- [00:00:00.770]Hello SPED873 students welcome to your course orientation.
- [00:00:05.040]I am Leann Thomas your instructor and by the end
- [00:00:08.830]of this presentation I hope that you have a good
- [00:00:12.240]understanding of the format of this course
- [00:00:15.030]as well as the expectations.
- [00:00:17.330]I'm going to begin by sharing my screen and
- [00:00:20.061]opening up the course on Canvas.
- [00:00:24.780]The course of course is 873 content methods
- [00:00:27.820]for students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
- [00:00:30.050]When you enter the course on Canvas you will
- [00:00:32.520]be directed to the home page which you see here.
- [00:00:36.040]On the home page, the format is you will always
- [00:00:38.958]at the top will be the most recent announcements.
- [00:00:42.300]I don't have any at this point but will have
- [00:00:45.890]some shortly followed by the syllabus and the
- [00:00:49.870]course outline.
- [00:00:51.590]I'm gonna begin by just doing a quick walk through
- [00:00:54.140]of the major components of the syllabus but
- [00:00:57.410]I would like to emphasize it is your responsibility
- [00:00:59.800]to read the syllabus in its entirety and do so
- [00:01:04.730]carefully because there's a lot of important information.
- [00:01:07.860]The first thing I'd like to direct your attention
- [00:01:10.240]to is this note that is highlighted here
- [00:01:13.300]at the top of the syllabus just under the title.
- [00:01:17.384]It is stating as of 12/21 all changes to the
- [00:01:20.330]syllabus will be highlighted.
- [00:01:23.100]I'm asking you to refer to this live syllabus
- [00:01:26.280]for the most up to date information because
- [00:01:28.570]occasionally I will have to update or modify things.
- [00:01:31.699]If you print out the syllabus there's no
- [00:01:34.590]guarantee that the information on the print out
- [00:01:37.238]matches the most current information so I ask you
- [00:01:40.370]to always refer to this live syllabus.
- [00:01:43.144]So, review the course description, course objectives.
- [00:01:46.942]I did send an email out prior to the break
- [00:01:50.520]regarding the course textbooks,
- [00:01:53.340]you have two in this course.
- [00:01:55.360]I was going to show you them.
- [00:01:57.170]The first one is, "I See What You Mean" by Steve
- [00:02:00.670]Moline on visual literacy.
- [00:02:05.968]The second one I have with me, it's not at my
- [00:02:08.835]desk is "Deaf Learners: Developments and Curriculum
- [00:02:12.210]and Instruction" by Mores and Martin.
- [00:02:16.100]These are the two textbooks required for the course.
- [00:02:18.595]If you have not ordered them I highly recommend
- [00:02:22.630]you get on that as soon as possible because we are
- [00:02:24.780]diving in readings as soon as week one.
- [00:02:28.760]Page two of the syllabus describes my role
- [00:02:32.450]in the course, your role in the course, as well
- [00:02:35.030]as technology requirements.
- [00:02:36.890]Many of you are familiar with these, I just would
- [00:02:39.330]like to again point out the requirement for live
- [00:02:42.010]text is for anybody enrolled in the grad cert
- [00:02:44.640]or Master's program.
- [00:02:46.600]There are certain assignments that are live text
- [00:02:50.070]assignments which will be highlighted on the
- [00:02:53.750]course outline as well as within the course content.
- [00:02:58.850]Page three of the syllabus addresses the Canvas
- [00:03:01.480]course structure which essentially mirrors what you will
- [00:03:04.230]see on your Canvas page, navigation page.
- [00:03:09.127]You are currently looking at my navigation page
- [00:03:10.960]which is slightly different as an instructor
- [00:03:13.080]from yours, but for the most part, the tabs will
- [00:03:15.715]be the same, comprised of the ones listed here.
- [00:03:19.500]And a description of each is provided.
- [00:03:22.102]In terms of required coursework, every week you will
- [00:03:28.995]have a course page, I will show you week one course
- [00:03:32.219]page, we will be releasing that today, which is Friday.
- [00:03:35.566]All the content with the exception of your textbooks
- [00:03:39.980]readings will be provided in the weekly
- [00:03:44.212]course page, including links to your discussion boards,
- [00:03:46.010]links to any assignments that you are required to
- [00:03:48.670]do and quizzes.
- [00:03:50.866]In terms of discussions, I decided for this course
- [00:03:56.406]not to have a set amount of discussions.
- [00:03:59.365]There will either be one or two required discussions
- [00:04:02.055]each week.
- [00:04:04.468]So, the number of discussions will determine how
- [00:04:08.710]many times you are required to post.
- [00:04:10.918]What I will point out is that you must submit
- [00:04:15.610]an initial post each week by either responding
- [00:04:20.240]to the main thread or prompt or another student
- [00:04:24.080]or instructor's comments.
- [00:04:26.190]Then, in addition to that initial post for the
- [00:04:29.440]discussion, you must also submit at least one
- [00:04:32.423]follow up point to another student or instructor's
- [00:04:35.961]question.
- [00:04:38.800]So, to clarify, if we have one discussion which we
- [00:04:42.270]will have in week one, you are really only required
- [00:04:45.280]to submit two times, one initial post and one follow
- [00:04:49.218]up post.
- [00:04:51.060]If we have two discussions, which we may have in the
- [00:04:54.480]future, you would be required to submit an initial
- [00:04:57.840]post in both of those discussions and then at least
- [00:05:01.000]one follow up post in either one of the discussions.
- [00:05:05.080]You are certainly encouraged to and invited to
- [00:05:08.600]post more than that, but at a minimum, that is how
- [00:05:13.165]discussion requirements are met.
- [00:05:16.353]I'd like to point out that I am trying
- [00:05:20.170]a slightly different format in terms of the
- [00:05:22.684]schedule for the course, and schedule for discussions.
- [00:05:27.188]For this course, discussions as well as the weekly
- [00:05:31.370]pages are going to run Friday to Thursday.
- [00:05:35.840]This is different from what you've experienced
- [00:05:39.010]in the past, you're gonna have to get your
- [00:05:40.020]mind wrapped around it.
- [00:05:41.670]Think of this as a Friday course.
- [00:05:45.060]So the course is essentially new content, is said
- [00:05:51.200]to begin and covered on Friday and we will run to
- [00:05:54.870]the following Thursday.
- [00:05:57.312]You're gonna have to get accustomed to that.
- [00:06:01.260]This is the sequence we will follow throughout
- [00:06:03.320]the semester with the exception of week one.
- [00:06:06.150]This first week in order to get on this sequence
- [00:06:09.300]and not give up a week, week one will be short and
- [00:06:13.720]will run Monday, because the semester begins on
- [00:06:16.140]Monday January 7 and run til Thursday.
- [00:06:20.350]The first week is short, has just a minimal content
- [00:06:23.476]and then we will start week two on that Friday
- [00:06:27.912]and run a full week until Thursday.
- [00:06:32.178]I will provide more input and guidance on that
- [00:06:35.230]through announcements and so forth to remind
- [00:06:38.100]you of that.
- [00:06:39.240]You see the rubric for discussion posts.
- [00:06:42.799]In addition to discussion posts we are going
- [00:06:47.060]to have weekly quizzes.
- [00:06:49.430]The primary purpose of which is to assess your
- [00:06:51.890]understandings of the reading and content.
- [00:06:54.785]They are gonna be worth six points and again these
- [00:06:59.311]quizzes will be open on the Sunday of each week and
- [00:07:03.855]close that following Thursday.
- [00:07:08.085]There are a total of eight assignments for
- [00:07:12.670]this course, each is noted below.
- [00:07:15.800]Be sure to take a look at those.
- [00:07:18.480]The major assignments of this course
- [00:07:20.750]are the lesson modifications.
- [00:07:23.700]I will be providing much more detail about those
- [00:07:27.154]in week two.
- [00:07:29.530]I just decided to give you an overview of what
- [00:07:33.050]they are in the syllabus and then we'll provide more
- [00:07:37.190]detail in week two.
- [00:07:39.640]Please note that the lesson modification does
- [00:07:41.980]have a peer review component on the final one
- [00:07:45.630]where you will be expected to review a peer's
- [00:07:47.780]lesson modification, provide feedback on it and
- [00:07:49.902]then you will then submit a revised one
- [00:07:55.710]for your final grade.
- [00:07:57.040]You are also going to be required to,
- [00:07:59.440]towards the end of the course, provide a teaching
- [00:08:02.140]philosophy statement which also has a peer
- [00:08:05.470]review component.
- [00:08:07.415]More information regarding these assignments
- [00:08:09.504]will be provided in the weeks to come.
- [00:08:12.140]There's also a five point pre and post test.
- [00:08:15.920]The pre test, there's a link for it in the week one
- [00:08:19.450]page which I will show you.
- [00:08:21.450]You will be given the same one at the end
- [00:08:23.510]of the semester.
- [00:08:24.343]These are not formally graded meaning your wrong
- [00:08:27.310]answers will not count against you it's just a way
- [00:08:29.930]to assess your growth of knowledge on some of the
- [00:08:32.980]content and discourse over time.
- [00:08:36.070]The remainder of the syllabus covers grading
- [00:08:38.410]and so forth so be sure to read through all of that.
- [00:08:42.634]Below the syllabus is the course outline
- [00:08:46.020]which outlines every week by topic, reading materials
- [00:08:50.790]and assignments.
- [00:08:52.820]Again, please note that week one is a short week.
- [00:08:56.850]It is going to run Monday through Thursday
- [00:08:59.860]to get us started.
- [00:09:01.870]And then following week one we are going to get
- [00:09:04.710]on a schedule of content being available Friday
- [00:09:09.360]through Thursdays so a full week starting in
- [00:09:16.210]week two and that's how our schedule is going to run.
- [00:09:19.960]So be sure to refer to the course outline.
- [00:09:22.220]The course summary on the home page also
- [00:09:25.520]is very useful because it lists the due dates
- [00:09:27.621]for all the content within the week.
- [00:09:30.624]With the exception of week one you should see
- [00:09:33.310]the same pattern across the semester.
- [00:09:37.017]Just pay attention to that.
- [00:09:40.720]As many of you know, the majority of your content
- [00:09:45.220]is going to be found within the modules tab.
- [00:09:48.740]At this point I am only going to show you
- [00:09:53.720]week one, at the top you do have some general
- [00:09:56.770]information available to you.
- [00:09:59.710]There is our link which I always have to course
- [00:10:02.090]related questions if you have questions regarding
- [00:10:05.742]content or information in the course I ask you
- [00:10:06.830]to post them there and I will respond to them there.
- [00:10:10.522]If it's very pressing I ask you to email me.
- [00:10:13.640]If you have any questions on how to navigate
- [00:10:15.960]Canvas, I recommend visiting the Canvas student guides.
- [00:10:19.515]So I'm going down to week one on introduction to
- [00:10:24.418]visualization and visual literacy.
- [00:10:27.899]Every week we'll be set up similar, we will provide
- [00:10:30.874]an overview about what will be covered this week.
- [00:10:35.750]With it being week one, I do have some kind of
- [00:10:39.300]precursors or preliminary activities I want you to
- [00:10:42.030]do before diving into the content.
- [00:10:44.440]One is to introduce yourself to the class.
- [00:10:47.270]I have provided a video introduction of myself
- [00:10:50.929]in that discussion for you to watch and you are welcome
- [00:10:56.800]to then post your own with pictures because it's always
- [00:11:00.250]helpful to attach a face to a name.
- [00:11:02.400]I also ask that you review the course syllabus
- [00:11:04.830]and outline in detail.
- [00:11:06.400]I will be posting, you are watching this course
- [00:11:10.030]orientation and then also a link to the course
- [00:11:15.980]related questions.
- [00:11:18.940]I do ask you before diving into any of the content
- [00:11:21.730]to take the pretest.
- [00:11:23.690]I'm strongly asking you not to refer to the internet
- [00:11:26.792]or books, I want your knowledge just as it is
- [00:11:30.900]in answering those questions.
- [00:11:32.280]I've set a time limit of 15 minutes on that pretest
- [00:11:35.500]with the goal of you just going through it
- [00:11:37.200]and putting down what you know.
- [00:11:39.865]It's OK if you don't know an answer just put "I don't know."
- [00:11:41.900]Once you've completed those tasks you can dive into
- [00:11:45.370]the content.
- [00:11:46.880]I have a very short chapter from Olean, a document on
- [00:11:50.670]visual literacy and two links for you to
- [00:11:52.990]visit this week.
- [00:11:54.350]As I said, we have one discussion this week
- [00:11:56.900]and a quiz.
- [00:11:58.759]For the most part, that is the format of
- [00:12:00.760]every weekly page.
- [00:12:02.880]In addition on your navigation pane to the right
- [00:12:06.500]I've also given you access to a discussions tab
- [00:12:11.200]which is just easy access, quick access to the
- [00:12:14.620]weekly discussions, same with the quizzes, if you
- [00:12:17.680]want to just go directly to the weekly quizzes
- [00:12:20.490]once they are released.
- [00:12:23.000]Then grades as well as people you can chat
- [00:12:27.260]with in the course.
- [00:12:28.640]One thing I would like to point out is that
- [00:12:30.510]if at any point you click on the link and
- [00:12:32.810]it is not directing you where it should or does not
- [00:12:35.240]seem to be working I kindly ask that you just
- [00:12:37.270]shoot me an email because every once in a while
- [00:12:40.072]mistakes happen or something doesn't work properly
- [00:12:45.480]and so the sooner I am informed, the sooner
- [00:12:47.810]I can fix it.
- [00:12:51.043]In addition, that's about it for the
- [00:12:54.610]overview of the course.
- [00:12:56.301]As I said, I will continue to communicate
- [00:12:58.990]through announcements.
- [00:13:00.880]So once I do, you will see the announcements tab
- [00:13:04.010]show up here and any announcements
- [00:13:07.290]you should be receiving via email if you are not
- [00:13:10.088]as the course gets going, then you need to
- [00:13:13.950]check that the email you have in Canvas is the
- [00:13:16.650]same that you look at regularly.
- [00:13:18.950]But I do a lot of communication through announcements.
- [00:13:22.050]Should you have any questions, please post them
- [00:13:25.770]in the course related questions or via email.
- [00:13:28.496]Thank you and I look forward to a great semester
- [00:13:31.320]with you all.
