[00:00:00.160]In this tutorial we will take a look at some of the common formats for
[00:00:04.880]recording data and these are the files which we
[00:00:08.240]generally receive when we get an export from either a data log
[00:00:13.120]or a data logger. The most common format that is used is what is called as a
[00:00:19.520]comma separated values. It essentially is a file containing data
[00:00:24.800]where the data is separated by a comma and appropriately this file is
[00:00:30.960]generally stored within file extension .csv.
[00:00:35.440]Many times instead of using comma separated values
[00:00:39.280]data loggers may use tab as a separator or the delimiter.
[00:00:44.320]In that case it is called as a tab separated values.
[00:00:48.080]In order for us to use applications such as R
[00:00:51.920]for analyzing a given data set it is important
[00:00:54.720]for us to understand how is the data stored
[00:00:57.760]in the files that contain the data.
[00:01:00.560]An easy way to look at that is to use simple text editors
[00:01:04.400]such as what I have listed here.
[00:01:07.040]I have used notepad++ for Windows in the past
[00:01:10.080]and TextWrangler for mac.

[00:01:18.350]platform you are using you may choose one on the other if you already have a
[00:01:22.990]text editor of your choice that you have used feel free to use that. This is the

[00:01:34.150]you may obtain TextWrangler from (barebones.com). I am using TextWrangler so I am going to
[00:01:39.070]open a simple CSV file just to take a quick look and understand how the data
[00:01:44.650]is stored so I have a file which is called as one dot average of interval
[00:01:49.750]dot CSV as I open it I see that line number one contains the names of the
[00:01:55.950]columns for the data in this case we have GroupOn Attribute1 Attribute2
[00:02:02.310]and Attribute3 the columns are separated by a comma. And after line one
[00:02:09.010]the data follows through all the way to the end of the file in this case we have
[00:02:13.990]a total of 40 records each row contains a record set and and data is delimited
[00:02:21.210]by a comma.
