- [00:01:21.810]and be on campus, finally, in an official capacity,
- [00:01:24.570]and get to play at the Lied Center tonight.

- [00:01:28.610]Well, I teach a lot.
- [00:01:29.540]In the Bay Area, I teach at the Aspen Festival,
- [00:01:31.910]and I teach in Switzerland every summer.
- [00:01:33.450]But this has a more emotional meaning to me,
- [00:01:37.630]because I didn't even know I could do what I'm doing
- [00:01:40.830]professionally when I was a senior in high school.
- [00:01:42.730]And so, I want to show that it's possible for anyone
- [00:01:45.370]to go this path if they really want to.
- [00:01:48.050]You know, it's a great chance to get some rep out,
- [00:01:50.970]and hear a professional's opinion on the rep,
- [00:01:53.400]but also just to hear his philosophy
- [00:01:55.760]of music and how he handled things
- [00:01:56.990]when he was a student and a professional.
- [00:01:58.393]When I'm on a panel, and when there's people behind
- [00:02:00.920]this very intimidating screen in an audition,
- [00:02:03.310]you can sure as heck believe people
- [00:02:05.010]are rooting for you, not against you.

- [00:02:08.300]is a great program here, from what I can see.
- [00:02:11.470]I know some of my other colleagues
- [00:02:12.690]were doing a panel speech.
- [00:02:14.870]When I was in fourth grade, I wasn't good at sports,
- [00:02:17.780]but I was really good at trombone,
- [00:02:19.630]and it was so good to be good at something
- [00:02:23.450]and to receive recognition from the other kids at my school.
- [00:02:26.584]It's true, when you can look out into an audience
- [00:02:28.940]at the end of Mahler Two, and people are ugly crying.

- [00:02:34.378]It's a total treat for me, especially as one of
- [00:02:36.050]the younger members of the orchestra, to speak to students,
- [00:02:39.260]because I was sitting in those exact chairs
- [00:02:42.340]about, what feels like, 10 minutes ago.
- [00:02:44.550]And I just hope that anything that I've experienced
- [00:02:48.070]since leaving college can be useful to them
- [00:02:50.630]as they figure out their paths in music.
- [00:02:53.850]It was just so amazing that there's this box of wood
- [00:02:56.260]under your chin that you can make noises on
- [00:02:58.950]and you actually get to kind of correspond
- [00:03:02.160]over hundreds of years with J.S. Bach.
- [00:03:04.570]The people that they bring in always have
- [00:03:06.580]a interesting perspective that I haven't
- [00:03:08.860]considered before, studying an instrument.
- [00:03:11.320]And I always learn a lot from the people that they bring.
