- [00:00:00.170]All right, thank you Ben.
- [00:00:01.003]We are joined by the Chancellor
- [00:00:02.440]of University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:04.630]We are here, getting ready to watch a baseball game.
- [00:00:07.500]It's been a busy month on campus.
- [00:00:09.110]A lot of spring sports are starting
- [00:00:10.490]to wind down a little bit.
- [00:00:11.900]But even some of the winter sports just wrapped up.
- [00:00:13.760]We've had some really good stories to tell
- [00:00:15.670]with Huskers' sports here in recent weeks.
- [00:00:17.880]We sure have, Greg.
- [00:00:18.900]And after the long winter we've had,
- [00:00:20.460]it's great to be thinking about actually spring sports
- [00:00:23.370]and be out with the sun shining a lot in the last few weeks
- [00:00:27.170]and whatnot, so we have had good spring season.
- [00:00:32.200]Baseball certainly is doing well
- [00:00:34.940]and in the hunt here in the conference.
- [00:00:37.390]I'm very excited about that.
- [00:00:39.020]Our women's bowling team kind of a perennial power, right.
- [00:00:41.970]Made the semi-finals again at the national level.
- [00:00:44.610]Very proud of them for their performance in Ohio.
- [00:00:47.310]Our men's gymnastics team, the best since 1999,
- [00:00:50.340]finished nationally for them.
- [00:00:52.430]Made the Super Six and then ended up third nationally,
- [00:00:56.060]in the highest Big Ten team in the tournament.
- [00:00:58.720]So very pleased for them and their performance,
- [00:01:01.920]and excited for them.
- [00:01:04.264]We're leading up to commencement here, another week,
- [00:01:07.480]and we're gonna be graduating the largest class
- [00:01:11.210]in our history.
- [00:01:12.670]In our 150 history,
- [00:01:14.360]about 300 more then we graduated a year ago,
- [00:01:17.940]which was our biggest class we'd ever had
- [00:01:20.340]at that point and time,
- [00:01:21.380]so exciting time of the year.
- [00:01:23.250]No doubt, finals start on Monday.
- [00:01:24.910]That's a really busy time and stressful time for students.
- [00:01:27.890]A number of those Nebraska students
- [00:01:29.670]have had some unique achievements and experiences.
- [00:01:32.480]What can you tell us about these?
- [00:01:34.460]Well, you know, at the end of the school year,
- [00:01:37.050]a lot of awards get made,
- [00:01:39.250]both internally on the campus and nationally.
- [00:01:42.010]Very highly competitive national academic awards,
- [00:01:45.460]and we've had some great success here
- [00:01:47.830]amongst our student body in the last few weeks.
- [00:01:50.920]A big one was the naming of our 17th Truman Scholar,
- [00:01:55.310]which is a big national award,
- [00:01:57.150]a $30,000 award for graduate education.
- [00:02:00.070]It's highly, highly competitive.
- [00:02:02.200]Several hundred finalists compete for this.
- [00:02:05.336]And Emily Johnson, our current, new ASUN President
- [00:02:10.200]for this next year and her senior year,
- [00:02:12.742]was named a Truman Scholar here in the last couple of weeks.
- [00:02:15.980]She's a junior from Lincoln.
- [00:02:18.650]She's majoring in Global Studies,
- [00:02:20.290]Political Science, and Spanish.
- [00:02:22.750]So very excited for Emily receiving that honor nationally.
- [00:02:27.270]Our speech and debate teams continued to do well.
- [00:02:29.910]They won their seventh Big Ten title this season.
- [00:02:33.970]And Becca Human, who's a senior from Gretna,
- [00:02:37.250]majoring in English and Political Science
- [00:02:39.260]won a national title in extemporaneous speaking
- [00:02:41.750]here at the national tournament recently.
- [00:02:43.730]And our debate team just is returning
- [00:02:47.000]from their national Lincoln Douglas debates,
- [00:02:49.570]where they were a national runner-up again this year,
- [00:02:53.170]so big deal, speech and debate here
- [00:02:56.510]is actually the oldest student activity on our campus.
- [00:03:01.180]146 years of our history,
- [00:03:03.520]we've had a speech and debate program.
- [00:03:05.960]Our soil judging team and our School of Natural Resources
- [00:03:08.720]and Department Agronomy and Horticulture
- [00:03:10.510]placed third nationally just here in the last week.
- [00:03:14.110]Our Hotel, Restaurant, Tourism Management program
- [00:03:18.400]in the College of Education and Human Sciences
- [00:03:20.360]had 26 of our UNL students
- [00:03:22.897]who were working at the Masters Tournament
- [00:03:26.130]in Augusta here recently and got to observe
- [00:03:28.440]that big historic moment with Tiger.
- [00:03:31.790]It's the fourth year in a row that they've done that
- [00:03:35.200]under the leadership of Professor Shannon Rohan.
- [00:03:37.890]And it's almost a two week experience.
- [00:03:39.810]They're down there ahead of the tournament
- [00:03:41.380]and during the tournament, working the Masters.
- [00:03:45.241]And then just this past week,
- [00:03:48.091]we had Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella, here on campus.
- [00:03:53.610]He was here as part of the Raikes School of Computer Science
- [00:03:56.570]and Management's Spring Design Studio Showcase,
- [00:03:59.620]where they roll out new software applications
- [00:04:02.370]they've developed for clients in their senior class.
- [00:04:05.550]And had a great conversation with him
- [00:04:07.910]for the Greater Lincoln and University
- [00:04:10.010]audience and community.
- [00:04:12.330]About 1000 people at the Lied Center.
- [00:04:14.677]And a conversation listening to Satya
- [00:04:17.290]talk about leading this global giant of a company
- [00:04:20.580]and the tech space along with Jeff Raikes,
- [00:04:23.610]who was kind of leading that conversation with him.
- [00:04:26.060]One of our own Nebraskans, who was an executive at Microsoft
- [00:04:30.290]and head of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
- [00:04:32.200]before he retired a few years ago.
- [00:04:34.200]So, lots of exciting things and honors for our students,
- [00:04:37.400]and activities and wrapping up the year here.
- [00:04:40.060]Heard some great things about the Microsoft presentation.
- [00:04:42.390]Well, I know the University's been busy
- [00:04:43.898]in responding to the flooding that we had around the state
- [00:04:47.820]that you've organized resources
- [00:04:49.690]and coordinated response.
- [00:04:50.710]You've also created some opportunities for students
- [00:04:53.270]to give back to the state through service.
- [00:04:55.597]How can students get involved with this?
- [00:04:58.870]Well, we knew that there would be a great opportunity
- [00:05:03.040]for our students to work in effected communities
- [00:05:06.070]around the state that are dealing with the recovery
- [00:05:08.520]from the flooding earlier this spring.
- [00:05:11.870]And we built off of a successful model
- [00:05:14.950]that the Rural Futures Institute of the University
- [00:05:17.110]developed about five years ago,
- [00:05:19.110]where they teamed two students per summer
- [00:05:22.300]to go live in and work in a community in the state
- [00:05:25.600]that is a partner with that community
- [00:05:27.880]around some aspect of rural development.
- [00:05:30.810]So, whether it was economic development,
- [00:05:32.590]or tourism, or working with their Chamber,
- [00:05:36.760]or in a variety of different ways around the state.
- [00:05:39.770]So building off that model,
- [00:05:41.870]we are now planning to place 50 students
- [00:05:45.240]through a serviceship model in communities
- [00:05:49.300]across the state that are dealing with flood recovery.
- [00:05:52.890]We had 91 applicants.
- [00:05:54.700]This came together very quickly over the last month
- [00:05:58.300]for these paid internships that will be around the state
- [00:06:02.360]for 10 weeks this summer,
- [00:06:04.320]where they'll get college credit
- [00:06:06.040]for working in these serviceships.
- [00:06:09.222]Very excited about that opportunity.
- [00:06:11.750]Not for the reason that they're going, certainly,
- [00:06:14.350]but the opportunity for learning that they will have
- [00:06:17.500]in working with these communities.
- [00:06:19.340]They can get information, further information on this
- [00:06:22.640]by go.unl.edu/serviceships,
- [00:06:27.050]to represent the University in this effort this summer.
- [00:06:30.687]Try to help turn a negative into a positive.
- [00:06:32.930]Chancellor, always great to see ya.
- [00:06:34.370]Best of luck with finals and graduation in a week.
- [00:06:36.640]Looking forward to it.
- [00:06:37.650]Go Big Red.
- [00:06:38.483]Ronnie Green with us here in our pre-game show.
- [00:06:40.160]We're back with the first pitch of the Huskers game
- [00:06:41.790]with Illinois coming up next from Lier Field.
- [00:06:43.890]I am G. College, this is the Huskers Sports Network.
