- [00:00:00.170]Alright thank you Nick, joined here
- [00:00:01.740]by University of Nebraska-Lincoln Chancellor Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:04.750]The home opener for Husker Baseball two weeks
- [00:00:07.570]after it was scheduled but boy, Old Man Winter
- [00:00:10.250]would not go away and we're certainly, Chancellor,
- [00:00:12.370]feeling the effects of that around the state.
- [00:00:14.480]Some horrific images over the weekend
- [00:00:16.910]and I know the hearts and minds of a lot of folks
- [00:00:19.360]around this state go out to those folks
- [00:00:20.750]dealing with all the flood water.
- [00:00:22.370]Well you know we had the perfect storm,
- [00:00:25.190]I don't know, it's probably not the right word to use here
- [00:00:27.590]but the things that came together all at once
- [00:00:30.185]and created the inclement weather
- [00:00:32.700]that we had last week in the state.
- [00:00:35.230]Lot of people dealing with the aftermath of that.
- [00:00:38.530]Whether it was the blizzard conditions in the Panhandle,
- [00:00:41.430]and lots of folks in particular are dealing with that
- [00:00:44.700]or the extensive flooding all throughout Central
- [00:00:47.740]and South and Eastern Nebraska
- [00:00:51.370]and still recovery efforts will be going on
- [00:00:53.550]for some time as that water moves out.
- [00:00:56.790]And we seek to bring things back
- [00:00:59.030]as close to normal as possible.
- [00:01:00.530]So our thoughts and prayers certainly have been
- [00:01:02.240]with everyone that has been dealing
- [00:01:04.360]with that across the state and we hope
- [00:01:07.470]for as quick of recovery as we can see happen.
- [00:01:10.562]Absolutely.
- [00:01:11.395]Well, we're ready to play some baseball here today
- [00:01:13.470]but I'm gonna ask you about some volleyball news.
- [00:01:15.830]It's always fun to talk about John Cook's squad.
- [00:01:17.850]He loves to take his team out in the spring
- [00:01:19.870]around the state, he's gonna do that again this year.
- [00:01:22.350]Headed out near the Panhandle area.
- [00:01:24.870]What can you tell us about that?
- [00:01:26.290]Well you know the volleyball team always does that.
- [00:01:29.820]Goes out in the state and plays an exhibition match
- [00:01:32.600]and you know this year our lone spring match will be against
- [00:01:37.370]one of my alma maters, Colorado State University.
- [00:01:40.620]It will be out at McCook Community College
- [00:01:42.785]on the 20th of April.
- [00:01:45.080]I know just this past weekend those tickets went on sale
- [00:01:49.070]and I saw the pictures of people lined up down the street
- [00:01:51.827]in excitement for John Cook to bring his group out to McCook
- [00:01:56.501]so very excited about that.
- [00:01:59.870]They played Colorado State in 2017 in Kearney.
- [00:02:04.330]They made recent visits to Grand Island, Wayne,
- [00:02:06.610]Norfolk, and Ogallala so if you can't be in McCook
- [00:02:10.516]and you want to catch that it will be
- [00:02:12.220]on the Huskers Sports Network on April the 20th.
- [00:02:14.750]I'm actually looking forward to being out there myself.
- [00:02:17.398]To be able to take in that exhibition match
- [00:02:20.180]with Husker Volleyball.
- [00:02:21.340]That's gonna be fun.
- [00:02:22.173]We'll let's go up into the Panhandle now
- [00:02:23.410]just up the road from McCook.
- [00:02:24.450]There's been some exciting news
- [00:02:25.848]from the university on some research that could
- [00:02:28.840]expand farming options and add economic value.
- [00:02:31.880]What's the news about that?
- [00:02:33.630]Well Greg, we have had a long and storied presence
- [00:02:39.260]in the whole state around agricultural research
- [00:02:42.920]in particular and that is also true in the Panhandle
- [00:02:46.380]where our Panhandle Research and Extension Center
- [00:02:48.880]has been an anchor for that region of the world
- [00:02:52.230]with ag research for a long time.
- [00:02:54.700]And some of the work that is going on there,
- [00:02:57.320]whether it be in the livestock sector
- [00:02:59.240]or in the crops sector or in the human nutrition sector,
- [00:03:03.520]some of the most important work
- [00:03:05.530]currently is around proso millet.
- [00:03:07.690]Which is a species that's grown mostly in the Great Plains.
- [00:03:13.320]It's originally from Northern China,
- [00:03:15.220]it's where the species originates.
- [00:03:17.710]It's very drought resistant, it's an important crop
- [00:03:20.670]in the Nebraska Panhandle and in Eastern Colorado.
- [00:03:23.890]And we might think of it as being important
- [00:03:26.551]in granola bars or in breads or as an alternative to rice,
- [00:03:31.890]that's how the crop gets used as a cereal.
- [00:03:34.950]And we've had some exciting news here recently
- [00:03:37.770]where our own faculty, James Schnable,
- [00:03:40.850]one of our associate professors
- [00:03:44.069]in agronomy and horticulture.
- [00:03:46.320]He and his colleagues recently sequenced
- [00:03:49.330]more than 90% of the genetic code of proso millet.
- [00:03:53.230]Big deal, so genome sequencing for that species
- [00:03:56.550]so that that technology then can now be used
- [00:04:00.700]to enhance the crop.
- [00:04:04.510]Particularly around drought-resistance and resilience
- [00:04:07.430]and stress to the environmental conditions that are there
- [00:04:10.622]to increase the profitability of that crop
- [00:04:14.470]for farmers in that region.
- [00:04:17.120]So a very exciting development.
- [00:04:19.230]A new genome sequence is published
- [00:04:21.510]in one of the leading scientific journals in the world
- [00:04:23.720]here in the last few weeks led by our researchers
- [00:04:26.255]working in this area.
- [00:04:29.090]We love hearing about the great, exciting research
- [00:04:30.940]being done on campus and the university has also had
- [00:04:33.090]a number of faculty and staff who've recently
- [00:04:35.260]been recognized for their service to students.
- [00:04:38.020]What can you tell us about that?
- [00:04:39.300]Well we are very excited about continued recognition
- [00:04:42.330]of our faculty and this is an annual thing every year.
- [00:04:46.460]The parents association, the UNL Parents Association,
- [00:04:50.130]recognizes faculty who are nominated for their impact
- [00:04:54.700]on students that are recognized by parents
- [00:04:58.310]who nominate faculty for these awards.
- [00:05:01.210]And we have more than 250 this year,
- [00:05:05.084]faculty and staff who were honored earlier this month
- [00:05:09.640]for their support to our students.
- [00:05:12.715]And a pretty special thing.
- [00:05:14.720]I know we have faculty who have been recognized
- [00:05:17.090]over 20 years running with this award
- [00:05:19.940]and it's a very special thing to them.
- [00:05:22.220]Because it's nominated by the students
- [00:05:25.060]and by their parents and their families.
- [00:05:27.320]31st year of awards and this kind of recognition.
- [00:05:32.030]Co-sponsored by our teaching council of the university
- [00:05:35.050]as well as I said earlier the parents association,
- [00:05:37.920]our Office of Student Affairs.
- [00:05:39.540]So we're very proud of this commitment of our faculty,
- [00:05:42.500]it's reflective of the support that we have
- [00:05:46.290]for our student body here and the highest quality education
- [00:05:49.340]being delivered to students from every county in Nebraska
- [00:05:52.630]and 49 states around the country
- [00:05:55.080]and 136 countries around the world.
- [00:05:57.620]Fantastic.
- [00:05:58.453]Well thank you for letting us in on all that.
- [00:05:59.740]Enjoy the rest of your spring break week here on campus.
- [00:06:01.960]Well, it's a quiet week with everything else going on.
- [00:06:06.576]It is spring break and our students are spread out
- [00:06:10.010]but I'm looking forward to a great baseball season
- [00:06:12.450]getting kicked off here.
- [00:06:14.550]Ronnie Green with us here on our pregame show.
- [00:06:16.290]We're back with our first pitch,
- [00:06:17.440]Huskers and Air Force, from Learfield IMG College.
- [00:06:20.240]This is the Huskers Sports Network.
