- [00:00:01.610]Welcome back, Sports Nightly here on
- [00:00:02.810]the Huskers Sports Network.
- [00:00:04.010]I'm glad to be joined by
- [00:00:05.050]University of Nebraska-Lincoln Chancellor, Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:07.840]We always talk about spectacular feats by Husker athletes,
- [00:00:12.220]and there's so many of them that do so well
- [00:00:14.030]as part of even a team sport.
- [00:00:15.550]But that, teams are made up of individuals
- [00:00:17.710]who do some really interesting things,
- [00:00:19.660]and I know you want to highlight a couple here
- [00:00:21.701]of recent weeks, more of individual sports.
- [00:00:23.637]But, some young Nebraska athletes that we're proud of.
- [00:00:26.870]Yeah you know Greg, we're really proud
- [00:00:29.130]of our former athletes.
- [00:00:30.410]And when athletes go on to coaching careers, you know,
- [00:00:33.370]we've got one of those to celebrate right now,
- [00:00:35.471]where are new women's gymnastics Head Coach Heather Brink,
- [00:00:39.320]has been serving in an interim role here,
- [00:00:42.440]and she was just named early this month
- [00:00:44.810]as the permanent coach of the women's team.
- [00:00:46.901]She's a former Husker.
- [00:00:48.411]You know, competed here, had great achievements
- [00:00:51.510]in winning two National Titles
- [00:00:53.840]in the 2000 NCAA Championships.
- [00:00:57.260]So, we're really great and proud
- [00:00:59.010]to have Heather leading the team.
- [00:01:00.750]And then one of our distance runners, George Kusche,
- [00:01:03.769]just recently became the first
- [00:01:06.352]Nebraska track and field athlete to break
- [00:01:08.810]four minutes in the mile, you know,
- [00:01:11.190]on a standard size track.
- [00:01:12.460]So, he has his own story of perseverance.
- [00:01:15.950]A couple of years ago, he wasn't meeting his own goals
- [00:01:18.320]in his running program,
- [00:01:19.610]and decided to seek improvement by coming here to Nebraska.
- [00:01:23.050]And was drawn here not only by
- [00:01:24.621]the opportunity in track and field,
- [00:01:26.651]but he also was drawn here by
- [00:01:28.990]the great Actuarial Science program
- [00:01:30.750]we have at the College of Business.
- [00:01:32.290]So, off to a great start in this track and field season,
- [00:01:35.430]and in women's gymnastics with Heather.
- [00:01:37.280]Very good.
- [00:01:38.113]Well, thank you for highlighting those.
- [00:01:38.946]I know it's been a big month already.
- [00:01:40.370]This is a huge week,
- [00:01:41.440]because we're celebrating the 150th anniversary
- [00:01:44.440]of this incredible institution.
- [00:01:46.340]You've had a lot of activities that have been going on.
- [00:01:48.240]The 15th is actually the Charter Day.
- [00:01:50.741]Kind of outline what's been going on
- [00:01:53.000]this week here on campus.
- [00:01:53.980]Well, this is our big week.
- [00:01:55.272]All right, so we've been talking a little bit about it
- [00:01:57.392]leading up to the year,
- [00:01:58.792]and this is the highlight of the year.
- [00:02:01.130]It's actually our Charter Week,
- [00:02:02.930]when we celebrate our official
- [00:02:04.699]150th anniversary signing of that charter.
- [00:02:07.720]So, we're off to a big start, kind of here in midweek.
- [00:02:10.752]On Monday, we had a really great event
- [00:02:13.541]bringing together 600 of our students across the campus
- [00:02:17.260]in a conversation with Senator Ben Sasse,
- [00:02:19.512]talking about how to dialogue together,
- [00:02:22.360]and get along together in the world today.
- [00:02:24.920]And, a really rich discussion with three of our students
- [00:02:28.290]and some of our faculty.
- [00:02:29.678]Then yesterday afternoon,
- [00:02:31.358]we had the second one of our N150 lecture series
- [00:02:35.101]that we're carrying out throughout the year,
- [00:02:37.310]12 of them throughout the months of the year
- [00:02:40.500]highlighting the history of the university.
- [00:02:42.240]And this one was really, really cool,
- [00:02:44.100]because it took the old, original university hall
- [00:02:46.860]which was the original building of the campus,
- [00:02:49.130]no longer with us, and recreated it by virtual reality.
- [00:02:53.720]So, people had headsets and were able
- [00:02:55.430]to walk around in the building,
- [00:02:56.901]in virtual reality done with NET,
- [00:02:59.280]that Kay Logan-Peters from
- [00:03:01.061]our university library's put together.
- [00:03:03.780]So, exciting lecture yesterday.
- [00:03:05.480]Tonight at our men's basketball game with Minnesota,
- [00:03:09.380]we've got a little birthday cake celebration planned
- [00:03:11.870]for halftime of the basketball game.
- [00:03:14.280]And, we'll just wait to see who jumps out of that cake.
- [00:03:16.707]Right?
- [00:03:17.560]So, exciting there.
- [00:03:19.069]Tomorrow night, we've got the opening
- [00:03:21.860]of the fourth floor of Morrill Hall of the museum
- [00:03:24.389]that is now a world-class museum space,
- [00:03:27.131]multi-million dollar project that people
- [00:03:30.220]are going to get to see for the first time.
- [00:03:31.880]Very excited about that.
- [00:03:33.269]Then Friday, is our big Charter Day.
- [00:03:35.890]So, we'll celebrate it during the day
- [00:03:37.581]with open houses at the university.
- [00:03:40.300]And then that night,
- [00:03:41.248]big, huge musical celebration at the Lied Center.
- [00:03:44.700]We think we're going to be full for that,
- [00:03:47.090]with fireworks over the campus.
- [00:03:48.560]It's just a really cool week for us
- [00:03:50.962]to be able to celebrate this 150 year anniversary
- [00:03:54.210]of this great university.
- [00:03:55.341]Well, that's a wonderful milestone
- [00:03:56.470]for everybody on campus,
- [00:03:57.560]and congratulations to all the people
- [00:03:58.870]who put a lot of effort
- [00:03:59.703]into getting all these events planned, and then executed.
- [00:04:03.420]Let's look down the road a little bit.
- [00:04:04.890]Let's go to April,
- [00:04:05.727]and the university's going to hosting
- [00:04:07.240]another interesting event for Nebraska entrepreneurs.
- [00:04:10.880]Maybe even a chance to go on national TV.
- [00:04:12.830]What can you tell us about that?
- [00:04:14.260]Well you know, kind of a unique deal coming here.
- [00:04:16.752]People have heard of the Shark Tank, right?
- [00:04:18.803]So the show, it's where the sharks, you know,
- [00:04:21.740]the successful business people, and potential investors,
- [00:04:24.712]and ideas, and new startups.
- [00:04:26.712]You'll get to hear pitches.
- [00:04:28.472]And people come to them and say,
- [00:04:30.930]if you invest in this, we'll make a big deal happen, right?
- [00:04:35.533]So, people are familiar with that.
- [00:04:37.163]They go through trial runs around the country,
- [00:04:40.710]casting calls if you want to think of it that way.
- [00:04:43.930]And, we've got a really unique opportunity
- [00:04:46.090]coming up here in Early April, brought onboard
- [00:04:50.210]by the Engler Agribusiness Entrepreneurship Program
- [00:04:52.712]at the university.
- [00:04:54.710]This is a program that was started about 10 years ago now,
- [00:04:58.610]almost 10 years ago by a 20 million dollar gift
- [00:05:01.410]from Paul Engler, accomplished alum of the university.
- [00:05:05.190]The largest cattle feeder in the world,
- [00:05:06.500]who wanted to really encourage students
- [00:05:10.980]in their entrepreneurial abilities.
- [00:05:13.170]So, the Engler Program is a sponsor of this,
- [00:05:15.072]that Shark Tank is going to be coming here
- [00:05:17.380]April the 5th and 6th at PBA to do a casting call.
- [00:05:22.400]So, kind of a really cool thing happening here in Lincoln,
- [00:05:25.400]and who knows, some of our students
- [00:05:27.410]may very well end up on the Shark Tank
- [00:05:29.240]that we'll see coming out of that casting call.
- [00:05:31.843]Well, that's awesome.
- [00:05:32.730]Fantastic, I look forward to that event coming up in April.
- [00:05:34.860]Well, congratulations again on
- [00:05:36.490]the 150th anniversary celebrations.
- [00:05:38.581]I hope you enjoy the entire week, you should.
- [00:05:40.661]It's great to see this happening,
- [00:05:43.061]that we're celebrating throughout the year,
- [00:05:44.941]in addition to this week.
- [00:05:46.510]But this week has been, you know,
- [00:05:48.160]is just fun to be in the middle of this.
- [00:05:50.020]And, to think about the great things
- [00:05:52.080]that have happened at this university now for 15 decades,
- [00:05:54.853]and to think about the future too.
- [00:05:57.170]And the bold future that we have ahead
- [00:05:58.763]as the state's university, and leading the state forward.
- [00:06:02.592]Nebraska, University of Nebraska-Lincoln Chancellor
