[00:00:00.360]One of the things I hope that we can find from this study,
[00:00:04.340]is just the unique experience
[00:00:07.090]of the population we're working with here,
[00:00:09.820]which is ethnic minorities in rural communities.
[00:00:12.220]There's really a gap in information about this population,
[00:00:15.580]and more and more we're recognizing the need
[00:00:17.960]to address their needs,
[00:00:20.740]because there're growing numbers in schools and communities,
[00:00:23.480]but to address those needs, we need
[00:00:25.590]to know even what their experience is like.
[00:00:27.720]The uniqueness of it is that most
[00:00:29.420]of the studies related to minority populations,
[00:00:33.150]in particular the one we're doing which is with Hispanics,
[00:00:37.110]is that the previous studies that have been done
[00:00:41.730]were mainly in very large cities on the East
[00:00:44.100]and West Coasts.
[00:00:45.240]We know in Nebraska for example,
[00:00:47.010]that 60 out of the 90 counties are losing populations.
[00:00:51.100]And the ones that are not losing populations,
[00:00:54.080]are also the ones with large numbers of ethnic minorities.
[00:00:57.260]When we look at communities
[00:00:58.920]and what makes a community a good place,
[00:01:02.190]we should always keep in mind
[00:01:03.440]that the message should be not on the top,
[00:01:09.610]or who is doing well, but more on the bottom.
[00:01:13.120]In that manner, we enhance the community as a whole
[00:01:15.590]and not just a certain subgroups of it.
[00:01:18.190]I think there are two ways that the findings
[00:01:20.490]of this project can contribute to the well-being
[00:01:22.960]of ethnic minorities in Nebraska and outside.
[00:01:27.130]One is that we're hoping to contribute
[00:01:28.900]to the literature and the theory,
[00:01:30.350]which right now is quite limited when it comes
[00:01:32.230]to addressing quality of life issues affecting minorities,
[00:01:35.820]especially in rural populations.
[00:01:38.010]We are also hoping to return the data
[00:01:40.310]to these communities, so giving fact sheets or briefs,
[00:01:44.930]or any other information we can return
[00:01:46.920]to the communities and the agencies,
[00:01:48.450]in those communities that they can use.
