[00:00:33.223]I guess we'll get started here,
[00:00:34.470]but tell us a little bit about yourself,
[00:00:36.160]and what brought you to the University of Nebraska,
[00:00:38.330]and to the College of Engineering.
[00:00:39.720]It's actually, sort of, a funny story
[00:00:42.250]because I originally had no intention
[00:00:44.390]of coming to Nebraska.
[00:00:45.940]I was on the faculty at the University of Texas,
[00:00:48.710]at San Antonio.
[00:00:49.710]I was in the process of applying for faculty jobs,
[00:00:51.825]and actually had four offers already,
[00:00:55.280]including one from the University of Maryland,
[00:00:57.010]at College Park, which is a top 10
[00:00:58.780]college of engineering, and about 45 minutes
[00:01:01.140]from where my wife and I grew up,
[00:01:02.820]so we had pretty much decided we were going to go there,
[00:01:05.220]when I saw the ad for Nebraska.
[00:01:06.360]And when I saw the ad for Nebraska,
[00:01:08.300]I was talking with my wife, and I said,
[00:01:10.887]"you know, my dad was born in Nebraska,
[00:01:12.620]I've never been there, I've never seen where he was born,
[00:01:14.860]so why don't I apply, I'll get the interview,
[00:01:17.404]I'll get to come out to Nebraska
[00:01:19.190]and see where my father was born,
[00:01:20.480]and then we can go to Maryland."
[00:01:21.560]So, sure enough, I applied for the job
[00:01:24.020]and got the interview, and came out to Lincoln to interview,
[00:01:27.260]now we have to realize,
[00:01:28.093]my dad was born in Trenton, Nebraska, which is near McCook,
[00:01:31.170]so you can tell how much I knew about Nebraska geography.
[00:01:33.525](both hosts laugh)
[00:01:34.500]I thought I'd be able to sneak out of my interview
[00:01:36.197]and get to Trenton, to see where my fater was born,
[00:01:38.709]needless to say that didn't happen.
[00:01:41.158]I had a really good interview experience.
[00:01:42.920]When I came out, my wife had come out with me,
[00:01:46.120]she had a great experience.
[00:01:49.410]the chair of the Department of Electric Engineering
[00:01:51.320]at the time, and his wife Tracy, and all the faculty
[00:01:54.460]at the university just did a really good job
[00:01:56.460]of recruiting us.
[00:01:57.660]And we got back on the plane for San Antonio,
[00:02:00.050]and I looked at my wife and I said,
[00:02:01.437]"We need to get ready for the move to Maryland."
[00:02:03.074]My wife said, "I think we need to talk about Lincoln."
[00:02:05.880]And that was 22 years ago, so.
[00:02:09.936]I think what that tells me is,
[00:02:10.990]if you're looking at Nebraska, and you've never been here,
[00:02:12.623]what you need to do is just come here, see it,
[00:02:15.040]see the place, and that can change some minds.
[00:02:18.100]Yeah, it's absolutely true,
[00:02:19.660]and it continues to play out to this day,
[00:02:21.540]that with faculty, staff, and students,
[00:02:24.410]once we get them here, we have a very,
[00:02:26.160]very high success rate, but we have to get them here,
[00:02:28.840]because there are a lot of misconceptions
[00:02:31.250]about Nebraska as a state.
[00:02:32.700]What things about the university, about the city,
[00:02:35.610]and the College of Engineering in particular,
[00:02:37.434]do you think are the difference makers
[00:02:39.790]when students and faculty are considering coming here?
[00:02:42.460]Yeah, I think there's a commonality across the state,
[00:02:45.930]in the city of Lincoln, and in the university
[00:02:47.920]and the college, that people really appreciate
[00:02:50.890]how welcoming a community that Nebraska, and Lincoln,
[00:02:55.161]and the university have.
[00:02:57.030]It really is a very strong sense of community.
[00:02:59.770]People are supportive, are friendly, it's safe,
[00:03:02.670]it's a very high quality of life,
[00:03:04.357]doesn't have a lot of the stresses of big cities,
[00:03:08.215]so great public schools, great parks,
[00:03:12.210]so it's a very high quality of life,
[00:03:13.610]and I think when you couple that with this very quiet pride
[00:03:16.670]that Nebraska has, that we expect excellence,
[00:03:19.890]in across everything that we do,
[00:03:22.000]and you find that in the community,
[00:03:23.950]you find that in the university,
[00:03:24.783]you find that in the college, and so,
[00:03:26.700]whether it's faculty, staff, or students,
[00:03:28.290]they get here, and I think they really find
[00:03:30.380]that combination powerful.
[00:03:32.430]We are always trying to be the best,
[00:03:34.610]yet we do it in a way that's very friendly.
[00:03:37.010]Wanting to be the best, and improving,
[00:03:39.241]is something that I know that you've had in your sights
[00:03:42.230]for the college.
[00:03:43.396]You're fairly new to the full time job as Dean.
[00:03:47.973]You just started your full time appointment
[00:03:49.720]just this year.
[00:03:50.553]What do you see as a vision for this college
[00:03:52.590]in the next five or 10 years?
[00:03:54.490]It's clear that we need to build a College of Engineering
[00:03:57.840]that is a driver of economic development in the state.
[00:04:00.800]If we want to have a bright future
[00:04:01.970]for all of the young Nebraskans,
[00:04:04.670]we need to develop a much more diverse economy
[00:04:07.440]in the state, and the College of Engineering
[00:04:09.118]should play a critical role in that.
[00:04:11.430]Stem jobs, nationally, are growing by about 10%.
[00:04:14.793]In Nebraska, they're only growing by about 2%.
[00:04:17.640]It's clear that the future and the economy
[00:04:19.610]in the United States is technology based,
[00:04:22.240]and so we need to build a College of Engineering
[00:04:24.650]that's help driving that kind of economic development.
[00:04:27.010]And we do that two ways, one is through
[00:04:30.470]our undergraduate education,
[00:04:33.210]that is educating the workforce for tomorrow.
[00:04:35.880]There are several major industries in the state,
[00:04:38.990]particularly civil engineering,
[00:04:40.640]architectural engineering and design,
[00:04:42.672]and related construction fields
[00:04:45.418]that are about to undergo a generational change,
[00:04:48.130]and we need to provide that next generation of workforce.
[00:04:51.170]And then, we need to build a research enterprise
[00:04:53.569]that is creating new technologies, and new jobs,
[00:04:58.420]and allowing existing industry to innovate more quickly,
[00:05:01.860]so that we are developing
[00:05:03.350]another sector of the economy in Nebraska.
[00:05:07.530]A good example of this is in software engineering,
[00:05:10.440]where there's an emerging software engineering industry
[00:05:13.600]in Nebraska, in Omaha, and Lincoln,
[00:05:15.717]and we need to be driving the development of that sector
[00:05:19.610]of Nebraska's economy.
[00:05:20.890]And we can go across the engineering disciplines,
[00:05:22.950]and see that there are,
[00:05:23.783]I mean, if you look at energy production,
[00:05:25.483]Nebraska can play a big role in that,
[00:05:27.700]whether it's ethanol, or whether it's wind,
[00:05:29.490]whether it's solar,
[00:05:30.650]the college needs to be leading that effort.
[00:05:33.050]And I know that's something the college just recently,
[00:05:35.226]last couple years, started the software engineering program,
[00:05:38.010]so that's something that's new.
[00:05:39.570]You mentioned, we want to build the college,
[00:05:42.140]some of that comes with buildings.
[00:05:44.471]So, I know we have a few building projects
[00:05:46.520]that are on the docket now,
[00:05:47.950]and then some that are long-term,
[00:05:49.440]can you go over, a little bit,
[00:05:50.790]what we're doing right now at the College.
[00:05:53.820]So, we're fortunate to have
[00:05:55.813]some major capital projects underway.
[00:05:59.400]Before I describe those in detail,
[00:06:00.790]I think it's important to realize
[00:06:02.170]that part of building that college,
[00:06:04.630]that's gonna drive economic development in the state,
[00:06:07.010]is also making the college bigger and stronger.
[00:06:09.310]Just like many industries, higher-ed is competitive now
[00:06:14.040]in a way that it didn't used to be, and you have to grow
[00:06:16.600]if you're going to really survive and thrive,
[00:06:18.680]so our strategy moving forward
[00:06:20.560]to become that economic driver in the state
[00:06:22.480]involves growth, and growth requires great facilities.
[00:06:27.020]So, if we're going to educate the engineer
[00:06:29.050]of the 21st century, if we're gonna conduct research
[00:06:31.670]that's solving the major problems that are facing the world,
[00:06:34.680]we have to have the facilities that support
[00:06:36.660]both that kind of education, and that kind of research.
[00:06:39.780]So, we currently have two phases of construction
[00:06:43.020]of capital projects planned.
[00:06:45.090]So, the first phase was approved
[00:06:47.000]by the Board of Regents in August.
[00:06:48.820]It's a 75 million dollar, primarily a renovation project.
[00:06:53.820]So, we're extremely fortunate to have received
[00:06:56.023]an allocation of 70 million dollars
[00:06:58.920]from the state and the university, through LB957,
[00:07:02.340]and then we're adding in five million dollars
[00:07:04.550]of private philanthropy to that
[00:07:06.090]for this 75 million dollar project.
[00:07:08.390]And that project will accomplish two things,
[00:07:10.800]it will tear down and rebuild the building
[00:07:12.500]that we refer to as The Link,
[00:07:14.150]that connects Scott Engineering Center to Nebraska Hall,
[00:07:17.940]and then it will renovate
[00:07:19.000]the majority of Scott Engineering Center.
[00:07:20.900]And when that project is completed in the fall of 2022,
[00:07:24.630]we'll have about 200,000 square feet
[00:07:27.260]of just state of the art space
[00:07:29.220]to support both research and education,
[00:07:31.530]but it won't accommodate a lot of growth,
[00:07:34.440]it'll accommodate a little bit of growth,
[00:07:36.230]but when you look at the amount of hiring
[00:07:37.700]that we're gonna be doing over that same period,
[00:07:39.610]and the growth in enrollments that we expect to see
[00:07:42.030]over that same period of time, we'll likely be at capacity
[00:07:45.567]as that first phase of construction is completed.
[00:07:49.570]So, we're also planning a second phase
[00:07:52.550]of capital investment, which involves
[00:07:55.210]building a brand new engineering building
[00:07:57.262]at the intersection, roughly the intersection
[00:07:59.660]of 17th and Vine Street.
[00:08:01.170]This will be an 85 million dollar project,
[00:08:03.940]that will be funded entirely with private money,
[00:08:06.430]and that building will accommodate the growth
[00:08:08.487]of the college for the next several decades,
[00:08:10.910]and we'll be focused on engineering education,
[00:08:14.946]particularly our undergraduate mission,
[00:08:16.836]and will more than likely include,
[00:08:20.130]a significant presence from our civil engineering
[00:08:22.820]and construction programs.

[00:08:28.931]we have our Complete Engineer Initiative,
[00:08:31.377]and we're kind of interested to hear from you,
[00:08:33.380]can you help describe what that means,
[00:08:35.210]to be a complete engineering, what that means to you,
[00:08:37.490]and what makes that unique
[00:08:39.030]here at the University of Nebraska?
[00:08:41.410]We're very proud of the Complete Engineer Initiative.
[00:08:43.860]To understand it, I think you have to go back a little bit
[00:08:46.430]and realize that 20, 30 years ago,
[00:08:49.690]when people like myself were being educated as engineers,
[00:08:52.270]it was all about technical skills.
[00:08:53.870]Could you do the math?
[00:08:54.930]Could you do the design?
[00:08:56.570]Could you do the analysis
[00:08:58.950]that was required to be a good engineer?
[00:09:01.357]And of course, those skills are still critically important
[00:09:04.040]to any engineer, but it's also become clear
[00:09:06.916]that additional skills are needed to be a good engineer,
[00:09:11.230]and that's whether you're gonna be a traditional engineer,
[00:09:13.830]whether you're gonna be an academic like myself,
[00:09:15.930]or whether you're gonna use your engineering education
[00:09:19.020]as a launch pad into medical school or law school,
[00:09:21.810]or going to work for a non-profit
[00:09:23.760]to help get clean water supplies in third-world countries.
[00:09:27.600]Engineering is inherently a global endeavor.
[00:09:30.670]It doesn't matter whether you're working for a small company
[00:09:32.790]in Lincoln, or for a huge company like Boeing,
[00:09:36.305]that clearly has a global presence.
[00:09:39.020]Engineering is inherently global,
[00:09:40.435]and involves communication,
[00:09:42.500]involves inter-disciplinary work,
[00:09:44.130]involves working with teams,
[00:09:45.630]so what we set about to do with The Complete Engineer,
[00:09:48.820]was to make sure that our undergraduates and graduates
[00:09:52.852]left the university with more than just technical skills.
[00:09:57.498]So, The Complete Engineer is built around six competencies,
[00:10:02.210]intercultural appreciation, leadership, teamwork,
[00:10:06.290]self-management, service and civic responsibility,
[00:10:09.760]and engineering ethics.
[00:10:11.210]And what we try to do with The Complete Engineer program,
[00:10:13.714]which is primarily an extra and co-curricular program,
[00:10:17.260]is give our students opportunities
[00:10:18.940]to develop these non-technical competencies.
[00:10:21.490]We're a national leader in this,
[00:10:23.440]and building programs that support
[00:10:25.630]the development of these non-technical skills.
[00:10:27.782]Our students are starting to see
[00:10:30.110]that this is a competitive advantage for them
[00:10:32.080]when they interview, because when they interview,
[00:10:34.290]they're able to talk about their educational experience
[00:10:36.533]in a much more holistic way than a typical graduate would,
[00:10:41.600]and employers are really valuing these skills.
[00:10:44.490]Of course, the technical side will always matter,
[00:10:46.744]and this is not meant to diminish the technical side,
[00:10:49.800]but it's about really rounding out who our graduates are
[00:10:53.045]as people and as engineers.
[00:10:55.427]And it was driven by feedback from industry.
[00:10:58.634]The people in the industry were saying
[00:11:00.430]that this is what they wanted from engineering graduates
[00:11:02.810]in general, and this is something
[00:11:04.360]we thought we could give them.
[00:11:05.350]Certainly, that part of the impetus for this program.
[00:11:07.766]Even the accreditation criteria
[00:11:10.580]explicitly look at things like teamwork
[00:11:12.385]and communication skills,
[00:11:14.740]but we really fleshed it out,
[00:11:16.380]based on some other experiences that we've had,
[00:11:19.350]both on our faculty side and on the student side.
[00:11:22.110]But yeah, we certainly hope it's being responsive
[00:11:24.400]to industries needs.
[00:11:25.610]Part of The Complete Engineer Initiative is,
[00:11:27.870]as I understand it, is building the well rounded engineer,
[00:11:30.990]somebody who's got life in order,
[00:11:33.550]and part of that is having interests outside of engineering,
[00:11:36.550]and what interests do you have outside of engineering?
[00:11:39.440]When you break away from the office,
[00:11:41.070]what things give you that break that you so need?
[00:11:45.283]I think work/life balance is important to everybody,
[00:11:47.400]and certainly engineers are very hard working,
[00:11:49.859]and they have to have
[00:11:51.020]that kind of work/life balance as well.
[00:11:53.380]It makes us better engineers when we have that,
[00:11:55.770]so I do carve some time out of my schedule for hobbies.
[00:11:59.740]Probably my two biggest hobbies are travel,
[00:12:03.140]so I've been really fortunate in my life,
[00:12:05.517]I've traveled to over 60 countries in the last 30 years.
[00:12:09.720]I've been to six continents.
[00:12:12.000]I was fortunate to live in Europe for almost a year.
[00:12:14.900]So, I continue to travel extensively with my wife
[00:12:17.324]and family as well.
[00:12:18.840]And then another thing that I do is,
[00:12:20.890]I do wheel chair athletics, I've done that for 30 years,
[00:12:24.310]and I'm very fortunate that in Nebraska,
[00:12:26.725]there's great support for wheelchair athletics
[00:12:29.070]in both Lincoln and Omaha.
[00:12:30.610]So, in Lincoln, we have a basketball team
[00:12:33.440]that's supported by Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital,
[00:12:37.080]and I've played on that team for about 20 years.
[00:12:39.920]I'm in semi-retirement on the basketball side.

[00:12:43.880]It's a sport for younger men and women than I am,
[00:12:47.480]but I still practice.
[00:12:48.743]And then also, in Omaha,
[00:12:50.380]we're fortunate to have a wheelchair softball team,
[00:12:52.700]the Nebraska Barons,
[00:12:53.939]that's supported by Alegent Health System,
[00:12:56.750]and I've been playing on that team for 15 years.
[00:12:59.840]We've won 12 world championships.
[00:13:02.480]In the last 15 years, so it's--
[00:13:04.997]We are the best team in the world.
[00:13:06.060]It's a lot of fun.
[00:13:06.893]It's also some of my best friends.
[00:13:08.990]Every Tuesday night, late spring to early fall,
[00:13:12.380]I drive to Omaha and practice with my friends,
[00:13:14.760]and then we go to a national tournament.
[00:13:16.570]And I've been fortunate to also play
[00:13:18.470]on the Team USA wheelchair softball team
[00:13:21.410]as well for two years.
[00:13:23.870]And have gone to Japan to compete
[00:13:25.980]in an international tournament.
[00:13:27.140]And we're hoping to get wheelchair softball recognized,
[00:13:29.912]eventually as a paralympic sport.
[00:13:32.316]Wow that's great.
[00:13:33.680]You mentioned six continents,
[00:13:35.179]Antarctica, is that what we're missing?
[00:13:37.240]We are missing Antarctica.
[00:13:40.726]Where have, you've been to a lot of countries,
[00:13:43.010]but what's one of the top one or two
[00:13:44.970]that you can't get back to enough?
[00:13:47.430]Oh wow, that's a tough question.
[00:13:49.660]I've loved them all really.
[00:13:51.510]Probably either, there's the two places
[00:13:53.660]that I go to the most are, I of course, love Europe.
[00:13:57.236]My wife and I have traveled extensively
[00:13:59.600]in Germany and Italy, and Spain.
[00:14:02.290]We really love that part of Europe a lot.
[00:14:04.520]And then, of course, the second place is Latin America.
[00:14:07.640]I'm just a huge fan of every, you know, Colombia,
[00:14:10.630]Venezuela, Chile, Peru, Argentina, and Brazil,
[00:14:14.810]I just love South America and Latin America.
[00:14:18.520]It's just a great culture, really interesting,
[00:14:21.030]beautiful, full of potential,
[00:14:22.850]so those are the two places we go to the most.
[00:14:25.720]Is there anything that you haven't seen
[00:14:27.980]that you've got on, kind of, a bucket list you wanna see?
[00:14:31.350]Yeah, lemme think about that, I actually do.

[00:14:34.440]I'd love to get to the Middle East,
[00:14:36.911]love to see Jerusalem, Beirut, Tripoli,
[00:14:41.670]all these great cities of the Middle Eastern culture.
[00:14:45.590]I'm actually going to Lebanon in December
[00:14:48.300]for an accreditation visit, but I don't think
[00:14:50.622]I'm gonna get to see much, because of security concerns,
[00:14:53.570]but I'd love to spend some time in the Middle East.
[00:14:55.690]And then, there's sort of,
[00:14:56.660]a couple check list type of things.
[00:14:58.533]I'm not actually a big tourist.
[00:15:01.789]When we go places, we're much more about
[00:15:04.010]sort of, wandering the side streets,
[00:15:05.581]and getting to know local culture,
[00:15:08.150]rather than start checking off tourist sites,
[00:15:10.340]but I'd love to see Machu Picchu,
[00:15:12.395]I'd love to see Angkor Wat, I need to go to Iceland,
[00:15:15.520]and Greenland too, those are two places I wanna go.
[00:15:18.670]I wanna see the aurora borealis as well,
[00:15:20.930]I've never seen that.
[00:15:22.250]Those are, sort of, on the bucket list.
[00:15:24.470]And also, I've traveled to 49 out of the 50 states,
[00:15:27.070]so the only state I haven't been in is Alaska,
[00:15:29.410]so I need to get Alaska taken care of.

[00:16:34.930]but when I was a freshman and sophomore in college,
[00:16:38.010]I thought it was a big deal
[00:16:39.030]to learn how to use a slide rule.
[00:16:40.370]I couldn't do it anymore,
[00:16:41.390]but there was a moment in time when I knew how to use one.
