- [00:00:01.180]Alright, hello everybody.
- [00:00:04.860]This is your course orientation.
- [00:00:07.340]We're gonna walk you through the course
- [00:00:10.720]just to get you oriented Canvas,
- [00:00:13.140]and how we've laid out the course in Canvas.
- [00:00:15.340]So right now I'm gonna share my screen
- [00:00:18.250]so you can see what we see.
- [00:00:22.290]So everybody, this is the homepage
- [00:00:24.840]for the course, Speech and Language Development
- [00:00:28.200]for Students Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, SLPA A84.
- [00:00:33.780]When you enter the course, you will
- [00:00:35.783]automatically be directed to the homepage
- [00:00:38.610]which displays the syllabus and the course outline.
- [00:00:42.820]So, Katie and I are gonna kind of
- [00:00:45.940]walk you through these things as well as
- [00:00:47.800]some of the major navigation features.
- [00:00:51.069]So with the course outline I'm not going to
- [00:00:53.700]go over everything, but I'll touch on some key things.
- [00:00:57.600]The first being, as you see here highlighted in yellow
- [00:01:02.000]is that occasionally we may make some updates
- [00:01:05.880]or changes to the syllabus.
- [00:01:07.940]All of those will be highlighted in yellow
- [00:01:10.230]on this live syllabus which is posted on the homepage.
- [00:01:13.670]So we ask you to refer to this syllabus
- [00:01:17.110]for the most up to date information.
- [00:01:18.960]So if you printed out a syllabus,
- [00:01:20.650]we can't guarantee that that information
- [00:01:22.570]you have printed is always gonna be up to date,
- [00:01:24.610]so we ask you to refer to this one.
- [00:01:29.290]Read through the course rationale, course objectives.
- [00:01:32.840]Like to point out we sent out
- [00:01:34.320]an announcement about the textbook.
- [00:01:37.530]Everybody should have their textbook ordered
- [00:01:39.820]because the first reading we will have
- [00:01:41.810]the beginning of the semester, this Monday.
- [00:01:45.050]So be sure if you haven't ordered
- [00:01:46.770]your textbooks to get them ordered.
- [00:01:50.590]Read about instructor roles and student roles.
- [00:01:55.030]Under technology requirements,
- [00:01:57.170]everything's pretty straight-forward.
- [00:01:59.370]One thing I would like to point out
- [00:02:01.010]is the requirement for live text.
- [00:02:03.300]This is only a requirement for the students
- [00:02:06.249]enrolled in either a graduate certificate
- [00:02:09.060]or masters program in special education.
- [00:02:12.300]So for this course, this really only applies
- [00:02:15.110]to the Deaf Education majors who are
- [00:02:18.130]enrolled in either the grad cert
- [00:02:20.410]or the masters degree program.
- [00:02:22.080]It doesn't apply to you SLP students.
- [00:02:26.690]Read through the rest of those technology requirements.
- [00:02:31.680]In terms of the course structure,
- [00:02:33.947]everything you see laid out here for Canvas
- [00:02:37.240]you'll see on your home navigation page.
- [00:02:40.810]I'll point out that your navigation page
- [00:02:44.070]will look a little different than ours
- [00:02:45.880]because we are instructors.
- [00:02:47.500]You have a student view slightly different.
- [00:02:50.620]But for the most part it'll look the same.
- [00:02:54.000]In terms of required course work,
- [00:02:56.480]this is where I'm gonna spend a little more time.
- [00:03:00.031]So, every week all the course work will be
- [00:03:04.290]collated within a weekly course page,
- [00:03:06.910]which we will publish a couple days earlier
- [00:03:11.813]than the week they start.
- [00:03:14.270]And so you'll be able to access all your content
- [00:03:17.090]with the exception of your text book
- [00:03:19.650]readings from the weekly course pages.
- [00:03:23.600]A major component of the course are our weekly discussions.
- [00:03:28.860]This is where a lot of the learning takes place,
- [00:03:31.090]and so each week we will have one required discussion
- [00:03:35.360]related to the course readings and course content.
- [00:03:38.780]The discussion itself may have a couple different
- [00:03:41.150]threads that touch on a few topics.
- [00:03:44.500]The big thing to remember is that you are required
- [00:03:48.010]to post a minimum of two times in every discussion.
- [00:03:52.197]One, must be in the form of what we call an initial post,
- [00:03:57.440]where you either address the initial prompt or question,
- [00:04:01.950]or one of the other student's response to that question.
- [00:04:10.170]And then we also require what we're calling
- [00:04:12.210]a follow up post which has to be
- [00:04:14.720]in the form of a reply or a response
- [00:04:17.250]to one of your classmates.
- [00:04:18.610]So just keep in mind a minimum of two.
- [00:04:21.060]We do encourage you to participate
- [00:04:24.010]and post more than two times in the discussion,
- [00:04:28.220]but we are asking you to keep it
- [00:04:31.940]to a maximum of five total posts,
- [00:04:35.870]just to not overwhelm your classmates.
- [00:04:38.660]No extra credit for extra posts.
- [00:04:40.770]Right, right.
- [00:04:41.603]But that doesn't mean
- [00:04:42.436]you can't participate to clarify
- [00:04:45.520]or to add some of your own thoughts or findings.
- [00:04:50.730]We just want to make sure everybody's able to
- [00:04:53.780]is participating throughout the week,
- [00:04:56.070]not just posting and then ghosting.
- [00:04:58.585]And then leaving, yeah, for the rest of the week.
- [00:05:01.297]So that's why we kind of broke it up in these two ways.
- [00:05:03.230]A couple other things regarding discussions.
- [00:05:05.280]Since this is such a large class
- [00:05:08.010]we divided you into discussion groups.
- [00:05:11.680]So at this point there are I think 11 students in each,
- [00:05:16.000]a total of three different discussion groups.
- [00:05:18.700]So you will only be participating in discussions
- [00:05:21.570]with the people withinin your group.
- [00:05:25.960]What you'll read on here, for the most part,
- [00:05:28.250]with the exception of week one,
- [00:05:29.600]which I'll go into a little more detail,
- [00:05:33.060]the weeks run from Friday to Thursday,
- [00:05:36.550]which is a little different if you've taken
- [00:05:38.960]an online course with me or in the past,
- [00:05:42.220]is a little different from what
- [00:05:44.070]the format may have been.
- [00:05:45.470]But the goal, the reason we did this,
- [00:05:47.320]is to really give you a chance over the weekend
- [00:05:50.210]to just begin reading your content and material
- [00:05:53.050]and then the majority of the interaction
- [00:05:55.540]should happen during the work week,
- [00:05:58.220]if you will, Monday through Thursday.
- [00:06:01.030]That's the intention of us kind of shifting it that way.
- [00:06:04.340]And so just remember that your first discussion post,
- [00:06:08.810]that initial post, is due by Sunday
- [00:06:11.140]with the goal of kind of starting the discussion,
- [00:06:13.810]and then all remaining posts
- [00:06:15.310]are due by the following Thursday.
- [00:06:21.000]And then the only other note about discussions
- [00:06:23.130]is that we really really want you
- [00:06:25.850]to focus on posting substantive quality posts.
- [00:06:31.250]Not just posting for the sake of posting.
- [00:06:35.390]But at the same time, not writing us an essay.
- [00:06:38.810]The idea is that online courses
- [00:06:41.290]are a little different than in person,
- [00:06:42.930]but one way they're of the same,
- [00:06:44.440]is that the expectation is when you're participating
- [00:06:46.580]in discussion you're not going on and on and on.
- [00:06:50.210]We want you to try and state your thoughts
- [00:06:53.340]as clearly and concisely as possible,
- [00:06:55.670]and then give your classmates an opportunity
- [00:06:57.850]to chime in or expand on those as well.
- [00:07:03.020]So moving on with the syllabus,
- [00:07:06.061]there's the rubric for the discussions,
- [00:07:09.090]and then in terms of assignments, we will have
- [00:07:12.270]a total of nine assignments worth 15 points each.
- [00:07:18.880]Rather than giving you all the information
- [00:07:20.770]about the assignments here, the individual information
- [00:07:24.220]about those assignments will be posted
- [00:07:25.980]in their corresponding weekly pages.
- [00:07:29.190]One thing to just note about the assignments is that
- [00:07:33.370]for every day they are late,
- [00:07:35.300]you will be docked a full letter grade.
- [00:07:37.440]So our encouragement is just to
- [00:07:41.080]get those assignments in on time.
- [00:07:44.110]You will also have weekly quizzes for every week.
- [00:07:49.180]The purpose of these is just to ensure
- [00:07:52.270]you are understanding the content covered in the readings.
- [00:07:56.650]So the quizzes will address the content in the readings
- [00:08:01.260]as well as the content covered perhaps
- [00:08:03.140]in the links and so forth,
- [00:08:04.510]but they'll always be directly related to that.
- [00:08:09.350]You will see that beginning, I think we say in week nine,
- [00:08:15.470]we are going to start having article presentations,
- [00:08:19.110]which you will have the fortune
- [00:08:22.510]of working with a partner on,
- [00:08:25.330]and starting that week quiz questions
- [00:08:29.050]may also be pulled from those articles.
- [00:08:31.400]Again, more information and details
- [00:08:33.320]will be provided as we get into that,
- [00:08:35.420]but just wanted to bring that to your attention now.
- [00:08:42.786]So as I said, starting in week nine
- [00:08:44.610]we are going to have partner article presentations.
- [00:08:47.820]This really a partner activity.
- [00:08:49.740]You'll be assigned a research article
- [00:08:53.270]in which you and a partner will
- [00:08:56.500]analyze and summarize and then present to the class.
- [00:09:00.410]You'll record this in a Power Point presentation
- [00:09:04.710]or a Canva or whatever platform you choose to use.
- [00:09:11.260]And again, more details regarding that assignment
- [00:09:14.360]will be provided later in the course.
- [00:09:17.760]Finally, we will have two exams in the course,
- [00:09:20.780]a midterm exam, which will cover the first
- [00:09:24.110]I think its six weeks of the course,
- [00:09:26.740]and then a final exam.
- [00:09:29.902]So the final's not comprehensive,
- [00:09:31.240]it'll cover those last remaining weeks,
- [00:09:34.480]and the exams are open book, open note.
- [00:09:38.100]However, they will be timed,
- [00:09:39.720]and you'll have to take them in one sitting.
- [00:09:43.370]As with just about everything else,
- [00:09:44.900]we'll provide more information about that
- [00:09:47.052]as it gets closer.
- [00:09:49.830]And then just the remaining information
- [00:09:51.730]in the syllabus regarding grading,
- [00:09:53.690]grading scale, our notes and student conduct,
- [00:09:56.830]I'll leave that for you to read,
- [00:09:58.140]but be sure to read through it
- [00:09:59.750]as well as I've included the
- [00:10:01.470]Nebraska Deaf Education Standards.
- [00:10:04.970]The other important piece of information
- [00:10:08.060]on the homepage is the course outline.
- [00:10:11.080]As I mentioned earlier, with the exception of week one,
- [00:10:15.500]all your weeks will run Friday through Thursday.
- [00:10:19.700]So that is how we've set up the dates on here.
- [00:10:22.970]Week one, because the semester does not
- [00:10:25.230]officially begin Monday, is going to be a short week
- [00:10:29.120]because we wanted to get some information
- [00:10:33.045]in this first week, but then get on our
- [00:10:35.943]kind of schedule with Friday to Thursday.
- [00:10:39.190]So week one will run technically Monday through Thursday.
- [00:10:43.801]We have some content for you to review.
- [00:10:47.770]But then starting as early as the Friday of week one,
- [00:10:52.354]we're gonna move into week two content
- [00:10:55.050]and get on our schedule of Friday to Thursday.
- [00:10:58.980]All this information and the due dates
- [00:11:01.190]for your discussion, your assignments, your quizzes
- [00:11:04.180]will be posted at the bottom here
- [00:11:06.170]on the homepage of the course summary.
- [00:11:08.390]So be sure to attend to that.
- [00:11:10.240]It's a very useful tool to remind you
- [00:11:12.500]of upcoming assignments and due dates.
- [00:11:17.250]So moving on to the navigation pane,
- [00:11:20.090]these are the navigation tools
- [00:11:23.430]that you will see in your view.
- [00:11:27.650]In addition to the homepage we have the announcements.
- [00:11:30.910]So all recent announcements will be posted
- [00:11:34.165]on the top of your homepage, but any additional
- [00:11:37.524]announcements after three will be
- [00:11:39.970]on the announcements tab.
- [00:11:41.530]So if you want to be reminded
- [00:11:42.850]of what announcements there are, visit that.
- [00:11:45.320]You should also be getting all announcements via email.
- [00:11:49.550]If you are not getting those please let us know,
- [00:11:52.426]because it might be something you need to enable.
- [00:11:55.970]Yeah, please make sure that you're using
- [00:11:57.700]an email address in your canvas account
- [00:11:59.640]that you're checking regularly
- [00:12:01.160]so you get those announcements.
- [00:12:03.300]Yeah, cause we communicate, a big portion
- [00:12:05.590]of our communication happens through announcements.
- [00:12:09.610]The modules tab is really your most important tab,
- [00:12:13.855]and that's where all the content will be found.
- [00:12:17.572]So I'm going to click on the modules tab.
- [00:12:20.250]At this point, at the top of your modules tab,
- [00:12:23.190]you will have access to just general inforamtion.
- [00:12:26.200]We have a discussion link entitled
- [00:12:29.207]"Course Related Question" and this is just
- [00:12:31.510]a discussion board for the entire course
- [00:12:33.954]to post questions related to the course.
- [00:12:37.010]We will get notifications when those come in.
- [00:12:39.790]If it's a very pressing question or an urgent one,
- [00:12:42.630]we do advise you to email us, because sometimes
- [00:12:47.810]we don't get these notifications until later,
- [00:12:50.658]but if its something that would be useful
- [00:12:53.440]for everybody to know we encourage you to
- [00:12:56.180]post it there and we will respond there.
- [00:12:58.610]There are also Canvas student guides,
- [00:13:00.700]if there are certain aspects of Canvas
- [00:13:02.800]you're not certain about or certain tools
- [00:13:06.680]or ways of navigating Canvas, that's where you go.
- [00:13:11.170]You go to the Canvas student guides
- [00:13:13.060]and they basically have everything you could
- [00:13:14.990]possibly want to know about Canvas.
- [00:13:19.020]So then the major point, when
- [00:13:20.900]your module page is published you will have
- [00:13:23.160]access to course weekly pages.
- [00:13:25.300]We will only be releasing them a week at a time.
- [00:13:30.280]So your first week, week one, I just thought
- [00:13:32.340]it'd be helpful to click on it
- [00:13:33.430]and kind of give you a preview of
- [00:13:34.950]how we've kind of formatted these.
- [00:13:37.610]So every weekly page, you will obviously have your topic.
- [00:13:42.840]They'll be organized.
- [00:13:44.070]Every page will start with
- [00:13:45.280]an overview and weekly learning objectives.
- [00:13:48.400]So these learning objectives are really the key focus
- [00:13:51.290]that we plan to address over the course of the week.
- [00:13:55.810]And then for the most part I'd recommend
- [00:13:58.680]going through the content as its posted.
- [00:14:01.970]So for week one we actually asked you
- [00:14:03.960]to get started on some things,
- [00:14:06.708]such as introducing yourself to the class,
- [00:14:09.750]reviewing the course syllabus, this course orientation
- [00:14:12.970]and course related questions,
- [00:14:14.980]and taking care of all of that
- [00:14:16.670]before you dig in to the actual content.
- [00:14:19.930]And then we have links provided for all the content.
- [00:14:24.310]For week one we have been kind enough to post
- [00:14:27.950]chapter one of your Schutts and Nevins textbook
- [00:14:30.810]in the event that your book has not arrived,
- [00:14:33.550]but we will not be doing that over the course
- [00:14:36.040]of the semester, but we just wanted to ensure
- [00:14:38.900]that students had it for this week.
- [00:14:41.170]If at any point you're clicking on the link
- [00:14:43.370]and it does not work or it's not taking you
- [00:14:46.170]to where it needs to go, which will happen on occasion,
- [00:14:49.560]we kindly you ask you to email us
- [00:14:51.670]and let us know that so we can fix it.
- [00:14:54.540]And then, every week you'll have a discussion.
- [00:14:57.861]I've put a reminder here just in terms of
- [00:15:00.850]the format of the discussion and the timeframe.
- [00:15:03.830]As I said before, week one is going to be a short week,
- [00:15:07.130]so we ask you to get your discussions in early.
- [00:15:09.570]The first one by Tuesday, the final ones by Thursday,
- [00:15:12.900]and then after this week your discussions
- [00:15:16.340]will run Friday through Thursday,
- [00:15:20.480]with the first one being posted by Sunday,
- [00:15:23.430]and then the all remaining by Thursday.
- [00:15:26.660]And then finally, your quizzes for every week.
- [00:15:30.550]Quizzes will open, in general,
- [00:15:33.680]we don't release them on Friday.
- [00:15:36.660]We'll release them, I think we said
- [00:15:37.970]on Sunday for the most part,
- [00:15:39.450]and then they'll be due, again,
- [00:15:40.920]at the end of the week Thursday.
- [00:15:47.070]Outside of the modules page, we've also provided
- [00:15:50.720]links to both the discussions and quizzes tabs
- [00:15:54.920]just for easy access to those.
- [00:15:58.290]And then of course your grades,
- [00:16:00.740]and then you have some access to people within the course
- [00:16:03.770]should you want to contact them.
- [00:16:07.500]So I think that's about it for the overview.
- [00:16:12.980]I'm looking here at my notes, I wanted to make sure.
- [00:16:15.660]So the goal of this was to just kind of
- [00:16:19.050]get you oriented to the course.
- [00:16:21.410]If you have questions or are unclear about anything
- [00:16:24.680]feel free to email us or post it
- [00:16:26.540]in the course related questions.
- [00:16:28.190]And don't forget to also read the syllabus
- [00:16:30.050]because some of your questions
- [00:16:32.270]might be answered in the syllabus.
- [00:16:34.671]Oh yes, and you remind me, so for this first week quiz
- [00:16:37.450]some of the questions will be related to
- [00:16:38.743]some of the information covered in the syllabus
- [00:16:41.147]and this orientation, so be sure to get familiar with those.
- [00:16:45.300]Alright, thanks and have a great week.
