- [00:00:05.990]by University of Nebraska-Lincoln Chancellor Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:08.910]Final home game for the women,
- [00:00:10.280]final night for some seniors.
- [00:00:11.592]One of them we hope
- [00:00:12.520]to get back next year in Kristian Hudson.
- [00:00:14.060]But Maddie Simon, from right here in Lincoln,
- [00:00:15.451]her senior night.
- [00:00:16.472]It always really kind of a special moment
- [00:00:20.402]to both thank, and salute,
- [00:00:22.980]and wish best wishes for the future,
- [00:00:26.610]and students who have competed here at Nebraska
- [00:00:29.210]across all of our sports.
- [00:00:30.380]And, tonight's a special night for that for Maddie,
- [00:00:32.403]as you mentioned from Lincoln Pius X here in Lincoln,
- [00:00:37.500]and has a great career here at Nebraska.
- [00:00:39.580]And certainly wish her the best
- [00:00:40.990]as she goes into this next phase of her life
- [00:00:43.213]equipped with a Husker degree.
- [00:00:44.890]Very good for her.
- [00:00:46.290]Well, recently you got some exciting news
- [00:00:48.210]about some Nebraska students
- [00:00:49.530]that are earning national fellowships at a rate
- [00:00:52.510]that compares with some pretty hefty folks
- [00:00:55.070]in higher education.
- [00:00:56.330]Yeah it's, Greg we're really proud of our
- [00:00:58.683]international engagement of both
- [00:01:00.970]our students out into the world,
- [00:01:02.680]as well as students coming to us here
- [00:01:04.664]and participating with us
- [00:01:06.330]at the University of Nebraska.
- [00:01:07.730]And, one of the areas we've had
- [00:01:09.310]a huge amount of success in over the years
- [00:01:11.344]is the Fulbright program through the US State Department.
- [00:01:14.940]It's the US government's
- [00:01:16.160]flagship international educational exchange program,
- [00:01:19.480]where American students go around the world.
- [00:01:22.300]Often teaching English,
- [00:01:23.752]often working in countries around the world
- [00:01:27.003]in English education.
- [00:01:29.090]And we've been amongst the top producers
- [00:01:30.693]of Fulbright scholar students
- [00:01:32.811]going around the world for sometime.
- [00:01:35.190]But, we've just found out here in the last few weeks
- [00:01:37.881]that we're in the 2018-19 US top producing list
- [00:01:43.650]of institutions nationally
- [00:01:45.930]in the number of these awards
- [00:01:47.540]that our students have won.
- [00:01:49.712]We're on that list in 2012 and '13,
- [00:01:53.170]so it's nice to be back on it again here in 2018.
- [00:01:56.610]It puts us in some pretty high company.
- [00:01:58.613]We had, in that year, 44 students who applied
- [00:02:02.693]for Fulbright opportunities around the world.
- [00:02:05.870]We had 14 who were awarded,
- [00:02:07.950]one of the highest kind of,
- [00:02:08.904]yield rates if you want to think about, success rates
- [00:02:12.093]in those applicants of any institution in the country.
- [00:02:16.010]For example, Yale.
- [00:02:17.560]You know, we think of the Ivy League,
- [00:02:19.230]and the Ivy League so to speak, right?
- [00:02:22.640]And Yale had the same number of awards,
- [00:02:25.670]but they had 68 people apply
- [00:02:27.373]for those positions around the world.
- [00:02:30.590]So, we're very pleased about that.
- [00:02:32.230]Puts us in the league with Yale, and Harvard,
- [00:02:34.340]and Columbia in the Ivy League, Stanford,
- [00:02:36.613]University of Chicago, Cal-Berkeley.
- [00:02:40.070]Institutions that often get mentioned
- [00:02:42.130]as amongst the most elite in the world.
- [00:02:46.460]And, I kind of want to do just a shout-out here.
- [00:02:49.360]One of the people that makes this happen is Laura Dama,
- [00:02:52.383]who is an advisor in the Honors Program.
- [00:02:55.770]She has worked for a number of years
- [00:02:58.424]in the Honors Program in working with
- [00:03:00.853]Fulbright scholarship applications.
- [00:03:03.143]And, she has a lot of input into this success,
- [00:03:06.430]and just want to call her out for that excellence
- [00:03:08.663]in working with our talented students
- [00:03:11.160]who will go all over the world,
- [00:03:12.610]and have impact through these Fulbright scholarships.
- [00:03:15.830]Thank her for all that great work,
- [00:03:17.130]and congratulations to all the honorees,
- [00:03:18.880]and even the ones who applied.
- [00:03:19.940]That's amazing.
- [00:03:21.140]Not only is Nebraska, are the students taken
- [00:03:22.991]opportunities to engage with the world.
- [00:03:25.370]The university brings in scholars
- [00:03:26.890]from around the world to engage with the students.
- [00:03:29.222]What's the latest news in global engagement
- [00:03:31.890]here on campus?
- [00:03:32.960]Well, I mentioned earlier you know,
- [00:03:34.700]that we send students out and we bring students here.
- [00:03:36.953]And, a program that we've had now
- [00:03:38.970]for last several years that we've been selected for
- [00:03:42.133]is the Mandela Washington Fellowship program
- [00:03:45.653]for young African leaders,
- [00:03:47.790]from particularly the southern part of Africa.
- [00:03:51.310]It's also a part of the US Department of State,
- [00:03:53.821]its Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
- [00:03:58.470]It's a program where 25 emerging leaders
- [00:04:02.540]who are highly selected from these countries
- [00:04:04.860]across Southern Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa
- [00:04:07.320]if you want to think of it that way,
- [00:04:09.130]come for a six week academic
- [00:04:11.130]and civic engagement course at the university.
- [00:04:14.063]I remember this really well,
- [00:04:15.922]because one of our daughters was actually an advisor
- [00:04:19.023]for the first group of these students
- [00:04:20.970]who came here several years ago from Africa.
- [00:04:23.530]And, remember how bright, and engaging, and amazing
- [00:04:26.730]these students really are.
- [00:04:28.941]We're one of 27 institutions
- [00:04:30.663]that are selected to serve as institute partners
- [00:04:33.450]through this program.
- [00:04:34.594]And again, in a shout-out to our people,
- [00:04:37.893]Maegan Stevens-Liska,
- [00:04:40.480]who is our Director of the Office of Global Strategies
- [00:04:43.180]in our international programs.
- [00:04:44.640]And Linda Major,
- [00:04:45.670]Director for the Center of Civic Engagement
- [00:04:47.512]in our student affairs group,
- [00:04:49.920]are the leaders in this program
- [00:04:51.362]who have brought this here,
- [00:04:52.669]and continue to lead it
- [00:04:53.871]for these dynamic, young leaders from across Africa.
- [00:04:58.781]So very, very pleased about that.
- [00:05:00.180]Pleased about the opportunity to be selected again
- [00:05:02.540]for this program this year,
- [00:05:04.290]and looking forward to this next cohort
- [00:05:06.050]of Mandela Fellows on our campus.
- [00:05:07.541]Fantastic.
- [00:05:08.374]Well, thank you so much for updating us on that.
- [00:05:09.930]Always great to see you.
- [00:05:10.763]Enjoy the rest of the game.
- [00:05:11.910]It's great to be here, and go Big Red.
- [00:05:13.701]Ronnie Green with us here at halftime.
- [00:05:15.530]We've got more halftime coming up next.
