- [00:00:01.180]Hi, my name is Matt McManigal.
- [00:00:02.710]I am a senior in biological systems engineering.
- [00:00:06.190]Hi, I'm Ryan,
- [00:00:07.220]I am also a senior in biological systems engineering.
- [00:00:10.018]I'm Terrell.
- [00:00:11.147]And I'm Megan.
- [00:00:12.760]And our project is the JP Lord Basketball Launcher.
- [00:00:16.510]So, we were approached by some faculty
- [00:00:19.437]at the JP Lord School in Omaha.
- [00:00:21.840]It is a school for children who have multiple disabilities
- [00:00:24.820]and are not able to have motor functions
- [00:00:27.150]and move their bodies, and require attention.
- [00:00:30.590]And the issue was, is that, in a physical education class,
- [00:00:33.290]they would like to play basketball,
- [00:00:35.140]but the kids are unable to play basketball
- [00:00:38.190]with their current limitations.
- [00:00:40.080]So, we were asked to design a basketball launcher
- [00:00:44.150]that would enable the children to shoot, play basketball
- [00:00:48.520]in a physical education class.
- [00:00:50.600]So, we originally started out making a decision matrix.
- [00:00:55.080]We came up with two designs originally.
- [00:00:56.960]One design was essentially a really big PVC pipe cannon,
- [00:01:01.460]which was powered with bungee cords.
- [00:01:04.530]We couldn't have it here today,
- [00:01:05.480]but we found that that design didn't work terribly well,
- [00:01:08.340]because of how much power it required
- [00:01:10.440]to pull back and cock the device.
- [00:01:14.330]It also was just too big and bulky.
- [00:01:15.810]So, another device that we ended up making,
- [00:01:18.850]is, we ended up modifying a tennis ball launcher.
- [00:01:20.770]Can we pull the tennis ball launcher in here?
- [00:01:24.330]Essentially, we hooked it up.
- [00:01:26.360]Sorry, here's the tennis ball launcher.
- [00:01:31.660]So, we took this pre-existing tennis ball launcher,
- [00:01:34.950]we mounted it on a tripod.
- [00:01:37.050]We added a bucket at the top here
- [00:01:38.540]to house the small basketball
- [00:01:40.980]that the children would be using.
- [00:01:43.090]And the big feature is that we, on the back here,
- [00:01:46.560]we have a motor, which is hooked up to a battery pack,
- [00:01:49.850]and we can actually hook a button up to,
- [00:01:51.600]and it's a switch.
- [00:01:52.560]So, essentially what happens is that you pull back
- [00:01:55.470]this orange plunger on the back of the device.
- [00:01:58.670]That loads the rubber bands and the ball, one side.
- [00:02:03.410]And then, in order to pull the trigger,
- [00:02:05.840]which was an issue for most of the students,
- [00:02:08.120]is that they don't have the dexterity
- [00:02:09.550]to pull the trigger themselves,
- [00:02:10.710]so we added the motor on the back.
- [00:02:12.360]And when you push the button,
- [00:02:14.160]there's a string attached to the motor
- [00:02:15.490]that compresses and pulls the trigger,
- [00:02:17.430]and so, essentially we, this is our solution
- [00:02:19.710]to allowing students to fire basketballs
- [00:02:23.610]in their physical education class with a button.
- [00:02:26.915]Thank you.
