- [00:00:29.810]And we're here today to talk about
- [00:00:31.710]the Midwest Roadside Safety Facility,
- [00:00:33.990]and just some of the great things that they've done
- [00:00:36.120]over the course of their history.
- [00:00:38.070]This is an anniversary year for them, the 20th year
- [00:00:41.610]I believe of the safer barrier.
- [00:00:43.550]From the instillation of the safer barrier
- [00:00:46.220]in Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1998,
- [00:00:48.760]it has been one of the biggest innovations
- [00:00:51.490]in Auto racing, including saving numerous lives
- [00:00:55.470]and preventing major injuries to drivers.
- [00:00:58.500]But that's not all the Midwest Roadside Safety Facility does
- [00:01:01.610]their work is seen all over the world
- [00:01:04.000]and in basically every roadway in the country.
- [00:01:07.100]We would like to talk to Cody and Bob and get
- [00:01:09.420]more information about what it is that they do
- [00:01:11.890]and where we can see their work.
- [00:01:14.510]So welcome Cody, welcome Bob, we'll start with
- [00:01:17.820]asking what work is being done right now at the
- [00:01:20.330]Midwest Roadside Safety Facility to improve
- [00:01:22.780]the lives of all people around the world?
- [00:01:25.270]Sure, so our main focus really is highway safety,
- [00:01:28.380]and that's been our focus since the facility started
- [00:01:31.610]back in the 80s.
- [00:01:33.300]What we're really looking to do is, if a vehicle goes
- [00:01:35.980]off the road, how we keep that driver safe.
- [00:01:38.200]So we try to design the roadside to be safer,
- [00:01:40.420]weather that's making, getting rid of hazards
- [00:01:43.040]or obstacles that are on the side of the road,
- [00:01:44.720]so if you go off the road you don't impact them
- [00:01:46.850]or designing barriers to keep you safe,
- [00:01:49.630]to keep you away from hazards on the side of the roads.
- [00:01:51.580]So we've been doing that for a lot of years
- [00:01:53.410]and that's been our main focus,
- [00:01:55.500]when it comes to the safety aspect and then there's
- [00:01:57.900]other things that we've looked at over time.
- [00:02:00.160]You mentioned the safer barrier, that's a pretty neat thing
- [00:02:02.390]that we got an opportunity to do over time.
- [00:02:04.980]And Dr. Stolle's done a lot of work looking at
- [00:02:08.080]department of defense applications.
- [00:02:09.790]Yeah we have, using the background in vehicle
- [00:02:12.460]dynamics and crash relevance we were able to
- [00:02:15.040]design some very innovative features for
- [00:02:18.210]the Department of Transportation and
- [00:02:20.730]Department of Defense, protecting military
- [00:02:23.200]insulation from people who might be of nefarious intent
- [00:02:26.260]trying to cause some havoc, maybe destroy some buildings
- [00:02:29.870]or harm some people.
- [00:02:31.480]We can safely guide them to the side of the road
- [00:02:33.510]where their vehicle is disabled and where they can be
- [00:02:35.640]captured, while at the same time safely protecting
- [00:02:38.420]those people who use the facilities every day.
- [00:02:40.610]So your work is not just here in the state of Nebraska
- [00:02:44.510]we're having an impact, not nationally but worldwide as well
- [00:02:48.170]it's not just Nebraska doing the work,
- [00:02:50.350]you mentioned earlier when we were talking
- [00:02:53.860]about another anniversary that's Midwest Pooled Fund
- [00:02:56.490]program, can you kind of explain what that is
- [00:02:58.580]and why Midwest is central in that?
- [00:03:00.930]Yeah the Midwest Pooled Fund Program started back
- [00:03:03.610]in the late 80's and the idea was at the time
- [00:03:06.010]that a lot of states had roadside safety needs
- [00:03:08.920]trying to get any one state to fund the crash testing
- [00:03:11.720]development of some of these roadside safety applications
- [00:03:14.930]is fairly expensive.
- [00:03:16.570]So the idea was to get a group of states
- [00:03:18.480]and originally it was in the Midwest so it started with
- [00:03:21.160]Kansas and Iowa and Nebraska and those states
- [00:03:24.310]and Missouri and trying to get them all together
- [00:03:26.710]so it started with a group of four to five states
- [00:03:29.060]and it's grown now it's 19 states and our states
- [00:03:31.490]range from California to New Jersey.
- [00:03:33.920]You know a lot of states in the middle of the country
- [00:03:35.550]as well and so those states, for the last 30 years have been
- [00:03:39.030]funding, they get together, they bring all their safety
- [00:03:41.670]problems to us and we talk to them about them,
- [00:03:44.070]propose solutions to them.
- [00:03:45.810]And then they prioritize which ones each year they want
- [00:03:48.260]to do to try and address what's their highest priority
- [00:03:51.160]needs and right now that's about a $1.2 million
- [00:03:54.000]per year program of research fundings.
- [00:03:55.720]So it's probably the largest pooled fund program
- [00:03:58.950]of it's kind in the country,
- [00:04:01.140]and it really is addressing the safety needs
- [00:04:03.450]for the entire country, not just Nebraska specifically.
- [00:04:06.600]And you have a very unique facility,
- [00:04:09.130]and we're not talking about the offices
- [00:04:10.710]at Whittier Hall,
- [00:04:12.720]you're talking about the testing facility you have
- [00:04:14.700]out at the Lincoln Airport.
- [00:04:15.960]What kind of work can you do out there to innovate
- [00:04:18.540]in the field of highway safety?
- [00:04:20.580]The kinds of work that we like to do is really
- [00:04:22.540]anything that's dynamic, if it impacts,
- [00:04:25.030]if it crashes together, we can generally perform that.
- [00:04:28.250]We've everything from real vehicles that we've purchased
- [00:04:30.510]on fleets to surrogate vehicles that we create,
- [00:04:33.680]fabricate in house so we can use them
- [00:04:35.280]over and over and over again.
- [00:04:37.410]Doing some very challenging things.
- [00:04:39.460]We can do speeds as low as 30 miles per hour,
- [00:04:41.500]or upwards is as much as 180 for safer tests.
- [00:04:44.998]Wow.
- [00:04:45.940]We test vehicles from small cars all the way
- [00:04:47.960]to semi tractor trailers, so it's a very fully functional
- [00:04:51.680]type of environment.
- [00:04:53.570]And even beyond the crash testing we do other types of tests
- [00:04:57.090]that evaluate components where we don't even need
- [00:04:59.470]a vehicle at all, we can measure the properties
- [00:05:02.210]of those components and see how they react
- [00:05:04.650]under a dynamic environment and the types of materials
- [00:05:08.030]that are used in those components,
- [00:05:10.120]and evaluating and compare those.
- [00:05:12.000]Yeah I've had the pleasure of seeing three
- [00:05:13.930]of the tests and I've seen everything from a semi
- [00:05:15.870]going into a safer barrier wall to a pick up truck
- [00:05:19.250]hitting a guard rail and then the most recent one
- [00:05:22.790]was knocking over some signs and just seeing
- [00:05:26.040]how you guys measure it and everything,
- [00:05:28.460]it's so fascinating to watch, the high speed cameras
- [00:05:32.060]that you have, the drones, everything it's just
- [00:05:34.810]an amazing event to watch even.
- [00:05:37.300]So I'm sure you guys get out of each of those tests
- [00:05:39.820]that you're doing.
- [00:05:40.834]Yeah, yeah it certainly never gets boring for us,
- [00:05:43.280]I've been doing it for 20 years and I still get
- [00:05:44.980]pretty excited on test day.
- [00:05:46.220]Yeah we can do, you know the stuff, the information
- [00:05:49.130]we collect in those tests is very high-tech research
- [00:05:53.160]that we're doing out there, we're able to measure
- [00:05:55.010]how the barrier reacts, how the vehicle reacts,
- [00:05:57.210]weather or not the occupant would be safe.
- [00:05:59.040]And like Cody said that can span a pretty broad spectrum
- [00:06:02.250]of types of impacts,
- [00:06:03.890]and we intend to extend that in the future,
- [00:06:06.610]right now, you know we wrote the crash testing standard,
- [00:06:10.640]that document is what all the lab's are using
- [00:06:13.260]to test roadside hardware and that will expand
- [00:06:16.810]if we keep pushing the boundaries of what that document's
- [00:06:19.530]gonna include so one of the things that we,
- [00:06:21.810]Cody and I looked at is looking at non tracking impact
- [00:06:24.570]right now we do all our impacts as impacts
- [00:06:26.810]of the vehicle tracking into a barrier in a straight line
- [00:06:29.730]essentially, different angles and speeds.
- [00:06:32.080]One of the things we've found through accident investigation
- [00:06:34.200]is that's not necessarily true, up to 40% of
- [00:06:36.630]our impacts are actually vehicles that are spinning
- [00:06:38.730]or non tracking, not going straight into a barrier.
- [00:06:41.780]That's something we want to expand on in the future
- [00:06:43.940]and I think with our test facility, again as Cody mentioned,
- [00:06:47.470]we run tests that no where else has in the world,
- [00:06:50.200]the stuff that we did for the safer barrier, those are,
- [00:06:52.290]as far as I know, no one's ever tested over 70 miles
- [00:06:54.710]an hour, we get 150 plus miles an hour.
- [00:06:57.440]So we also think we can throw things into barriers,
- [00:07:01.670]vehicles into barriers in non tracking impacts,
- [00:07:04.610]where they'll be spinning and yawing
- [00:07:06.758]as they impact the barrier, so that's kinda the next step.
- [00:07:09.080]So we keep trying to, every year, every time we get
- [00:07:12.080]new research, tryna kind and push the envelope of
- [00:07:14.160]what we can test and how we test it and trying to
- [00:07:16.730]collect better data.
- [00:07:17.950]It sounds like it'd be kinda fun,
- [00:07:19.390]you get to think up ways to destroy cars and trucks right?
- [00:07:22.830]It's like every little kids dream is crashing
- [00:07:26.520]your tonka trucks or your hot wheels right?
- [00:07:28.790]You guys are actually doing it and saving lives
- [00:07:31.184]and it benefits, is that what got you into this field is
- [00:07:34.790]your love for cars or is it your wanting to solve problems?
- [00:07:38.260]Absolutely I mean I can say that when I first started
- [00:07:41.070]my research in Midwest one of the first projects
- [00:07:43.530]I did was to evaluate real crashes, federal databases
- [00:07:47.380]and real crashes and the types of impacts
- [00:07:50.090]in the conditions that we saw.
- [00:07:51.770]And from that I was deeply effected,
- [00:07:54.740]to see the devastation it can cause
- [00:07:56.560]when a car hit's something that it wasn't supposed to hit
- [00:07:59.580]something near the side of the road.
- [00:08:01.400]Trees are the number one killer of drivers
- [00:08:04.260]who are on the side of the road, if they impact a tree
- [00:08:06.780]or utility pole, 3500 deaths every year for trees
- [00:08:09.700]and 1000 more for utility poles, it's a substantial problem
- [00:08:12.740]and it hasn't gone away in 40 years.
- [00:08:14.650]And it's the types of very heart breaking crashes
- [00:08:18.680]that really motivated me to go deeper.
- [00:08:20.910]To work with all the staff in Midwest
- [00:08:23.930]and to expand that research, covering everything
- [00:08:26.750]from barrier design, to safer road features
- [00:08:29.600]and slopes and bridge spans and features
- [00:08:32.950]that are resilient to impact from trucks
- [00:08:36.360]that are occurring underneath the bridge.
- [00:08:38.720]And to really push the envelope like Bob said
- [00:08:41.080]go where people haven't gone before.
- [00:08:43.080]And really make the entire transportation grid safer.
- [00:08:45.550]Yeah I think, one of the aspects at least for me
- [00:08:47.680]that's kept me interested in the facility,
- [00:08:49.920]there's obviously the safety aspect and the aspect that you
- [00:08:52.150]are helping keep people safe and that you know,
- [00:08:54.740]it's very satisfying on that level.
- [00:08:56.930]Another aspect is, it's very technical, it's very difficult
- [00:08:59.800]and the problem's always changing, so one of the things
- [00:09:02.380]when I was in school, you know when I was a mechanical
- [00:09:05.240]engineering student and I told myself, I really like
- [00:09:08.000]mechanical engineering, I don't want to design car door
- [00:09:10.370]handles for the next 30 years.
- [00:09:12.160]And you can do that and it's a great thing,
- [00:09:13.880]somebody has to design door handles, I didn't want
- [00:09:15.870]to do that for my long term job.
- [00:09:18.490]So one of the benefits of working in a research place
- [00:09:20.700]like this is that problem always changes,
- [00:09:22.680]you can move the problems to what is most important
- [00:09:25.690]and what's the highest priority in our field and
- [00:09:28.210]keep kind of pushing the boundaries and that keeps the job
- [00:09:30.710]very interesting and it is very technical.
- [00:09:32.810]One of the things that got me interested is that
- [00:09:34.450]we're one of the, the main centers in the country
- [00:09:36.760]that does computer simulation work for roadside crashes.
- [00:09:40.540]So we use a program called LS-DYNA, which is,
- [00:09:42.750]the auto industry uses, sports industries use,
- [00:09:46.120]it's the cutting edge on computer simulations.
- [00:09:48.430]So we can model the crashes before and after we run them
- [00:09:51.350]to learn more about them, that's stuff that you don't
- [00:09:53.570]get at every university in the country,
- [00:09:55.480]and so that was another thing, you know we,
- [00:09:57.950]it's very technical, it has a satisfying goal
- [00:10:00.610]and outcome and the problem's always changing
- [00:10:02.680]so that, that makes it a great place to work everyday.
- [00:10:05.820]Well this is the Complete Engineering Podcast,

- [00:10:11.390]we have here at the University of Nebraska.
- [00:10:13.520]It's made up of six main competencies,
- [00:10:15.290]Intercultural Appreciation, Leadership, Self-Management,
- [00:10:18.560]Service and Civic Responsibility, Teamwork and
- [00:10:20.780]Understanding of Engineering Ethics.
- [00:10:22.890]I guess going over those six, I'm sure that very one
- [00:10:26.790]of them are touched on within the Midwest Roadside Facility,
- [00:10:31.250]but how would you say, how does it help
- [00:10:33.460]develop complete engineers?
- [00:10:36.010]Definitely an aspect of our complete engineers
- [00:10:38.700]is we try to take new young engineers, expose them
- [00:10:42.000]not only to the research world, but also to their
- [00:10:44.120]professional responsibilities to that world that we live in.
- [00:10:47.970]We feel it's a very important aspect of our lives
- [00:10:50.420]to train students into leaders, to be the next managers,
- [00:10:53.740]to be the next decision makers of the future.
- [00:10:56.600]And so our students are trained to handle decisions,
- [00:10:59.280]to complete their own projects from start to end,
- [00:11:02.320]to conduct their own planning and to look out for
- [00:11:04.630]who they're around and how they can enrich the lives
- [00:11:06.550]of those who are near to them.
- [00:11:08.600]And to look out for safety reasons and the underlying
- [00:11:11.240]causes for the real problems.
- [00:11:12.930]If I'm a student and I'm interested in working
- [00:11:15.740]at Midwest Roadside Safety Facility, how do I go about
- [00:11:18.910]making contact with he people that can help me
- [00:11:22.010]get that goal achieved?
- [00:11:23.910]Sure we've got a website and that's probably the easiest
- [00:11:26.370]way to generally get a hold of us and get a role in
- [00:11:28.510]the University directory's and things
- [00:11:30.280]so that's fairly straightforward but we take engineers,
- [00:11:33.540]Cody is a good example, Cody started working for us
- [00:11:35.680]when you were what, 18?
- [00:11:37.090]Yeah
- [00:11:38.860]So I mean you can, we've had, one of the thing's we do
- [00:11:42.090]is we kind of develop a lot of our engineers in house.
- [00:11:44.680]And so we have undergrad students do a line share
- [00:11:48.060]of our work and analyzing test data and as a matter of fact
- [00:11:51.000]we can't do it without our student workers.
- [00:11:53.930]Our full time staff is fairly small, the students
- [00:11:56.810]make up the majority of our staff.
- [00:11:58.870]So our students are the ones who put our candler audience
- [00:12:02.310]together for our systems, they're the ones that help us
- [00:12:04.460]analyze the test data, they're out there on test days
- [00:12:07.410]documenting tests, that's mostly the undergrad students
- [00:12:10.330]and then our graduate students are actually working on
- [00:12:12.480]projects, so, you know, undergraduate students that have
- [00:12:14.867]worked for me, we essentially, they come in and the
- [00:12:17.490]projects we're talking about that come through the pool
- [00:12:19.320]fund or through NASCAR or whatever these different groups
- [00:12:21.800]are, that find work with us.
- [00:12:24.120]They basically run those projects with our
- [00:12:26.510]mentorship for lack of a better term so we've had
- [00:12:29.210]students that essentially they're doing everything
- [00:12:31.620]from researching the background of the problem,
- [00:12:34.490]trying to talk with the sponsor and deal with them
- [00:12:37.290]they also update the sponsor on the progress,
- [00:12:39.690]they do the design work, they're out there on test day
- [00:12:42.710]very nervously watching to see if their system works.
- [00:12:45.740]You know and then they actually on the back end have to
- [00:12:47.770]write it up and report it and summarize it for the sponsors.
- [00:12:50.610]So, that, for us that's a big part of being a complete
- [00:12:53.810]engineer is hopefully, especially for the grad students
- [00:12:56.390]they get to see all the phases of an engineering problem
- [00:12:59.190]not just doing some research and giving it to a professor
- [00:13:02.930]ours is a little broader than that in the sense that
- [00:13:06.290]we work more like a specific engineer
- [00:13:09.690]for our research is more applied so,
- [00:13:12.680]a lot of things we do, they do a lot more direct, probably
- [00:13:15.930]interaction with clients then your average graduate student
- [00:13:18.330]at university so I think we give them a pretty good rep
- [00:13:20.700]and our students work all over the country.
- [00:13:22.493]I was just gonna ask that, where have some of your
- [00:13:24.960]students gone on to?
- [00:13:26.383]It's pretty amazing, they'll go all over
- [00:13:27.710]we have, just in the last few years, we've had guys
- [00:13:30.380]that are working at Sandia National Labs, at Caterpillar,
- [00:13:34.070]we've had guys go work for professional golf companies,
- [00:13:37.590]so it's kind of all over the map really
- [00:13:40.310]in engineering consultants.
- [00:13:42.670]Volkswagen, Volvo, John Deere, UP.
- [00:13:46.310]And large civil firms as well, because a lot of
- [00:13:49.220]the civil structural stuff ties very closely
- [00:13:51.260]with what we do, so yeah it's a pretty broad range
- [00:13:54.292]where those guys get to go and so it's,
- [00:13:56.910]we think it's a good opportunity form for sure.
- [00:13:59.890]Now you've mentioned solving problems is one of the
- [00:14:03.370]reason's you're in this, and the world keeps changing
- [00:14:05.940]all the time and technologies in every industry change
- [00:14:09.840]so it creates new problems and new opportunities.
- [00:14:12.330]What sorts of problems would you both like to see
- [00:14:16.250]solved or be a part of solving?
- [00:14:18.690]Sure, so I've got a couple ideas I'm sure Cody has
- [00:14:21.650]plenty too, like I said there's a lot of problems
- [00:14:23.920]always in this field, it constantly evolves.
- [00:14:25.910]One of the things in the general sense that
- [00:14:27.470]we're always trying to do is improve
- [00:14:29.420]the barriers that are on the side's of the roads
- [00:14:31.280]so that's obviously been one of our main focuses for years.
- [00:14:34.310]That problem doesn't go away because as the
- [00:14:36.170]vehicle fleet changes, and the needs of the state DOT's
- [00:14:39.797]and the highway oversight folks, change over time
- [00:14:43.720]so does the needs of the barriers.
- [00:14:45.120]So things that we're looking at over time is,
- [00:14:47.420]how do we design those barriers to better match up
- [00:14:49.500]with the vehicle fleet as it changes over time
- [00:14:51.450]you know right now vehicle's are heavier and have
- [00:14:53.480]higher center of gravities then they ever have.
- [00:14:55.500]We keep adapting our barriers to deal with those
- [00:14:57.970]and then we also have to keep dealing with small cars
- [00:15:00.190]and older vehicles in the fleet.
- [00:15:01.550]So we're trying to do that,
- [00:15:02.970]we're also trying to always make the barriers
- [00:15:04.570]more functional, more cost effective,
- [00:15:07.040]and better applied to whatever their specific needs are
- [00:15:11.070]at the state level, and then make them safer
- [00:15:13.170]on top of that, we always want the safety performance
- [00:15:15.770]to improve too so we're always looking at that
- [00:15:17.920]and then like you mentioned we're looking at
- [00:15:19.360]new technologies as well that go with that.
- [00:15:21.250]So as new materials come out, different ways to
- [00:15:24.270]construct those barriers, we're looking at things like
- [00:15:26.770]advanced precast bridge rails that we can assemble
- [00:15:29.680]more quickly then we can, like cast in place construction
- [00:15:32.930]that's typically been used.
- [00:15:34.390]We think there's new materials for guard rails
- [00:15:36.210]and other types of barriers that we can apply.
- [00:15:38.310]We're also looking at the future of barrier design
- [00:15:40.950]as vehicles and infrastructures start to communicate more
- [00:15:44.930]with network technologies.
- [00:15:47.840]There's vehicle structure communications that we can use
- [00:15:51.320]to potentially do things like smart barriers.
- [00:15:53.260]So instead of the first line off defense
- [00:15:55.480]when you run off the road being a physical barrier
- [00:15:57.400]there may be a smart barrier that actually communicates
- [00:16:00.860]with your vehicle, detects an impact and actually
- [00:16:03.650]tries to stear your vehicle away or change how the vehicle
- [00:16:07.730]responses before you actually hit something
- [00:16:10.130]off the side of the road.
- [00:16:11.720]And that's kind of the next generation of safety devices
- [00:16:14.440]and that's not two or three years away that's long-term
- [00:16:17.270]looking down the road, but those are the kind of things
- [00:16:19.230]that we're looking at in the future because we all see
- [00:16:22.420]that the cars are becoming more connected and they're
- [00:16:25.180]interacting with each other and they're detecting
- [00:16:27.360]collisions with each other.
- [00:16:28.560]Can we do the same kind of things with our infrastructure
- [00:16:30.970]and our safety barriers?
- [00:16:31.860]I think we can and that's probably a pretty big step
- [00:16:34.650]towards the future.
- [00:16:35.540]One of the things about he complete engineer initiative
- [00:16:38.110]that the university is stressing with the students is
- [00:16:41.420]life outside of being an engineer, you gotta have
- [00:16:44.640]a work life balance, so when you guys are not at the
- [00:16:48.503]Midwest Roadside Safety Facility, how do you unwind?
- [00:16:51.270]What kind of hobbies do you guys have?
- [00:16:54.050]Yeah for me, I have two children,
- [00:16:57.310]one's thirteen and one's nine so that's a pretty
- [00:16:59.500]busy hobby, most of the students that are listening
- [00:17:01.930]won't have children but you'll find out.
- [00:17:04.860]It's a real thing, so they keep me very busy,
- [00:17:08.150]between all their activities and things that we do with them
- [00:17:11.270]and then when you work, one thing about engineering is
- [00:17:14.190]it's somewhat of a desk job, so I like to get out
- [00:17:16.660]and run and bike whenever I get a chance to do that
- [00:17:18.760]kind of thing to keep safer from getting too old too fast.
- [00:17:23.570]And I know several of us do a lot of community service,
- [00:17:26.010]I'm active with my church and with different children's
