications,
- [00:32:14.780]it was just like (grunts).
- [00:32:22.230]Um, let's see that.
- [00:32:26.387]Oh, okay, all right.
- [00:32:27.570]So, oh yeah.
- [00:32:29.430]National Indian Education website,
- [00:32:31.670]so there are a ton of national scholarships
- [00:32:35.539]that are available to Native students,
- [00:32:37.253]many of them are based on specific disciplines.
- [00:32:41.363]So here's a tip that I found
- [00:32:43.243]as I was preparing for this presentation.
- [00:32:47.229]If you go to a lot of these listings,
- [00:32:49.110]you might some information that's out of date.
- [00:32:51.840]So you might need to Google the specific scholarship
- [00:32:56.560]to get the updated information.
- [00:32:58.600]So it might be, for example,
- [00:33:01.610]or another thing you might find,
- [00:33:04.550]I'll show you an example when you go
- [00:33:06.060]to the American Indian College,
- [00:33:09.040]or American Indian Graduate Center font,
- [00:33:11.670]is that, or Foundation, is that, you know,
- [00:33:14.113]like a lot of them are closed.
- [00:33:15.640]So oh, that won't let me do that.
- [00:33:18.400]So maybe I will just Google this one.
- [00:33:25.080]So a lot of the cycles close,
- [00:33:28.150]and then they don't open up again
- [00:33:29.670]until the next cycle.
- [00:33:31.410]So you might just have to kind of write that down,
- [00:33:37.586]and then keep that in mind.
- [00:33:47.020]I want to go to Google.
- [00:33:48.363]I don't like Bing.
- [00:33:49.528]It says right here.
- [00:33:58.725]Rats.
- [00:34:01.000]Okay, so I applied for,
- [00:34:03.100]when I was going to graduate school,
- [00:34:04.490]I applied and received $5,000 every year
- [00:34:09.250]for you know, graduate school.
- [00:34:11.000]So that was split over two semesters,
- [00:34:13.470]so $2500 in the fall,
- [00:34:15.683]and $2500 in the spring.
- [00:34:19.137]And all I need to do for that is just,
- [00:34:21.950]you know, fill out the application.
- [00:34:23.410]For this one, you'd have to, you know,
- [00:34:24.890]like give a copy of your, you know, tribal registration,
- [00:34:29.360]and write an essay.
- [00:34:30.950]And I did that, and I got it.
- [00:34:35.140]It didn't take, it took like an afternoon.
- [00:34:37.771]So they have all kinds of levels
- [00:34:43.060]of scholarships.
- [00:34:45.240]So for example, if you're applying
- [00:34:48.420]for your graduate degree after,
- [00:34:52.940]or even like an associate degree,
- [00:34:54.330]they're looking for helping to find
- [00:34:56.860]someplace like, you know, University of Nebraska.
- [00:35:00.903]So you have all these things that are STEM.
- [00:35:07.150]This one is business.
- [00:35:08.270]This looks like a really good one, $5,000 a year.
- [00:35:12.966]Vet medicine.
- [00:35:15.680]Just this one looks.
- [00:35:18.850]Banking, business administration.
- [00:35:24.316]So yeah, you'll notice closed, closed,
- [00:35:25.920]closed, closed, closed.
- [00:35:27.270]You'll have to check in periodically
- [00:35:29.680]to see when they reopen,
- [00:35:31.712]and then, you know, tailor it to your,
- [00:35:35.641]or tailor classification for that.
- [00:35:39.348]So there are a lot of different options to get it.
- [00:35:45.710]I have them listed on the site
- [00:35:52.963]that the Omaha Public School put together.
- [00:35:59.079]And as you'll go down the list,
- [00:36:01.250]some will repeat, but they've actually done the work,
- [00:36:04.570]and I don't identify the area.
- [00:36:09.390]So based on whatever your interest is,
- [00:36:12.160]you just kind of go down and scan
- [00:36:14.430]for engineering, law enforcement,
- [00:36:20.850]engineering, yeah.
- [00:36:24.940]So that is all information for you.
- [00:36:34.012]Okay.
- [00:36:41.697]Okay, and so I'm coming towards my final slides.
- [00:36:48.300]It wouldn't be, it wouldn't be a presentation
- [00:36:53.380]for Mid-America Transportation Center
- [00:36:56.271]if I didn't mention a transportation specific scholarship.
- [00:36:59.700]So the Dwight D., oh, no.
- [00:37:03.680]I'll start ahead.
- [00:37:05.403]I got ahead of myself.
- [00:37:07.480]The UNL actually has a specialization
- [00:37:11.280]for transportation in the civil engineering programs.
- [00:37:14.330]So Sydney is doing that,
- [00:37:17.067]and then she's going to proceed on
- [00:37:19.200]to a Master's with a specialization in transportation.
- [00:37:24.424]And so that's within civil engineering.
- [00:37:26.170]So essentially, if you're interested
- [00:37:27.805]in transport, or in transportation,
- [00:37:31.117]you know, there's scholarships
- [00:37:32.090]that are available to you.
- [00:37:34.037]I'm just gonna do engineering
- [00:37:35.670]that we mentioned from Mr. Spencer.
- [00:37:38.320]So yeah, but specifically, there's the
- [00:37:41.760]US Department of Transportation
- [00:37:43.750]Dwight D. Eisenhower Transportation Fellowship.
- [00:37:47.490]So the purpose of that is to attract
- [00:37:49.150]qualified students to the field of transportation,
- [00:37:50.740]education and research, and to advance
- [00:37:53.510]transportation workforce development.
- [00:37:56.673]Eligible participants are pursuing degrees
- [00:38:00.180]in transportation-related disciplines,
- [00:38:03.420]starting from sophomore year to doctoral level.
- [00:38:06.460]So there are, those are basically
- [00:38:09.060]national scholarships for students who are
- [00:38:11.770]already in a four-year degree program.
- [00:38:15.280]There's 150 to 200 approximately per year,
- [00:38:20.020]and they are, they range from $1,800 to $35,000 a year.
- [00:38:28.230]My guess is the higher amount ones are graduate-specific.
- [00:38:32.990]So but that doesn't exclude you as a tribal college student
- [00:38:37.720]because they also have their Eisenhower Tribal College
- [00:38:43.230]and University Scholarship.
- [00:38:44.990]And so, I included a link to that.
- [00:38:47.610]This is one of those ones that are closed,
- [00:38:51.640]as you can see.
- [00:38:53.390]This gives you information from last year,
- [00:38:55.410]but if you're interested in applying
- [00:38:56.860]for a transportation scholarship,
- [00:39:00.200]this will give you all the information,
- [00:39:04.030]talk about eligibility.
- [00:39:05.920]If you go up here, you'll get related documents
- [00:39:09.050]that talk about, you know, guidelines, etc., etc.
- [00:39:14.300]And since it's a website
- [00:39:18.410]from the US Department of Transportation,
- [00:39:21.810]it's very detailed, technical and boring,
- [00:39:25.030]but, you know, the information is there.
- [00:39:28.850]The opportunity is there.
- [00:39:33.590]Okay, so those are transportation specific.
- [00:39:39.630]Finally, going back with what Spencer was talking about
- [00:39:44.040]and I'm bringing it around,
- [00:39:45.380]as NICC students, you have access to MATC Outreach Program.
- [00:39:49.130]So as you've been talking about,
- [00:39:52.614]NICC is an institution that partners
- [00:39:54.830]with the University of Nebraska
- [00:39:59.500]in the overall MATC scheme.
- [00:40:01.940]And so the things that we have available are
- [00:40:05.830]also available to you,
- [00:40:07.580]and so I'm gonna pull that up.
- [00:40:10.110]That's a really fun program that we did over the summer,
- [00:40:14.930]and probably that's one to get over the summer, as well.
- [00:40:19.867]There's Sydney in the background.
- [00:40:24.029]This is from scholars program a couple years ago.
- [00:40:26.423]There's Chris and Crystal,
- [00:40:31.494]and there's our summer program.
- [00:40:32.327]So our education tab has our STEM leadership academy.
- [00:40:38.580]We would love to have some of you guys work there
- [00:40:41.510]or help us out as mentors.
- [00:40:45.960]We have our Scholars program,
- [00:40:47.290]which you're participating in now.
- [00:40:49.759]We have internships that are available
- [00:40:51.600]over the summer.
- [00:40:52.940]Those are fluffy or full-time
- [00:40:54.920]with one of our participating,
- [00:40:57.567]with one of our participating people.
- [00:41:02.460]The after-school program, you can talk to me
- [00:41:05.040]about how to get involved when I come
- [00:41:06.660]up to Lacey Aubria has helped us,
- [00:41:09.770]and she's gonna help us as we go forward with that.
- [00:41:13.350]We have our STEM lesson plan database.
- [00:41:17.130]That's more, I'd have to get on ahead and build that.
- [00:41:22.260]Our summer institute again, that's something
- [00:41:24.698]that I have to do, but all the other things
- [00:41:26.460]that I said before are things that are available to you,
- [00:41:29.890]and we would love to have you work with us, especially like,
- [00:41:33.870]going back to what Dr. Thomas was talking about,
- [00:41:37.440]about you know, like, starting early.
- [00:41:39.867]You know, we have programs that are going right now
- [00:41:43.800]at Omaha nation who want to get involved.
- [00:41:47.280]We have Winnebago.
- [00:41:48.340]We want to get up to Santine, Nibrera,
- [00:41:51.235]and all these schools that don't really have
- [00:41:52.730]afterschool programs or you know, STEM opportunities
- [00:41:57.030]for these students, and bring those,
- [00:41:59.180]and get them started in, like Chris was saying,
- [00:42:03.830]show students that they can do it.
- [00:42:06.876]That it's not, you know, it's not disconnected from them.
- [00:42:10.870]It's actually part of their whole,
- [00:42:12.420]or it can be part of their everyday lives.
- [00:42:14.915]It is part of their everyday lives.
- [00:42:16.580]And yeah.
- [00:42:19.790]That's we want to do.
- [00:42:21.603]So you can talk to me after the presentation
- [00:42:25.020]to get involved, but I am coming
- [00:42:27.560]right up to the end of my presentation.
- [00:42:31.037]We're gonna have a short break
- [00:42:32.950]before we do the next one.
- [00:42:34.600]So I'd like to thank you all.
