- [00:00:01.480]Some hand warmers, my camera, my other lens.
- [00:00:05.240]Students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:00:07.820]head out for a class focused
- [00:00:09.800]on the sandhill cranes migration.
- [00:00:12.760]Armed with cameras, binoculars,
- [00:00:14.950]and cold weather gear, the students will tell
- [00:00:17.590]stories about one of Earth's greatest migrations.
- [00:00:21.890]Thank you guys, have so much fun!
- [00:00:23.760]The class is one of series of pop-up classes
- [00:00:26.780]offered by the
- [00:00:27.613]UNL College of Journalism and Mass Communication.
- [00:00:31.020]In the context of higher eta,
- [00:00:32.450]I think, there's a lot of conversation, right now,
- [00:00:34.340]about chunks of learning.
- [00:00:36.420]In fact, we hear about things called
- [00:00:37.730]micro-credentials, so certificates of completion
- [00:00:40.700]for chunks of courses.
- [00:00:42.360]Leading the class are
- [00:00:43.430]photographer Mike Forsberg
- [00:00:45.270]and documentary producer Mike Farrell.
- [00:00:49.380]I've been photographing cranes on the Platt
- [00:00:52.790]for about 25 years now,
- [00:00:55.700]and missing them,
- [00:00:57.680]I always tell people it would be like missing Christmas.
- [00:01:01.420]It's something that gets inside of you,
- [00:01:02.700]and never lets you go.
- [00:01:06.440]Forsberg and Farrell are founders of the
- [00:01:08.740]Platte Basin Timelapse Project that captures
- [00:01:11.530]multimedia content to tell the story of the watershed.
- [00:01:15.260]One of their employees, Mariah Lundgren,
- [00:01:17.580]travels with the class
- [00:01:19.100]and shoots the crane's video for this story.
- [00:01:22.150]I was watching the students
- [00:01:23.310]and they all seem very engaged,
- [00:01:26.180]very much in their own worlds.
- [00:01:29.860]Pop-up classes provide a short and intense experience.
- [00:01:33.960]Students earn one hour of credit,
- [00:01:36.310]and learn a skill or study a specific issue.
- [00:01:40.300]We know how difficult it is for people,
- [00:01:43.500]like Forsberg and Farrell,
- [00:01:45.870]to carve out time for a long-term project or class,
- [00:01:50.880]but they can find time
- [00:01:52.930]and I'm so grateful that they did for a weekend
- [00:01:55.300]immersive activity like this.
- [00:01:57.150]Students come home with new skills and confidence.
- [00:02:00.880]I'm really into wildlife photography,
- [00:02:03.250]and so I was like, I really want to learn more
- [00:02:05.680]and this is once in a lifetime experience.
- [00:02:08.360]When these kids come up with something
- [00:02:10.010]and its meaningful to them and they think
- [00:02:12.477]"oh I can do it that way and its good
- [00:02:16.260]and it means something to me"
- [00:02:18.460]then that's really amazing.
