- [00:00:00.467](upbeat music)
- [00:00:05.039]Whoo!
- [00:00:06.152]My coworker!
- [00:00:07.632]California, we in the house!
- [00:00:09.140]I found a community here and um,
- [00:00:11.230]they were able to support me along my journey.
- [00:00:13.610]Look at her, she is a role model,
- [00:00:15.371]a role model for young Asian-American women!
- [00:00:17.640]How much money do I have on here?
- [00:00:19.890]One-fifty to two hundred,
- [00:00:20.830]maybe? (laughs loudly)
- [00:00:22.150]Yeah, we made it ourselves.
- [00:00:23.750]We gotta show some love, you know?
- [00:00:25.060]That's my best friend right there.
- [00:00:26.340]All the way from California, states from Nebraska.
- [00:00:28.790]First generation, low income, and made it to the top,
- [00:00:32.070]that's a story right here.
- [00:00:33.905](upbeat music)
- [00:00:37.022](inaudible)
- [00:00:39.510]After college, I will be heading to Slovakia
- [00:00:41.700]as a Fulbright Scholar teaching English
- [00:00:43.802]in a high school for a year.
- [00:00:45.840]The best part of the Nebraska Experience
- [00:00:47.710]is being given a lot of different and diverse
- [00:00:50.540]opportunities on campus.
- [00:00:52.560]Degree in Nebraska means the world to me.
- [00:00:54.730]It's the greatest feeling in the world,
- [00:00:57.070]can't describe it. Go Huskers!
- [00:00:59.870]Uh, I'm actually going to continue working
- [00:01:01.510]at the University. I work at the College of Engineering
- [00:01:03.920]as their Finance and Grants Manager,
- [00:01:05.280]so I'm going to continue giving back to this
- [00:01:06.920]wonderful university that gave so much to me.
- [00:01:08.960]What does it mean to have a graduate in the family?
- [00:01:11.560]A lot of hard work,
- [00:01:12.660]you did a great job, baby. (chuckles)
- [00:01:14.620]It's definitely one of those schools
- [00:01:15.760]where the whole community feels like
- [00:01:17.330]supporting you through it.
- [00:01:18.350]So, it definitely was a good feeling
- [00:01:20.040]to be able to get it from here.
- [00:01:21.480](upbeat music)
- [00:01:24.867](laughs) Uh, yeah.
- [00:01:27.240]I'm particularly proud that
- [00:01:28.460]I got the opportunity to work on stage combat,
- [00:01:30.790]which is something that distinguishes
- [00:01:32.473]the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:01:34.190]from a lot of different theater schools.
- [00:01:36.009]Ah, hey!
- [00:01:38.140]I'm so excited. He's our first child to graduate.
- [00:01:41.800]Very proud father. It's a great time,
- [00:01:44.614]in uh, in his life.
- [00:01:46.760]I'm really proud of being the first-generation
- [00:01:49.400]in my family. My parents are immigrants who came
- [00:01:51.800]from Mexico and, honestly gave it their all
- [00:01:54.430]just so that I could have this opportunity.
- [00:01:56.788]Shelby! Shelby! Shelby! Shelby!
- [00:02:00.300]My Nebraska degree means being able to represent
- [00:02:03.214]the underrepresented, and for me, is the Latino community.
- [00:02:06.599]A degree from Nebraska means a
- [00:02:08.300]dream come true, really.
- [00:02:09.470]I dreamed of coming to Nebraska since I've been a
- [00:02:11.186]small boy, and the dream of actually
- [00:02:14.130]accomplishing it and actually getting
- [00:02:15.150]the degree is just amazing.
- [00:02:17.980](upbeat music)
- [00:02:21.662]Hey!
- [00:02:24.287]Does that look good?
- [00:02:25.440]A degree from Nebraska means the opportunity
- [00:02:27.610]to go out in the world and make a difference.
- [00:02:31.231]Go Big Red!
- [00:02:32.970]Go! Big! Red! (laughs)
- [00:02:35.120]Nebraska's a great place to go to school
- [00:02:36.750]because of all the opportunities that are here,
- [00:02:38.890]the access to the best professors in our field,
- [00:02:41.340]a ton of undergraduate research.
- [00:02:43.270]I'm most proud of establishing the women's
- [00:02:45.320]ice hockey team during my time at Nebraska.
- [00:02:47.680]I get to go pursue a degree in law next
- [00:02:50.340]at Yale Law School.
- [00:02:51.760]Unreal experience. I couldn't have asked
- [00:02:54.090]for anything more really like,
- [00:02:55.940]it was a long three years but we made it.
- [00:02:58.210]Yep, we made it in the same program and yeah, the
- [00:03:00.560]first-generation program at UNL is pretty awesome.
- [00:03:03.377][Trevor and Edmon] Go Big Red!
- [00:03:05.121](upbeat music)
- [00:03:10.561]Yay!
- [00:03:12.480]It's awesome because I'm a first-generation student,
- [00:03:15.100]I'm an immigrant from Vietnam.
- [00:03:16.420]So this means a lot to me that my family
- [00:03:18.620]came and I have the first degree in our family.
- [00:03:21.490]It's amazing. (chuckles)
- [00:03:23.168](crowd cheers)
- [00:03:25.160]Walking across the stage
- [00:03:26.480]and looking up and seeing my family,
- [00:03:28.540]it's really hard to put into words,
- [00:03:29.940]so I'm maybe for once, speechless about it.
- [00:03:32.430]I mean, it was unbelievable.
- [00:03:34.280]I think it's a no-brainer, the best part
- [00:03:36.080]of the Nebraska experience is the community here.
- [00:03:38.560]We're all committed to making this place better
- [00:03:40.650]and making each other better in the process,
- [00:03:42.490]and that's why Nebraska, as they say,
- [00:03:45.087]"there's no place like it."
- [00:03:46.779](upbeat music)
