[00:00:03.970]an architectural historian just because they understand
[00:00:06.210]that better.
[00:00:07.043]If I say I'm a design historian I have to say
[00:00:09.360]well I teach the history classes that interior
[00:00:11.290]design students take.
[00:00:13.030]We look at the important buildings that there are
[00:00:16.030]in Lincoln, and one of the most important buildings
[00:00:18.730]in Lincoln is the Quilt Center Building.
[00:00:21.310]I came here last week and I met with some
[00:00:23.870]of the Quilt Center staff and we developed this worksheet,
[00:00:27.370]and each of the students has one
[00:00:29.290]and so that immediately gets them engaged with the artworks
[00:00:32.920]that they are looking at.

[00:00:49.147]I've published four books since I've been here
[00:00:50.770]in the College of Architecture.
[00:00:52.500]One of them was based on my dissertation
[00:00:55.210]on French colonial architecture in Africa.
[00:00:58.290]And the other three are interior design
[00:01:00.630]reference books and textbooks.
[00:01:02.970]I had this wonderful UCARE student, Elyssa Yoneda,
[00:01:06.620]and she and I worked together on this book,
[00:01:08.690]this dictionary of interior design.
[00:01:10.530]And after that book was finished, the publishers
[00:01:13.270]came back to me with this idea of doing a book
[00:01:16.690]which is pretty close to being a who's who
[00:01:18.410]of interior design.
[00:01:20.080]And then I thought well the best person for me
[00:01:21.880]to work with, would be Elyssa Yoneda.
[00:01:23.890]We
[00:01:24.980]did a lot of researching
[00:01:27.240]in libraries, through books and periodicals because a lot
[00:01:30.530]of the information wasn't available online.
[00:01:34.130]We contacted the living designers
[00:01:36.230]and
[00:01:37.380]had interviews with them.
[00:01:39.780]So it's just great to shift the students
[00:01:42.050]to be thinking about that they're really writing
[00:01:44.300]for a public audience and not just writing
[00:01:46.160]personally something for me.

[00:01:50.810]He's a very knowledgeable and generous person.
[00:01:54.310]He definitely was a good mentor and guided me
[00:01:56.890]along the way.

[00:02:01.070]design professor and one who focuses on history
[00:02:04.340]is I absolutely love doing the research things.
[00:02:07.870]And that I'm always learning about new topics.
[00:02:11.180]This isn't something where I came into the position
[00:02:14.040]knowing everything that I wanted to study.
[00:02:16.210]The years that I spend exploring things with students
[00:02:19.840]in both design and history classes,
[00:02:21.870]I constantly see new topics that I would like to work on.
[00:02:25.370]And when I'm able to work on these projects
[00:02:27.870]actually with students it's even more
[00:02:29.880]of a rewarding experience.
