- [00:00:07.000]My name is Jordan Bothern.
- [00:00:08.460]I am a senior mechanized systems management student
- [00:00:11.610]here at the University of Nebraska
- [00:00:13.560]and I am also a Cultivate Access ambassador.
- [00:00:16.670]Today I am here to introduce to you
- [00:00:18.480]Irma Nicholls a senior design engineer
- [00:00:21.170]for LI-COR Bio Sciences.
- [00:00:34.350]I do the optical design for the
- [00:00:38.260]bio-technology line of instruments
- [00:00:43.409]and so I work with
- [00:00:45.600]lenses cameras and lasers here to
- [00:00:50.300]bring the light to a sample
- [00:00:52.880]and then collect fluorescence from it.
- [00:00:59.930]We work in different projects
- [00:01:02.080]and each project has a team of engineers.
- [00:01:07.570]There is usually a mechanical, electrical,
- [00:01:12.000]optics, and software and
- [00:01:15.130]we all work together
- [00:01:19.420]on the design of an instrument until we
- [00:01:23.920]put it together and sometimes we have to do
- [00:01:28.330]evaluations and proto-types first
- [00:01:30.600]and then we go into the development of the whole instrument.
- [00:01:40.760]I like the idea of
- [00:01:43.590]working in a team of people and solving problems together.
- [00:01:48.350]When I get a system to test
- [00:01:50.760]we may have either a mechanical issue or a software issue
- [00:01:55.070]that somebody else needs to come and look at it and
- [00:01:59.030]be able to interpret what is coming out of the instrument
- [00:02:02.180]and be able to see where the problem might be.
- [00:02:11.488]When I was about to start college my
- [00:02:14.120]parents decided that it would be a good idea for me to
- [00:02:16.240]attend the University of Arizona,
- [00:02:19.790]in Tucson and so that's where I went to college and
- [00:02:26.760]right about when I was about to finish my senior year
- [00:02:31.770]there was a job fair that I attended
- [00:02:34.610]and I saw people from LI-COR there and I got to see like
- [00:02:37.570]all these instruments and
- [00:02:41.185]I was really interested, I really liked it and so
- [00:02:45.150]I started talking to them and asking for work.
- [00:02:53.800]I'm working on a master's degree and
- [00:02:57.420]I have a twelve year old son,
- [00:02:59.530]so that usually takes up the time outside of work.
- [00:03:04.252](mellow guitar music)
