- [00:00:08.380]Well after all the conversation that we had at our table
- [00:00:10.916]and hearing people here, I feel like all of you
- [00:00:12.857]should be up here giving my speech for me.
- [00:00:16.910]I'm really glad.
- [00:00:18.019](mumbles)
- [00:00:21.380]I'm Bob Wilhelm, as he said,
- [00:00:22.820]Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development.
- [00:00:26.250]It's really been a pleasure to be with you here today.
- [00:00:29.330]I know that this has been, or I hear that it's been,
- [00:00:32.110]an intense program for you.
- [00:00:35.090]A few people seem a little tired.
- [00:00:36.310]It sounds like all of your sponsors
- [00:00:39.030]have really kept you at it here for a couple a days,
- [00:00:41.853]and I've heard many things that you've learned
- [00:00:43.990]so really glad that we could all be a part of this with you.
- [00:00:48.300]The range of the people and the programs that I've seen
- [00:00:50.452]in the program for this event is very impressive,
- [00:00:54.630]and as a university we're just very proud
- [00:00:57.940]that we can host you here and for you to see
- [00:01:02.190]some of the kind of students and the student you can be
- [00:01:05.320]whether you're here at Lincoln campus
- [00:01:07.200]or many other opportunities that you ought to consider
- [00:01:10.880]in terms of going on for a four-year program.
- [00:01:14.940]I really want to thank Judy Gaiashkibos.
- [00:01:17.720]I know she wasn't able to get here with us today, but
- [00:01:21.770]Executive Director of Nebraska Commission on Indian Affairs,
- [00:01:24.630]she takes a very strong interest in this program.
- [00:01:26.710]I know that you heard from her, what was it, last night?
- [00:01:30.930]And, of course, Dr. Rowlett, we're really,
- [00:01:33.694]we're just very, very proud of all of the commitment,
- [00:01:36.920]the dedication that you put in,
- [00:01:38.290]and all of your team put in
- [00:01:40.410]to make this a very compelling program.
- [00:01:45.042]The Mid-America Transportation Center has had lot to do
- [00:01:49.770]with making this MATC's Scholar Program possible,
- [00:01:53.080]and very successful, and very sustained, so great job.
- [00:01:58.683](speaker and audience clap)
- [00:02:03.650]Do you ever have people return for second round?
- [00:02:08.559]If we have room we encourage it.
- [00:02:11.390]Nice, okay, so I said a little bit
- [00:02:15.760]about what I do at the university.
- [00:02:17.360]There's, as you saw, all sorts of people
- [00:02:20.390]thinking about all sorts of things
- [00:02:22.940]at a university like the University of Nebraska,
- [00:02:25.620]spanning from people that really take an interest
- [00:02:28.230]in writing, whether they're in the journalism school,
- [00:02:30.420]the English Department, of course lots of engineers,
- [00:02:33.970]we got plenty of 'em around the groups here today,
- [00:02:36.500]but, of course people that are working in medical studies,
- [00:02:39.740]entrepreneurship, many many different ideas
- [00:02:43.100]that people are coming up with.
- [00:02:44.570]Of course also the creative arts are very strong here,
- [00:02:47.470]so there are many opportunities for you here,
- [00:02:51.100]and I work with all of the faculty and the students
- [00:02:53.600]to help them really push ahead and come up with new ideas
- [00:02:57.700]and to make those ideas into things
- [00:03:00.100]that we can either think about in terms of
- [00:03:03.424]being a more human society or think about in terms
- [00:03:07.460]of changing the world in terms of our standard of living
- [00:03:10.740]or keeping the world in a safe place.
- [00:03:14.010]So it's a great job and along the way
- [00:03:17.460]I've had some great experiences working on things
- [00:03:20.850]to make things happen whether it was in engineering
- [00:03:23.800]or in the writing that I've done.
- [00:03:25.960]I really hope that you'll have a great time forward
- [00:03:29.010]as you start to think about
- [00:03:30.410]coming to a university to finish a four-year degree.
- [00:03:35.640]As I've said, I've spent a good amount of my time
- [00:03:38.160]outside of the university, but 25 years,
- [00:03:42.190]this is actually my 26th year
- [00:03:43.770]being a part of the university,
- [00:03:45.960]and the university I'm really proud to think about that,
- [00:03:48.640]that the mission of the university is to
- [00:03:51.813]build and to maintain a culture and that culture
- [00:03:54.910]comes again from many different kinds of ideas,
- [00:03:58.640]many areas of study whether they're in engineering,
- [00:04:02.000]teaching, arts, political science, cultural studies,
- [00:04:06.550]and I hope that you'll think about that
- [00:04:08.430]as part of your opportunity.
- [00:04:10.160]To come to university, you have a chance
- [00:04:12.700]to take a part of a lot of things.
- [00:04:16.913]I hope I heard from many that I talk to today,
- [00:04:20.213]you found that even though this is a big place,
- [00:04:22.570]and there's a lot of variety,
- [00:04:24.020]that there's also a way to find your place here,
- [00:04:26.250]to find a group that you can be comfortable with you know
- [00:04:29.690]and work as you take in different parts of the university.
- [00:04:33.410]So again, I have high hopes for you,
- [00:04:36.880]I really want you to be leaders in the universities
- [00:04:40.990]that you join as students and perhaps,
- [00:04:44.620]I've heard several people talk about even doctoral degrees.
- [00:04:47.730]That was the most fun I had in terms of my schooling,
- [00:04:50.490]so I wish you a very good experience
- [00:04:55.470]in terms of moving on moving ahead
- [00:04:57.300]with even further studies at university.
- [00:05:01.740]The Scholars Program is meant to provide you
- [00:05:04.200]with information and experiences.
- [00:05:06.050]Sounds like we packed it in pretty good here
- [00:05:08.050]to really to tell you a lot of the possibilities
- [00:05:11.370]in terms of four-year program,
- [00:05:14.640]and we also want to make sure that you take away
- [00:05:17.710]that we're interested to help you think about
- [00:05:19.920]what's most important for you, what your path is
- [00:05:22.672]and how that might coincide.
- [00:05:25.763]Hearing about just your experiences and what you're studying
- [00:05:28.850]you have many different paths,
- [00:05:30.660]and we're glad that we can be a part of that
- [00:05:33.750]to help you think about what you're gonna do in the future.
- [00:05:36.520]I wanna close just by saying that
- [00:05:39.810]we really wanna thank again,
- [00:05:40.643]the students and the faculty from UNL
- [00:05:42.990]and the staff and other institutions
- [00:05:45.660]that have joined with us here for this program.
- [00:05:48.980]It's been a very special one.
- [00:05:51.510]As a university, many times we talk
- [00:05:54.230]about results and impact and the like,
- [00:05:57.290]but our greatest results and our greatest impact
- [00:06:00.030]are the talented students
- [00:06:02.010]that we draw together inter-community to learn and to grow,
- [00:06:07.160]and I hope that you'll be able to find the right place
- [00:06:10.290]in the next few years to join into that as well.
- [00:06:13.540]So thanks and we're really glad to be here with you today.
