- [00:00:12.890]When we think about what diversity means
- [00:00:14.970]and why it's important for an institution
- [00:00:17.020]like the University of Nebraska,
- [00:00:19.200]for me it really comes down to this.
- [00:00:21.430]We're stronger when we live and work and study
- [00:00:23.750]alongside people who don't look like us,
- [00:00:25.900]don't think like us,
- [00:00:27.540]and don't come from the same place as us.
- [00:00:29.840]There are 52,000 students and 16,000 faculty and staff
- [00:00:34.130]at the University of Nebraska,
- [00:00:36.110]each of us has a different story
- [00:00:38.230]and we can each learn something from each other.
- [00:00:42.670]Being a giant in higher education depends on great minds,
- [00:00:46.400]minds that represent a wide array
- [00:00:48.750]of perspectives and backgrounds.
- [00:00:50.760]In the absence of diversity and inclusion,
- [00:00:53.360]opportunities for excellence and innovation are diminished.
- [00:00:56.850]Looking at a problem or challenge
- [00:00:58.630]from many different points of view
- [00:01:00.120]furthers our ability to learn from each other,
- [00:01:02.970]to arrive at new and better research solutions
- [00:01:06.010]and to transform lives through these solutions.
- [00:01:09.100]We're simply a greater university for it.
- [00:01:11.532](instrumental music)
- [00:01:14.440]There are real measurable impacts
- [00:01:16.310]when an organization commits to being inclusive.
- [00:01:19.360]Team performance improves dramatically
- [00:01:21.410]when everyone in the team feels included.
- [00:01:24.400]In fact, researchers found, that the most inclusive teams
- [00:01:27.740]perform up to 60% better.
- [00:01:30.160]That's critical to keep in mind
- [00:01:32.300]when it comes to increasing our effectiveness
- [00:01:34.600]and productivity as an university.
- [00:01:37.370]The impact on people, whether students or talent,
- [00:01:40.390]is another example.
- [00:01:42.180]An inclusive university recruits and retains students,
- [00:01:45.160]faculty and staff from a variety of backgrounds.
- [00:01:48.790]Diversity inclusion really does keep
- [00:01:50.810]the University of Nebraska competitive.
- [00:01:53.270]To remain attractive to potential students,
- [00:01:55.460]faculty and staff, we have to make sure
- [00:01:57.690]everyone on our campus community feels included
- [00:02:00.970]and has the support they need to succeed.
- [00:02:04.300]Diversity is not only the right thing to do,
- [00:02:06.710]it's the smart thing to do.
- [00:02:08.590](instrumental music)
- [00:02:11.240]A culture of Inclusive Excellence ignites ideas
- [00:02:14.590]by bringing together people with different backgrounds,
- [00:02:17.450]mindsets and ways of thinking.
- [00:02:19.900]When we engage respectfully across our differences,
- [00:02:23.550]it can lead to productive discourse
- [00:02:25.860]and great learning opportunities.
- [00:02:28.190]At the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:02:30.520]we encourage our university community
- [00:02:32.750]to reflect on our beliefs on diversity and inclusion.
- [00:02:36.870]True excellence requires
- [00:02:38.610]that everyone be able to work and to learn
- [00:02:41.540]in an atmosphere of respect, dignity and acceptance.
- [00:02:45.880]These core values are essential to UNL's comprehensive
- [00:02:49.170]state-wide lingering mission
- [00:02:51.300]of education, research and creative activity,
- [00:02:54.600]an engagement with Nebraska and the greater world.
- [00:02:57.910]We are dedicated to being an inclusive university
- [00:03:00.480]that encourages discourse, debate,
- [00:03:02.470]and the free exchange of ideas,
- [00:03:04.550]which is ever more important
- [00:03:06.590]in an increasingly polarized world.
- [00:03:09.243](instrumental music)
- [00:03:12.470]In a culture of inclusion,
- [00:03:13.970]all ideas can be freely and respectfully shared.
- [00:03:18.630]We can argue, discuss, reflect, change our minds,
- [00:03:22.310]or agree to disagree, this is the kind of culture
- [00:03:26.700]we are committed to here at UNO and at the Med Center.
- [00:03:30.030]Both in and out of the classroom,
- [00:03:32.070]at campuses across our state,
- [00:03:34.280]we need to be challenged by and exposed to ideas,
- [00:03:37.820]beliefs and experiences that are unfamiliar to
- [00:03:42.010]or that conflict with our own.
- [00:03:44.080]At the same time, we must nurture a constructive environment
- [00:03:47.910]in which all of us feel safe to share our point of view.
- [00:03:52.100]This will result in students
- [00:03:53.360]who are better prepared for their professions,
- [00:03:55.890]where they will likely be exposed
- [00:03:57.480]to many different points of view,
- [00:03:59.240]in students who have a heightened capacity
- [00:04:01.490]to think critically, and in students who can operate
- [00:04:04.480]in many different cultural settings.
- [00:04:06.845](instrumental music)
- [00:04:11.380]Any great university has to be a place
- [00:04:13.680]where different ideas collide.
- [00:04:15.570]Sometimes that's uncomfortable
- [00:04:17.600]but that's what Inclusive Excellence is all about,
- [00:04:20.270]an open and free exchange of ideas
- [00:04:22.850]where everyone feels like they can contribute
- [00:04:25.340]and that they will be heard.
- [00:04:26.610]That's the kind of learning environment
- [00:04:28.160]I want for my own children
- [00:04:29.860]and that's the culture we're working every day to create
- [00:04:33.220]across the University of Nebraska.
- [00:04:35.130]The consequences of not embracing diversity and inclusion
- [00:04:38.190]are significant.
- [00:04:39.730]Nebraska desperately needs more teachers,
- [00:04:42.030]more IT professionals, nurses and entrepreneurs
- [00:04:44.500]in the work force.
- [00:04:45.420]If we're not proactive about expanding access
- [00:04:48.080]to education to every young person,
- [00:04:50.840]our work force will suffer.
- [00:04:53.150]And once they arrive on campus,
- [00:04:54.530]we have a responsibility to prepare them
- [00:04:57.230]to live and work in a world
- [00:04:58.700]that's as interconnected as it's ever been.
- [00:05:01.010]That's why the University of Nebraska
- [00:05:02.860]is proud to welcome a diverse community of scholars,
- [00:05:05.550]faculty, staff and students of different ethnicities,
- [00:05:08.370]faiths, backgrounds and disciplines.
- [00:05:10.950]But we're all brought together by a common goal
- [00:05:13.430]of using the power of education to change the world.
- [00:05:16.768](instrumental music)
