- [00:00:00.350]So Nebraska and Purdue getting ready for game number two,
- [00:00:03.250]gonna be another gorgeous day here for baseball in Lincoln.
- [00:00:06.261]Before we get to the first pitch,
- [00:00:07.782]voice of the Huskers Greg Sharpe had a chance
- [00:00:10.280]to catch up with chancellor Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:12.332]Get the very latest with chancellor Green,
- [00:00:15.473]here's Greg Sharpe.
- [00:00:16.588]Okay, Nick.
- [00:00:17.505]Delighted to have the chancellor
- [00:00:19.700]of University of Nebraska with us here.
- [00:00:21.690]Today, chancellor, is our seventh home game.
- [00:00:23.670]We missed eight in March.
- [00:00:25.120]That's an inconvenience,
- [00:00:26.340]but what's really been bad is the weather that did cause
- [00:00:29.180]so much devastation and flooding around our state.
- [00:00:32.040]I know it has impacted so many Nebraskans.
- [00:00:34.168]The school, the university, has certainly been there
- [00:00:37.410]in many ways to try to help this out.
- [00:00:38.908]Well, Greg,
- [00:00:39.872]we did have a kind of up and down and all around March,
- [00:00:44.742]there's no other way to put it, in the state.
- [00:00:47.975]It did set us back a few baseball games,
- [00:00:50.370]so it's great to be here today for a game against Purdue.
- [00:00:54.466]See the sun shining, you know?
- [00:00:56.542]We are, of course, working on the flood recovery
- [00:01:01.194]and the disaster recovery from the flooding
- [00:01:04.596]and the blizzard conditions that we had last month.
- [00:01:07.657]Including in athletics, you might remember the NIT game
- [00:01:11.980]when $27,000 was donated from fans to go to
- [00:01:15.610]flood relief and victims of that flooding,
- [00:01:18.320]and we got the same thing coming up here shortly
- [00:01:20.070]in the spring game in a few weeks.
- [00:01:21.750]So, great to see those things happening.
- [00:01:24.405]But it is a challenging time, as communities
- [00:01:27.695]and individuals who have had property affected,
- [00:01:31.350]some loss of life as we know, as well.
- [00:01:33.635]Across a wide swath of the state and the region,
- [00:01:37.326]and as a university of course,
- [00:01:39.480]we are absolutely first and foremost concerned
- [00:01:43.212]about our students and their families
- [00:01:45.813]and prospective students who will be coming to us
- [00:01:49.064]in the coming year who may be right
- [00:01:51.764]in the middle of this disaster recovery.
- [00:01:54.805]As we've responded,
- [00:01:56.801]I'm very proud of our academic affairs
- [00:01:59.743]and student affairs folks,
- [00:02:01.480]lead by Donnie Plowman and Laurie Bellows,
- [00:02:03.652]in reaching to the students as they came back
- [00:02:06.740]from spring break, here recently,
- [00:02:09.033]in assuring that we were doing everything we could
- [00:02:13.008]to assist student who might have been directly impacted.
- [00:02:16.446]From their studies being disrupted,
- [00:02:18.646]and being able to continue in their spring semester,
- [00:02:22.460]as well as in the fall, for the incoming freshman class,
- [00:02:26.245]prospective students that we've been working with to assure
- [00:02:29.350]that we can do everything we can for them not to be set back
- [00:02:32.833]as they were in this flood recovery.
- [00:02:36.039]We also have Nebraska Extension,
- [00:02:38.696]we have an international and national
- [00:02:41.690]leading extension effort in Nebraska
- [00:02:44.569]through Nebraska Extension and they've really stepped up
- [00:02:47.960]to take a leadership role for the university, as a whole,
- [00:02:50.853]across all of the campuses of the University of Nebraska
- [00:02:54.873]in working with communities and individuals
- [00:02:58.160]in this recovery effort.
- [00:02:59.360]That's gonna be some time ahead, a lengthy time ahead.
- [00:03:02.997]Emergency assistance fund has been set up
- [00:03:05.863]by the University of Nebraska Foundation,
- [00:03:08.940]for individuals wanting to donate for assistance,
- [00:03:12.261]for people that have been impacted by the flooding.
- [00:03:16.395]And then our law school also has been working
- [00:03:19.825]to provide legal aid, particularly as people respond to
- [00:03:24.143]and seek disaster assistance, and the process of that,
- [00:03:28.438]providing legal aid and legal assistance, as well.
- [00:03:32.512]So, a lot happening in response to,
- [00:03:35.405]as Nebraskans will do to rebuild
- [00:03:37.803]and build back stronger than ever before.
- [00:03:41.010]Nebraska Extension can be so valuable in this.
- [00:03:43.160]If there's anyone interested in connecting with Extension,
- [00:03:45.865]where can they get some information?
- [00:03:47.830]And what kind of resources are available
- [00:03:49.580]out there for folks?
- [00:03:50.560]Well, you might remember back now, seven, eight years ago
- [00:03:54.300]the Missouri river flooding that we had in 2011
- [00:03:57.060]that impacted Nebraska's oil at that time.
- [00:03:59.717]And we set up at that time a flood.unl.edu website
- [00:04:03.668]through Nebraska Extension and that's been curated
- [00:04:07.739]and kept active, and we've of course ramped that up
- [00:04:11.360]even further now. So, you can go there for information.
- [00:04:15.095]There also is a lot of outpouring of wanting to help
- [00:04:19.267]through donations or through volunteering,
- [00:04:22.460]in flood recovery areas of the state.
- [00:04:24.973]So individual volunteers and organizations
- [00:04:28.086]should register with the county or the community
- [00:04:30.770]where they're volunteering, for safety reasons,
- [00:04:32.920]and to help offset the costs for some of these communities.
- [00:04:36.580]One of the things that Extension is helping
- [00:04:39.532]to coordinate or telling folks
- [00:04:41.175]is that tracking those volunteer hours
- [00:04:43.992]is very important in terms of federal disaster support.
- [00:04:47.870]So, Extension is helping to do that, as well.
- [00:04:52.973]And then, I should mention, of course,
- [00:04:55.700]The Ag community has certainly taken a big hit here,
- [00:05:00.076]through crop losses, through land losses,
- [00:05:03.377]through livestock losses, we've read and lot about that
- [00:05:07.130]over the last several weeks.
- [00:05:08.906]So the Extension is helping in many ways,
- [00:05:12.390]to help coordinate that recovery
- [00:05:14.210]and doing everything from collecting hay
- [00:05:16.280]for livestock producers at points throughout the state,
- [00:05:18.857]through resources to help with flood recovery,
- [00:05:22.385]land recovery and so forth.
- [00:05:24.631]So, lots of places to go through Nebraska Extension
- [00:05:29.030]and through the university as we move further
- [00:05:32.970]into this flood recovery.
- [00:05:34.470]Well, fantastic, we want those folks to know
- [00:05:36.846]that we haven't forgot them,
- [00:05:37.821]we're not gonna forget about them,
- [00:05:39.487]and hope that a baseball game today
- [00:05:41.003]may be a nice distraction for everybody.
- [00:05:42.616]Enjoy the game today and we look forward
- [00:05:44.091]to seeing you next week.
- [00:05:44.924]Go Big Red
- [00:05:46.410]With us here before the Huskers matchup
- [00:05:48.210]with the Purdue Boilermakers,
- [00:05:49.340]we're back with the first pitch
- [00:05:50.590]in game two of the series, coming up next,
- [00:05:52.996]from their field IMG College.
- [00:05:53.829]This is the Husker's Sports Network.
