- [00:00:00.000](vibrant music)
- [00:00:13.020]My research can be informed
- [00:00:14.840]by the practice and policy makers and the community
- [00:00:17.730]because that's the heart of my work.
- [00:00:19.760]I'm an early childhood Extension specialist
- [00:00:22.010]and an assistant professor
- [00:00:23.520]in Child, Youth and Family Studies.
- [00:00:25.360]And the mission of my work is to help enhance
- [00:00:29.380]and improve the lives of children,
- [00:00:32.330]improve their health and well-being.
- [00:00:33.550]And so it's really important
- [00:00:35.760]that I am that bridge for the university
- [00:00:38.220]in terms of connecting my work
- [00:00:39.800]and the work of the university with the community.
- [00:00:42.370]The role of Extension is to serve
- [00:00:44.890]as a vehicle and a bridge to connect our work
- [00:00:47.130]here at the research with policy makers and practitioners,
- [00:00:51.080]but to do it in a process where we're co-creating
- [00:00:53.880]that work and that research,
- [00:00:55.140]so we're not just coming out and saying,
- [00:00:57.260]here's what we did at the university,
- [00:00:59.050]and now we're going to give it to you,
- [00:01:00.740]we want you to apply it.
- [00:01:01.870]So it's bringing them on board at the beginning
- [00:01:04.360]and making them a part of that co-creation and that process,
- [00:01:07.460]and ensuring that the work we do is usable and relatable.
- [00:01:11.120]Different people are in their own individual silos,
- [00:01:15.050]but it's really important to take advantage
- [00:01:16.830]of knowledge that we have in psychology
- [00:01:18.630]and also information from people in education
- [00:01:21.180]and bring those things together
- [00:01:22.460]to create more informed research and more informed practice.
- [00:01:25.800]Well, as a researcher, one of the biggest challenges
- [00:01:28.800]is conducting field-based research.
- [00:01:32.170]And so I think that one way
- [00:01:33.930]that the policy community or the practice community
- [00:01:36.740]can really help researchers is to be collaborative.
- [00:01:40.260]And for researchers, not only we have questions
- [00:01:42.690]we want to address, but the policy makers
- [00:01:45.440]and the practitioners do as well,
- [00:01:46.690]and if we can work together to devise a study
- [00:01:50.380]or our research to address both of things simultaneously,
- [00:01:53.830]I think that can be really beneficial towards
- [00:01:55.970]helping both parties all throughout the research process.
- [00:01:59.200]I believe we really need to take to heart as researchers
- [00:02:04.310]that our research needs to include our participants.
- [00:02:09.800]And see participants, the children and the family
- [00:02:14.350]and the teachers that we're doing research on,
- [00:02:16.870]that we think about doing it as research with them.
- [00:02:20.490]And that by doing that, we have the opportunity
- [00:02:24.410]to make better connections as well, as researchers.
