- [00:00:00.441](upbeat music)
- [00:00:02.170]My name is Yahid and I am a microbiology major.
- [00:00:05.560]The diversity that exists in the world of microbiology
- [00:00:08.880]is definitely immense.
- [00:00:12.900]For the last year, I've been working
- [00:00:14.700]in Dr. Wiebe's virology lab.
- [00:00:17.230]I've really come to enjoy the moments I've gotten to spend
- [00:00:20.210]with him throughout the lab as well as being a student
- [00:00:23.100]in his course.
- [00:00:26.120]So, the work that I've been doing in the lab
- [00:00:27.710]for the last year has been to clone
- [00:00:30.055]and vectorize the bovine virus in hopes
- [00:00:34.290]of creating a vaccine against the swine flu in swine.
- [00:00:39.340]I think research has really helped prepare me
- [00:00:41.870]not just for trying to feed my own curiosity
- [00:00:46.150]but also in understanding the adversity that comes just
- [00:00:50.040]in general with life.
- [00:00:52.840]I'm currently the president of my fraternity
- [00:00:55.060]Sigma Lambda Beta.
- [00:00:58.270]Me and my fraternity brothers are about to start strolling
- [00:01:01.820]which is something that multicultural fraternities do
- [00:01:04.910]and really helps us unwind from a busy day
- [00:01:07.751]or really just feel the connection with each other
- [00:01:11.940]as we do something that we all really enjoy doing together.
- [00:01:18.980]I have been involved with the Army ROTC program here
- [00:01:21.930]at the university since my freshman year
- [00:01:24.750]and honestly I'm a better leader and just a better person
- [00:01:28.340]in general because of it.
- [00:01:32.710]So, today we're doing a military exercise.
- [00:01:34.970]We are helping the cadets in the program really develop
- [00:01:39.670]their leadership and teamwork skills.
- [00:01:43.606]Currently, as it stands, I got accepted into medical school
- [00:01:45.950]so I'll be going to medical school at
- [00:01:48.190]military medical school in Bethesda, Maryland
- [00:01:50.670]and so I'll get to be an active duty doctor
- [00:01:54.660]in the military, in the army so that's really the goal
- [00:01:57.360]and I think microbiology played a huge role
- [00:01:59.530]because it allowed me to understand some
- [00:02:02.100]of the new research that is coming out with how much
- [00:02:04.740]of a pivotal role microbiology just plays.
- [00:02:10.170]Microbiology was a really great choice in selecting
- [00:02:13.270]for my major and it's definitely setting me up for success
- [00:02:16.760]so I'm definitely glad I made the decision to come
- [00:02:19.220]to Nebraska.
