- [00:00:03.100]Hello, and welcome.
- [00:00:05.210]Today we spotlight a few of the ways our alumni
- [00:00:08.280]and community partners collaborate with our college.
- [00:00:11.900]The alumni association's current issue of
- [00:00:14.410]Nebraska Quarterly Magazine,
- [00:00:16.490]features our class of 1968.
- [00:00:19.000]Celebrating it's 50th graduation anniversary.
- [00:00:22.890]Their fundraiser increased the scholarship fund
- [00:00:25.770]to endowment level.
- [00:00:27.770]I encourage you to read about this remarkable group
- [00:00:30.880]of architecture alumni.
- [00:00:33.510]Whether it's funding a scholarship
- [00:00:35.620]or improving communities,
- [00:00:37.580]our alumni are making tracks.
- [00:00:40.270]A lot of this is in the floodplain.
- [00:00:42.060]Community and regional planning alum Dallas McGee,
- [00:00:45.000]had a hand in Lincoln's renaissance,
- [00:00:47.160]and his role with the city's urban development department.
- [00:00:51.020]Dallas has worked on two downtown master plans.
- [00:00:55.300]The 2005 plan identified a framework
- [00:00:58.190]that ultimately resulted in
- [00:00:59.800]1.3 billion dollars of investment in downtown Lincoln.
- [00:01:04.460]It's very nice to be a part of that.
- [00:01:07.120]When you get to see a project as it's envisioned,
- [00:01:10.560]and then you get to see it implemented.
- [00:01:11.980]It's very rewarding.
- [00:01:14.690]McGee says the college
- [00:01:15.870]gave him the skills necessary
- [00:01:18.380]to understand how cities work,
- [00:01:20.680]and to influence development.
- [00:01:23.350]Well, this is an exciting project.
- [00:01:24.920]Our interior design students landed impressive internships
- [00:01:28.340]across the country this past summer.
- [00:01:30.777]Megan worked one-on-one with alum and arch rival
- [00:01:35.540]CEO Clint Runge in designing their Portland office.
- [00:01:39.410]Savannah worked on sourcing materials and editing
- [00:01:42.870]construction documents.
- [00:01:44.930]Maggie worked at Gensler in Denver,
- [00:01:47.210]while Morgan interned at their San Francisco office.
- [00:01:50.780]And Heidi was in Nashville working on office designs
- [00:01:53.970]for a new corporate headquarters.
- [00:01:56.600]I'm really proud of our students
- [00:01:57.870]for landing these internships
- [00:01:59.240]because they sort of stretch their comfort zone
- [00:02:01.750]and really go out and pursue experiences
- [00:02:05.560]that at might first seem intimidating,
- [00:02:07.810]but it boost their confidence 'cause they see that
- [00:02:10.200]the education that they're getting here
- [00:02:11.970]really is first class and competitive nationally.
- [00:02:16.120]So when they return,
- [00:02:17.130]they're ready to kind of take anything on.
- [00:02:20.110]The colleges community partners
- [00:02:21.870]come to us when they need inspiration.
- [00:02:24.650]While a small percentage of student work is actually built,
- [00:02:27.600]we are an incubator of ideas.
- [00:02:30.530]This semester, third year architecture students
- [00:02:33.360]worked with the Universities world renowned
- [00:02:35.820]International Quilt Study Center and Museum
- [00:02:38.630]to design a hypothetical expansion.
- [00:02:41.630]My students have worked with museum staff
- [00:02:43.620]and leadership in order to try to answer the question
- [00:02:46.820]of what a museum of the 21st century should be.
- [00:02:49.570]It has been an absolute delight
- [00:02:51.870]to have that cross-campus collaboration
- [00:02:56.250]and to be able to work with the students
- [00:02:59.190]in a new and innovative way.
- [00:03:01.740]And so it's kind of a good like foot in the door
- [00:03:04.030]to that kind of real life kind of work experience I think.
- [00:03:07.870]But it's really great to, you know, get the opportunity
- [00:03:10.330]to develop the community I've lived in my entire life.
- [00:03:14.070]Hi, welcome to Sheldon.
- [00:03:15.800]My name's Abby.
- [00:03:16.633]We're so fortunate to have the resources
- [00:03:18.500]of Sheldon Museum of Art
- [00:03:19.740]only a few steps from Architecture Hall.
- [00:03:22.530]Case in point,
- [00:03:23.429]second year landscape architecture students
- [00:03:26.510]analyzed a Richard Diebenkorn painting
- [00:03:29.290]as a springboard for their first studio project.
- [00:03:32.390]I think it's really amazing
- [00:03:34.120]that we have one at the Sheldon.
- [00:03:35.630]Seeing it in real life was like really interesting,
- [00:03:37.510]really cool.
- [00:03:38.550]We're learning how to read
- [00:03:39.383]compositional elements and principals
- [00:03:42.310]as a way of looking at art, thinking about art,
- [00:03:45.150]and then taking that as a language
- [00:03:47.640]for our own three-dimensional spacial design.
- [00:03:50.280]In the yellow, you can see it.
- [00:03:51.113]Yeah.
- [00:03:52.500]Our study abroad programs continue to be popular.
- [00:03:55.717](pounding fists)
- [00:03:57.320]This summer, Brian Kelly added a model making workshop
- [00:04:00.460]as part of the Barcelona, Spain trip.
- [00:04:02.960]I can't wait to see how students incorporate
- [00:04:05.010]new tools and techniques in their upcoming designs.
- [00:04:08.850]Plus, next fall marks the 50th anniversary
- [00:04:12.760]of our London study abroad program.
- [00:04:15.360]We'll be arranging special events
- [00:04:17.090]to coincide with that celebration.
- [00:04:19.190]So stay tuned for further updates.
- [00:04:22.450]Now, some new faces to introduce.
- [00:04:26.250]Sarah Deyong is associate Professor and Director
- [00:04:29.590]of the Architecture Program.
- [00:04:31.320]She comes to us from Texas A and M University.
- [00:04:34.640]Zachary Porter, Bud Shenefelt, and Craig Babe,
- [00:04:38.040]also joined the architecture faculty.
- [00:04:40.570]I'm excited about the energy and enthusiasm
- [00:04:43.670]they bring to the college.
- [00:04:46.100]As the semester draws to a close,
- [00:04:48.360]I look forward to the challenges and opportunities
- [00:04:50.950]the new year will bring.
- [00:04:52.590]I wish you and yours joy, peace, and prosperity.
