Are you a high school freshmen - junior who has a passion for agriculture and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) but do not know what careers are out there? Cultivate ACCESS is a mentoring and development program where you will participate in career exploration into the agSTEM fields and work on employability skills. Applications for the 2019-2020 program are due April 15th at cultivate.unl.edu/scholars.

- [00:00:31.420]By 2050, the agriculture industry will have
- [00:00:34.810]to feed a global population of nine billion people.
- [00:00:38.370]Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, STEM,
- [00:00:42.400]plays a critical role in meeting this goal
- [00:00:45.640]because we must become more innovative than ever before.
- [00:00:49.790]Studies have shown that more diversity in organizations
- [00:00:54.330]increases the level of innovation and creativity.
- [00:00:58.570]However, organizations and businesses in agriculture
- [00:01:02.740]have struggled to increase diversity in the workforce
- [00:01:06.540]because of a lack of qualified candidates
- [00:01:09.510]who come from diverse backgrounds.
- [00:01:12.820]Cultivate ACCESS was created to aid in the effort
- [00:01:16.230]to increase participation of underrepresented groups
- [00:01:20.200]from rural Nebraska in STEM-related agricultural
- [00:01:24.330]career fields through a holistic mentoring
- [00:01:27.420]and development program that engages high school youth
- [00:01:31.170]with career professionals and college students.
- [00:01:34.550]Through participation in Cultivate ACCESS,
- [00:01:37.560]our scholars receive mentoring from a professional
- [00:01:41.030]who has overcome obstacles to get to where they are today
- [00:01:45.060]and interact with college students
- [00:01:47.280]who share insight on what strategies they have used
- [00:01:50.430]to be successful in college.
- [00:01:53.010]Cultivate ACCESS provides students
- [00:01:55.040]with the unique experience of in-depth career exploration
- [00:02:00.060]in the STEM fields
- [00:02:01.890]and development of their leadership, teamwork,
- [00:02:05.170]and communication skills,
- [00:02:07.120]to be highly successful in their personal
- [00:02:10.410]and professional lives.
- [00:02:12.840]So what exactly do high school students do
- [00:02:16.140]once they are in Cultivate ACCESS?
- [00:02:18.860]Cultivate ACCESS runs parallel with the academic year
- [00:02:22.560]and almost all program activities
- [00:02:24.560]and mentoring is received virtually.
- [00:02:27.800]Our program is flexible
- [00:02:29.330]and can be worked around busy schedules
- [00:02:31.700]to fit with every individual's schedule.
- [00:02:35.000]Bi-weekly modules include discussion topics
- [00:02:37.760]provided to career mentors that cover things
- [00:02:40.590]such as sharing their personal career stories,
- [00:02:44.080]how to increase self-efficacy,
- [00:02:47.120]and how to solve problems.
- [00:02:49.630]Towards the end of each module,
- [00:02:51.680]a short journal will be completed by the scholars
- [00:02:54.520]to give them a chance to reflect
- [00:02:56.970]and think about the conversation they had with their mentor.
- [00:03:01.410]This piece is important to help connect the dots
- [00:03:04.800]between what they have learned
- [00:03:06.980]and how they can use that in their lives moving forward.
- [00:03:11.040]Participation in Cultivate ACCESS requires
- [00:03:13.670]at minimum 30 minutes to an hour
- [00:03:17.000]of time commitment each week.
- [00:03:20.420]I am an ambassador in Cultivate ACCESS,
- [00:03:22.890]and I have had a great experience with this program.
- [00:03:26.820]I have learned how to build relationships
- [00:03:29.200]with career professionals in the workforce
- [00:03:32.000]and have also learned how to build relationships
- [00:03:34.470]with students who are still in high school.
- [00:03:37.060]This program helps these students understand
- [00:03:40.290]what opportunities there are with careers that are in STEM.
