- [00:00:00.174](upbeat music) Welcome back.
- [00:00:02.470]Halftime of the Huskers final regular season game
- [00:00:04.840]against the Iowa Hawkeyes.
- [00:00:06.100]In studio now with
- [00:00:07.166]University of Nebraska-Lincoln Chancellor, Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:09.910]We talk a lot Chancellor about
- [00:00:11.910]how Nebraska's student athletes
- [00:00:13.140]get so much support
- [00:00:14.080]for their play on the field,
- [00:00:15.420]in the classroom, and in life,
- [00:00:16.560]but recently, a Nebraska student athlete
- [00:00:18.600]was recognized for excellence,
- [00:00:20.049]not only as a competitor,
- [00:00:21.480]but as a student and a leader.
- [00:00:23.150]Tell us about that.
- [00:00:24.840]We kinda marvel in a lot of ways, Greg,
- [00:00:27.840]at how talented our student athletes are
- [00:00:30.244]across the board in competition,
- [00:00:32.500]but also academically
- [00:00:35.130]in their pursuit of their degrees
- [00:00:36.900]and their programs on campus,
- [00:00:38.850]and Anton Stephenson certainly is exemplary at that.
- [00:00:44.340]Men's gymnast, on our men's gymnast team,
- [00:00:46.670]and a quite accomplished gymnast on our team.
- [00:00:51.020]He's the second straight Nebraska male student athlete
- [00:00:54.670]to win what's called the Wayne Duke Award.
- [00:00:57.930]It's an award
- [00:00:58.763]that recognizes one man and one woman student athlete
- [00:01:02.690]in the Big Ten that's a senior,
- [00:01:04.660]when they're finishing up their careers,
- [00:01:06.780]for achievements across the board
- [00:01:08.130]in academics, in athletics, in extra curricular activities,
- [00:01:12.010]in leadership on campus, and off campus as well.
- [00:01:16.400]So he's one of five Nebraska athletes
- [00:01:20.080]in the past seven years
- [00:01:21.590]that have won one of these awards, so big deal.
- [00:01:25.920]Anton is a senior.
- [00:01:27.440]He's majoring in nutrition science.
- [00:01:30.290]He's minoring in biochemistry,
- [00:01:32.040]so he's not doing any cakewalk academically here.
- [00:01:36.210]He plans to pursue his education further
- [00:01:39.110]at UNMC at the medical center,
- [00:01:41.500]where he plans to specialize in ophthalmology.
- [00:01:45.130]Also active in the community, active on campus.
- [00:01:48.070]This award recognizes his excellence,
- [00:01:51.140]really across the board.
- [00:01:52.270]So, very proud of him.
- [00:01:53.610]He also I should say was just, just couple nights ago,
- [00:01:57.950]recognized as one of
- [00:01:59.300]the inaugural Student Luminary awardees on campus.
- [00:02:02.910]Student Affairs honored a group of our students
- [00:02:06.200]that are the very cream of the crop
- [00:02:08.270]in terms of leadership across the campus as well.
- [00:02:11.870]So congratulations to Anton.
- [00:02:13.451]Absolutely.
- [00:02:14.284]Well support for students also available across the campus.
- [00:02:17.670]Tell us about some of the new ways
- [00:02:18.503]Nebraska's helping students to succeed.
- [00:02:21.240]Well, you know Greg,
- [00:02:22.250]we talk a lot about
- [00:02:23.320]how we're very, very proud of the fact
- [00:02:26.200]that we're an accessed institution
- [00:02:28.030]to get a highest quality public education
- [00:02:30.210]here at the university,
- [00:02:31.420]at the land-grant university for our state.
- [00:02:34.100]At UNL, we believe in the power of every person
- [00:02:37.350]that comes to us as students,
- [00:02:39.400]and we want them to be as successful as possible.
- [00:02:42.490]So we engage a lot one-on-one with students
- [00:02:45.930]to help them stretch and to find success
- [00:02:49.270]as they're pursing their educations here with us.
- [00:02:52.750]For example,
- [00:02:54.240]we have a new online tool available just this month,
- [00:02:58.230]which is making scheduling of courses
- [00:03:01.260]and the curriculum of our students
- [00:03:02.860]over those four years easier for them,
- [00:03:06.810]and having a way for them to do that
- [00:03:09.250]in the balance of all the other activities
- [00:03:10.950]that they have to balance in their lives,
- [00:03:13.220]to optimize their schedules
- [00:03:14.780]to get through in that four year timeframe
- [00:03:17.040]that we want them to do
- [00:03:19.265]and to be successful in doing.
- [00:03:21.510]So very pleased about that tool coming online.
- [00:03:25.490]We also are working hard to try ways
- [00:03:28.350]to continue to reduce the cost of education to them.
- [00:03:33.620]We had a fall semester effort this past year
- [00:03:36.130]where our faculty participated in a
- [00:03:37.930]new Successful Teaching and Affordable Resources initiative
- [00:03:41.230]centered around textbooks
- [00:03:43.080]and around resources from that side of education.
- [00:03:46.970]Saved our students over $100,000 in that effort,
- [00:03:50.330]just in the first wave,
- [00:03:52.220]and we expect that to continue to grow each semester
- [00:03:55.350]to help kinda contain the cost of education, as you will.
- [00:03:59.140]We're also very proud of
- [00:04:00.910]a reasonably new program on campus
- [00:04:03.410]called the Big Red Resilience & Well-Being effort
- [00:04:06.980]in our Student Affairs division of the campus.
- [00:04:10.120]We're working with students
- [00:04:12.060]to better understand emotions and managing stress
- [00:04:14.820]and building strength in their daily work on campus,
- [00:04:19.250]how to connect better with others,
- [00:04:21.670]how to develop grit, if you wanna think of it that way,
- [00:04:25.070]and navigate the transitions, especially in
- [00:04:27.700]that first year and second year of their education.
- [00:04:31.570]Much of that is through peer learnings,
- [00:04:33.420]so we have a new set of peer mentors,
- [00:04:35.730]so students who are helping other students
- [00:04:38.380]through that Big Red Resilience program.
- [00:04:40.800]Very proud of what they're doing
- [00:04:42.080]and about the initial efforts
- [00:04:43.730]to continue to build success in our student body.
- [00:04:46.779]Very good.
- [00:04:47.612]I know the university has a strong offering
- [00:04:49.200]of career services support
- [00:04:50.540]to help students understand
- [00:04:51.590]how to align their strengths in internships and jobs,
- [00:04:54.240]isn't that right?
- [00:04:55.260]It is.
- [00:04:56.140]You know, ultimately,
- [00:04:57.690]we want our students to go out and be successful
- [00:05:00.830]when they complete their degrees with us
- [00:05:04.350]and as they go into their own career paths,
- [00:05:08.100]and we're very proud of our placement rates
- [00:05:10.340]across the board in terms of our students
- [00:05:12.630]when their educations are completed
- [00:05:15.270]where they go into the workforce
- [00:05:17.230]and they go into life,
- [00:05:18.560]whatever that next stage is for them.
- [00:05:22.220]Part of that is through the curriculum, obviously,
- [00:05:24.620]and we work hard in all of our curricula
- [00:05:27.290]to help prepare students for that workforce,
- [00:05:31.190]and help them prepare for as they enter the workforce,
- [00:05:34.360]looking for
- [00:05:36.580]that first career or job out of school.
- [00:05:41.380]We're just finishing up the third of three
- [00:05:43.820]of our career fairs,
- [00:05:45.190]our big spring career fair's in the year
- [00:05:47.990]with Career Services on campus.
- [00:05:50.000]So far this year, nearly 1,800 of our students
- [00:05:53.150]have had opportunities to connect face-to-face
- [00:05:55.450]with over 240 potential employers,
- [00:05:58.150]come to these fairs, engage with our students,
- [00:06:00.990]and make that first, for many of them,
- [00:06:02.960]first contact point, if you will, in that process for them.
- [00:06:07.730]All of that and all the other things
- [00:06:09.330]that we are doing, continue to support our students,
- [00:06:13.468]has led the Princeton Review to continue to name
- [00:06:16.270]us as one of the best value colleges and universities
- [00:06:19.780]in the country, based on the quality of the education
- [00:06:23.010]that we deliver here across the board,
- [00:06:25.420]the affordability, the access to that education,
- [00:06:28.777]and the strong career prospects and placements
- [00:06:31.660]of where our students are going to use that education
- [00:06:34.696]and be successful in life moving forward.
- [00:06:37.895]Very good.
- [00:06:38.728]Well enjoy the second half of this one.
- [00:06:40.310]Well, certainly will,
- [00:06:41.470]and go Big Red!
- [00:06:42.730]Ronnie Green with us here at halftime.
- [00:06:44.000]We've got more halftime coming up next.
