- [00:00:00.000]Yeah, so I have the iTrace.
- [00:00:02.660]I direct the Software Engineering Research
- [00:00:05.150]and Empirical Studies lab here in the department,
- [00:00:07.830]and we try to understand how software developers work,
- [00:00:11.200]and try to eventually develop tools
- [00:00:13.310]so that they can improve their processes.
- [00:00:16.800]We have this infrastructure that we created in our lab.
- [00:00:19.540]It's called iTrace.
- [00:00:20.800]It's an eye tracking infrastructure
- [00:00:22.360]that connects with an eye tracker,
- [00:00:23.690]and lets developers track the eye movements
- [00:00:26.050]while they're developing software.
- [00:00:28.860]And this is unique because it automatically maps
- [00:00:32.230]what you're looking at while you're working,
- [00:00:34.270]even in the presence of scrolling, contact switching.
- [00:00:37.020]You can open any number of files
- [00:00:39.030]and it takes care of that behind the scenes.
- [00:00:41.800]So right now what you're seeing
- [00:00:43.040]is my live eyes tracking movements.
- [00:00:45.980]Being able to work on this research
- [00:00:47.950]that's advanced in its field, it feels really rewarding
- [00:00:50.470]because I put in all this hard work,
- [00:00:52.170]and I'm getting this, just great reward
- [00:00:53.980]of knowing that I'm giving back to the community a bit.
- [00:00:56.830]I involve students in all aspects of the research.
- [00:01:00.710]Now I can actually get involved
- [00:01:02.100]with eye tracking technology to help understand
- [00:01:05.180]how we as software developers learn,
- [00:01:06.930]and to hopefully improve
- [00:01:07.900]that for a lot of software developers in the future.
- [00:01:10.520]Here, and here.
- [00:01:12.240]Rather than just looking at algorithms,
- [00:01:13.590]I was able to kind of really map it down
- [00:01:15.590]to okay, what are developers doing?
- [00:01:18.760]And how can we best use our algorithms
- [00:01:22.030]to help developers where they are?
- [00:01:24.840]I absolutely love what I do
- [00:01:26.780]It's as close we can get to the human mind,
- [00:01:28.910]based on your gaze patterns.
- [00:01:30.860]So that's pretty interesting to me.
- [00:01:32.722](upbeat music)
