- [00:00:00.680](gentle music)
- [00:00:03.210]Hello and welcome.
- [00:00:04.780]Our spring commencement ceremonies
- [00:00:06.540]marked the end of a remarkable academic year.
- [00:00:11.670]I had the pleasure of presenting 121 degrees
- [00:00:14.790]to our newest graduates.
- [00:00:16.610]It's easily one of the best parts of my job.
- [00:00:19.750]And as I reflect on this past year,
- [00:00:22.080]I'm just inspired by our students and faculty.
- [00:00:25.460]They've made such a positive impact in our built
- [00:00:27.930]and planned environments
- [00:00:29.240]and elevated our professions through their efforts.
- [00:00:33.670]Interior Design Professor Mark Hinchman
- [00:00:35.960]and his former UK student, Elyssa Yoneda,
- [00:00:39.340]collaborated on an exciting new book,
- [00:00:42.190]Interior Design Masters is a must read
- [00:00:44.740]for anyone with an interest in interior design.
- [00:00:47.790]The mentor-mentee collaboration
- [00:00:50.200]began as Alyssa's undergraduate research project.
- [00:00:54.400]Working with Mark was really interesting.
- [00:00:57.440]He's a very knowledgeable and generous person.
- [00:01:00.960]He definitely was a good mentor and guided me along the way.
- [00:01:04.630]So it's just great to shift the students
- [00:01:06.610]to be thinking about
- [00:01:07.960]that they're really writing for a public audience
- [00:01:09.940]and not just writing personally something for me.
- [00:01:13.080]A landscape architecture program
- [00:01:14.810]partnered with UNL School of Natural Resources,
- [00:01:18.190]and the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture
- [00:01:20.700]to bring an engaging two day symposium to campus.
- [00:01:24.410]Experts in each field, shared insights and best practices
- [00:01:28.660]from four projects that explored how design,
- [00:01:31.670]horticulture and ecology can work together
- [00:01:34.440]to achieve innovative new environments.
- [00:01:37.330]The event was so successful, it's sold out.
- [00:01:40.530]I can't wait to see what they plan next.
- [00:01:43.620]Building partnerships elsewhere on campus,
- [00:01:46.270]community and Regional Planning Associate Professor,
- [00:01:49.080]Rodrigo Cantarero, collaborates with researchers
- [00:01:52.260]from the Department of Child Youth and Family Studies
- [00:01:55.100]and Nebraska extension.
- [00:01:57.240]Together they are gathering data to understand
- [00:02:00.000]the many factors that affect the well being
- [00:02:02.490]of rural Nebraska minorities.
- [00:02:05.110]There's really a gap in information about this population.
- [00:02:08.460]When we look at communities
- [00:02:10.080]and what makes community a good place,
- [00:02:13.130]the measures should be not on
- [00:02:15.960]the top or who is doing well but more on the bottom.
- [00:02:21.720]In that manner, we enhance the community as a whole.
- [00:02:25.670]Our interdisciplinary design build fact studio
- [00:02:29.600]brings together art and music
- [00:02:31.550]within a new space in the Bemis Center.
- [00:02:34.110]The studio, led by Jeff Day,
- [00:02:36.820]collaborated with the Bemis to design and build
- [00:02:39.480]a new interior for their sound art
- [00:02:42.150]and experimental music residency program.
- [00:02:45.150]This project has been really great
- [00:02:47.210]to actually have a real client that you're working with,
- [00:02:49.930]not only did we have to design it,
- [00:02:51.230]we had to think about how these parts are gonna go together
- [00:02:53.130]and every little detail of the construction process
- [00:02:55.660]and working with a contractor to help bring that to life.
- [00:02:59.040]We really enjoy this type of partnership
- [00:03:01.690]because it brings artists and experts
- [00:03:06.290]directly in contact with students
- [00:03:08.890]that brings another creative voice to the table
- [00:03:12.150]when conceptualizing and developing a project.
- [00:03:14.790]And we understand the educational benefits for the students,
- [00:03:19.830]and that is really important as part of our mission
- [00:03:22.050]at the Bemis.
- [00:03:23.500]Partnerships like the ones we have with the Bemis Center,
- [00:03:26.500]our alumni and our other human collaborators are invaluable,
- [00:03:30.830]and quite frankly,
- [00:03:31.980]integral to the educational process necessary
- [00:03:35.090]to move the future leaders of our professions.
- [00:03:38.220]We really couldn't do this without you.
- [00:03:40.790]I'd like to close by sharing some exciting news.
- [00:03:44.020]This fall, will be celebrating
- [00:03:46.210]all those who have participated throughout the years
- [00:03:48.770]in the London program.
- [00:03:50.630]Our 50th anniversary events are scheduled for this October
- [00:03:54.110]in Lincoln and April 2020 in London.
- [00:03:57.670]So be on the lookout for an invite and save those dates.
- [00:04:01.737]Also, if you're an alum of the program,
- [00:04:05.150]please send us some pictures and stories
- [00:04:07.180]of your London experiences.
- [00:04:09.240]We'd love to share them in a publication we're planning.
- [00:04:12.460]Remember, you don't need a special reason to reach out to us
- [00:04:15.870]and let us know how you're doing.
- [00:04:17.590]We always love to hear from you.
- [00:04:19.810]Have a great summer.
