- [00:00:03.270]So the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts
- [00:00:05.840]is launching this year a brand new program
- [00:00:10.640]called Sound Art and Experimental Music Program.
- [00:00:13.950]A key partner with this project has been
- [00:00:17.660]the University of Nebraska's architecture department
- [00:00:21.680]and specifically the FACT Program,
- [00:00:24.950]which is a design build program
- [00:00:26.810]that engages architecture and interior design students
- [00:00:31.070]in the literal design and build process
- [00:00:36.960]of a real life construction project.
- [00:00:40.090]Most of architectural education
- [00:00:42.100]is based in the sort of hypothetical project in the studio.
- [00:00:45.870]And rarely do students actually engage
- [00:00:47.820]with real construction outside of that realm.
- [00:00:50.640]And so this provides them an opportunity
- [00:00:52.800]to really understand the realities of build projects.
- [00:00:57.730]So we designed a sound residency,
- [00:00:59.880]a stage and recording studio.
- [00:01:02.020]And you come in through the main entrance,
- [00:01:03.760]you can see the stage and a gem of a monolith
- [00:01:07.470]surrounding the mechanical room.
- [00:01:09.210]They really want it to be a stand out space,
- [00:01:11.240]have a unique designs.
- [00:01:12.700]Not only did we have to design it, but we had to think about
- [00:01:14.630]how these parts are gonna go together
- [00:01:15.930]and every little detail of the construction process
- [00:01:18.470]and working with the contractor to help bring that to life.
- [00:01:22.420]We're not just making theoretical projects
- [00:01:24.690]with nice renderings and all that stuff.
- [00:01:26.220]We're actually, physically building the stuff
- [00:01:28.270]so we have to think about the structural properties of it,
- [00:01:31.710]material properties and how this stuff works together,
- [00:01:33.533]as well as price, and how to work with a client,
- [00:01:37.970]which is as real world as it gets.
- [00:01:40.450]This will be actually the largest project
- [00:01:43.050]that we've built to date,
- [00:01:44.440]and it's the Sound Art and Experimental Music venue
- [00:01:46.900]occupies the full basement of the existing building.
- [00:01:50.340]The students work on all ranges of the project,
- [00:01:52.940]but the real focus is on the creative opportunities
- [00:01:55.830]of project development and construction.
- [00:01:58.530]I loved being out and on site building.
- [00:02:02.950]It's such a unique opportunity
- [00:02:04.460]to actually see your design come to life,
- [00:02:07.110]'cause most of the time I'm more
- [00:02:08.290]into the computer world a lot,
- [00:02:09.390]I mean, we build little models,
- [00:02:10.470]but to come and have it a full scale in front of you
- [00:02:14.260]is pretty extraordinary, and also having
- [00:02:16.580]that client relationship has been really fun.
- [00:02:19.200]This project is gonna help me in my career in the future
- [00:02:21.570]because I actually have firsthand experience
- [00:02:23.850]working with the different contractors.
- [00:02:25.340]Making decisions, both before in the design phase
- [00:02:28.150]and in the construction phase after.
- [00:02:30.470]We really enjoy this type of partnership
- [00:02:33.140]because it brings artists and experts
- [00:02:37.740]directly in contact with students.
- [00:02:40.320]That brings another creative voice
- [00:02:42.760]to the table when conceptualizing and developing a project.
- [00:02:46.340]I foresee the Bemis Center continuing
- [00:02:48.950]its relationship with the College of Architecture
- [00:02:52.120]and when the Bemis is ready to update
- [00:02:56.420]another part of its facility,
- [00:02:57.920]I'm sure we'll be in touch with the college.
